    Great job getting all this up and running. My dad was tech savvy so my first computer game was reader rabbit in the apple II. Then Oregon trail. He switched to pc and I remember going through 3.1, 3.11, and all we really got to play was paint, then with 95 we got Command and Conquer, and Warcaft 2 and it changed my world.

    Ah how i dont miss having to change IRQ values to get Sound and GPUs working

    • @Mtaalas
      @Mtaalas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Frankly, IRQ:s have gone nowhere in PCIe, most just never worry about them these days. If you do very VERY time critical IO operations, you want to break out the manual of your motherboard and figure out the IRQ priorities of your PCIe slots so you can make sure the expansion card for the critical IO has straight connection to the CPU and has the highest priority,possibly even surpassing your GPU so that you can be sure nothing gets in the way of that device when it wants to transfer data.
      this is mostly applicable in real time applications though (like real time audio processing)

    Nostalgia at its finest 🥰🤩👍 growing up using an Amiga 500 w/ 512kb upgrade… then I moved onto 486DX2-80mhz with Dos 3.1, then 3.11, then Windows 95, 98, 98SE, a second Windows pc with NT 4.0, then 5.0. Back to my main pc … then Windows XP, XP64, Vista (🤦‍♂🤦‍♀🤦) Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition, Windows 10 x64 Pro …..ahhhhh the experiences, memories & frustrations! Definitely a time of learning unlike these days where most issues are automatically resolved at a bios or OS level. Even overclocking is a dying art in many ways and now is nothing like it used to be 👍🏆😉

    I will always wonder if building with authentic hardware or 100% diy like the "WeeCee" by TheRasteri or by building a couple diy parts to avoid configuration problems is the best way to make retro systems.
    BTW, great job. You have a lot of knowledge on how to figure out all the parts you needed to adjust for your retro PC project.
    I regret trashing one PC without troubleshooting it (wouldn't turn on). If I do have the opportunity at another retro computer, I'm not sure if I could keep it or be capable of the maintenance of getting it back into working order.

    lol, I have this exact case for my kids' computer. in it I have an asrock H470m ITX with a core i7 ~10700. it serves as their computer and plays NES, Super NES, and N64 games. i thought that it would be cool to connect it not only to their two monitors but to connect it to the TV to play games.... awesome idea. the size of i allows me to put it into their bookshelf. if you look at the amazon link for the case provided by craft computing in the description above, you can see pics of their computer when i was testing it at my computer station area and in the bookshelf. love the size and the look of the case. highly recommend it.

    No way! I remember having the same exact issue with PS/2 keyboard with one of my first computers! My uncle suggested that I should try to turn the PC on without any peripherals and that's when I noticed that the computer would boot normally without the damn keyboard lol. Now this was about 20 years ago so can't remember the details (I was like 10?) but I THINK that at some point I fixed it with PS/2 to USB adapter.

  • @BladeRunner21577
    @BladeRunner21577 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually Jeff SATA 150 was around in the later days of Windows 98.
    It survived a little longer than most people think. It was cheaper than XP so people bought it. It was also known to be more compatible with games so it had that over XP too.
    Second correction is about XP and PCIe graphics cards.
    The first card I remember for PCIe was the X850XT which was quite early in the XP life, but all the other cards were AGP which means you were looking at 1-2 years to change over from all AGP and then another 1-2 years to take up PCIe and then another year for PCIe to take over AGP as the dominant card for XP which means XP was into 2007 before PCIe graphics was defacto.

    What really held you back was the ITX form factor. ATX or even MATX parts would have been infinitely easier to source and use. BTW, the power on glitch with the IBM keyboard is a known problem with non-IBM desktop PC's. IIRC, it's a IRQ conflict problem that non-IBM board can't resolve at boot-time. That wasn't your fault as it wasn't common knowledge. If you had chosen a Dell or Gateway PS2 keyboard for example, it would have been smooth sailing..

    For sound you might want to look into stuff like the OPL3LPT, PhilsComputerLab has shown this on his channel and it seems to be quiet a nice piece of hardware.
    Sadly it uses the parallelport which you don't have directly on board, but maybe there is something out there which uses the serial port!

    Maybe I should do something similar. I do happen to have an old flex atx PSU laying around.

    That IBM keyboard is genuinely one of the best membrane keyboards you can get. They more commonly come in "dark mode" colors and are available in both USB and PS/2, and both IBM and Lenovo branding (both are good). I have 3 lol. I really want one of the "light" ones.
    The GeForce 6200, for similar reasons, is a great GPU for set-and-forget Win98 machines. New enough that it can breeze through most games, not too new that it lacks drivers, and they come in PCI, AGP, and PCIe. Not the most authentic to the period, but it's close enough to not really matter for most games.
    Small note for the 6200, though: for mine on Win98SE I had some problems with the latest drivers. I think I used the oldest ones I could find for it on Nvidia's website and that solved everything (I tried almost every version fwiw). If anyone needs more details on the exact version (or needs it on the internet archive) let me know and I'll double check what the machine is running!

    The smallest socket 370 motherboards that I remember were ASUS Flex ATX, then ITX standar came into play with VIA processors. Then socket 478 became popular and it's when I started seeing ITX intel based motherboards. Not even DTX socekt 370 motherboards were available, because that form factor came after ITX. Anyways, form factors always confuses me, check this out maybe fit into your project: Xcel 2000 motharboard.

    Great project as always, really nice hardware evaluation which will help people a lot on their journey to retro gaming.
    The only thing I have to mention is: This is supposed to be a somewhere in the neighbourhood of late 90s early 2000s gaming PC. How dare you not using a Razer Boomslang with it?! =D

    Welp, there goes my tech support PTSD, and well into the mid 2000's.
    I remember when people where breaking their mouses on purpose to get first a mouse "with a wheel", then it was optical.
    Also IRQ issues, damn that took me back to family computer era.
    Even now and then I got a family member or friend that wants to recover data from an old PC and even if I have an asortment of USB adapters, nothing beat an old motherboard and lightweight linux.

    A ps2 to USB adapter might fix that keyboard issue. I used to use one for my model m on my ryzen build
