What is Natural? Not Aging!

  • Technology can change cultural norms. The way we think about the aging process is no exception. BioViva's CEO Liz Parrish takes us on a quick tour through human history to show what used to be considered "normal" and what will be considered "normal" in the world of tomorrow.

It's all about social constructs. We shouldn't focus on whether it's "natural" or "normal", we should rather focus on what's good for the humanity, and disease aint one!

You're right. The research isn't going as quickly as the science allows because it's ridiculously underfunded, and while more money is finally going into geroscience, it still isn't happening as fast as it otherwise would if researchers had more resources. So many people disgustingly try to justify their discrimination against the elderly by making up tales about dystopic events that will "definitely" occur if rejuvenation biotechnologies are created, then those concerns get debunked by people who bother to do the math and research, and those good answers to those repetitive questions get ignored on the basis of the evidence having the audacity to actually be largely positive.

Great video as usual! Many things that bring humans value are not natural. I just want to increase my healthspan and lifespan as much as scientifically possible that I can responsibly afford.

The appeal to nature fallacy not only crumbles the moment anyone mentions it on the Internet (which is an "evil" invention, right?), but it falls apart under any amount of scrutiny; look at the astronomical amount of terrible things that are natural which are wisely almost universally considered to be bad... Advanced technologies come with risks, but those problems can be minimized until further improvements eliminate them entirely. Regarding rejuvenation biotechnology in particular, the same ethical dilemmas that are brought up with strong A.I. don't apply, because rejuvenation therapies will just be medicine for the elderly that happens to increase longevity as a side benefit of good health.

    It's called the naturalistic fallacy.
"When the conclusion expresses what ought to be, based only on what is, or what ought not to be, based on what is not"

There's great work going on with senolytics by Oisin, Unity, the Mayo Clinic, ect. and if you're interested in learning about how close different rejuvenation therapies are to going into clinical trials, then I recommend reading the Life Extension Advocacy Foundation's Rejuvenation Roadmap.

@@isabellagoogleaccount8418 Oisin, Unity, and Ichor are a few examples of rejuvenation biotechnology research organizations that were started this decade, and what they and others like Repair Biotechnologies and the SENS Research Foundation do is early-stage medical research, so of course they don't sell products; rebust rejuvenation therapies don't exist yet, so it's important to support the underfunded research in order to speed up the medical control of age-related illnesses like Alzheimer's.

As long as you have a life and body (the brain is also the body with chemical processes) in balance you want to live. Someone that don´t wanna live in 99,9999999999999999% of the cases really needs a check up of his/her body or social circumstances.

To alleviate some religion based fears about this. God does not seem to be a stickler for how long souls live for in this plane of reality. Consider that some people die at 1 yrs old while others get live for 100+ yrs. The devil (a supposedly >ancient< pure evil spirit being) is also supposed to be extremely "old" and yet god still allows it to live as opposed to mankind (those of whom meanders back and fourth between good and evil) who get's to live for a meager few decades? If however "God" had divinely planned out how long each soul lives for then such plan has to also account for when people get saved from physical death in hospitals or when they take personal anti viral/bacterial (the harmful types of viruses/bacteria to humans) measures cracking open a medicine cabinet.
If the body was created by god to age and to die then we should do nothing (ie demolish all hospitals and break into people's homes and tear out their faucet/toilet and shower) whatsoever in order to try to cure biological ageing. If magic works (ie due to someone's great faith etc) to heal then that is fine however when such magic is absent or cannot do it's thing (ie instantaneously regrowing/attaching limbs of amputees) then it's time for science/technology to do it's thing.
Another counter argument to life extension is that invasive technologies will somehow corrupt the soul (ie corrupt the sacredness and innocence perhaps) and yet theist forget that "God" (gods/deities/angels/spirit beings etc) do not have an inner or outer selves and yet able to exist as some sort of self contained thought-self(?). If it is a good thing to try to be like god then extending (healthy) life spans can be no less then half the whole of a person (or a soul if one is religious).
