I would like everyone who has a complaint about the master drummer Louis Hayes here on this video to realize that you are in strong disagreement greats Cannonball Adderly John Coltrane Dexter Gordon & Grant Green just to name few. But if you’re into that deep swinging swagger that only a Korg Metronome can provide more power to you, eat your heart out.
I've heard him play many times and think he's amazing but on this recording he just sounds off. It's not a critique against Louis Hayes as a musician, i's just my subjective opinion on this particular take. Just because he's a master you don't have to blindly accept everything he does
He overplayed and did not keep the band together. He overpowered the band n made too many overcomplicated polyrhythmic fills that just detracted from the melody n some solos. He's probably a great drummer but this performance didn't give much intuition of his play style.
Please post videos of yourself at 77 in years young in a boomy room playing with all of these musicians for the first time. I hope your critics are a bit more clued in when and if that time comes. Meanwhile none of these complaints entered my mind as someone who a actually is featured in this video. Call me blind but I never expect perfection from any humans, or even expect them to always meet standards set by folks who weren’t even a twinkle in their mother’s eye when this master was shaping jazz drumming for generations. Having expectations shapes opinions, which is why I feel the best thing for most situations is to have as few as possible to allow for the best outcome as possible. You all have the right to criticize but I hope you understand how disrespectful and arrogant you look to some of us who are in the arena, but long live the first amendment and opinions which are as plentiful as poop shoots.
So I thought that the sax player was kinda bad. Then, months later, I listened to him and a band of his in a club: the most mindfuck experience ever. So I learnt not to judge by a TH-cam video- maybe it’d be better not to judge at all
my only wish is that the guitar an base could be audible ratherr than vissible...trombone s good butm whos the lead singer for this lovely song or is it a medli----LOL KImmo
Julian and Larry made recently made an album with Dayna, also including Eric Harland and Brad Mehldau. I think Louis Hayes played with Horace Silver and such back in the day, so it's far from a student recital
You just revealed your lack of understanding of how drums function in a jazz rhythm section. Louis Hayes is a master drummer who played with Cannonball!
sorry, i didn't know i was listening to a wikipedia article. if you're listening to a song you're entitled to an opinion, now matter the credibility of the artist
You sound wonderful. I type like crap
Julian, you should wonderful
He does
Indeed
this video has contributed to bass pedagogy, countless players have learned LG's solo here
Wonderful guitar solo! ❤
Loving the guitarist's solo! Really builds well
Julian is just so good
Don't lie, you all thought the first 30 seconds sounded like the first month of junior high band class. It did recover though
You're right
Lol. True enough. Boomy rooms and lots of separation will do that. It did recover though!
Superbly done!
guitar guy is out there man...........Loveit
Ohhhh marry me Larry Grenadier!
julian is from different planet.....love and respct bro
Great Guitar Solo!!
that bass solo was the bomb.... huehuehuehueh
Julian is a wizard. plus... Jimmy Bruno approves!!!
Définition exacte de ce qu'est un solo. Jouer autour du thème!! Lage est vraiment un musicien!!
the room's acoustics are a bit problematic but this is still 100% shred. kudos dudos
This is so good I liked it then I disliked it so that I can like it again!!
Amazing lineup!
Larry is amazing!!!

if he played wth dexter thats toatly fine. but on this recording he‘s overplaying.

thanks for mentioning that it was in the afternoon!
Flawless!
Why would anyone post such an excruciatingly bad video of such great musicians?
2:41 and I badly wish that horn to please make way...3:00...thank you.
really great !!!

Super Julian and all the band
Does anyone have a recording of this with slightly better audio?
Dayna is killing!
Larry and Julian should make music together
Damn, a baritone sax.
Mr.Lage is an extraterrestrial
Very tasteful!
Damn Larry is amazing.
Did the drummer think he was up for a 7 minute solo
So I thought that the sax player was kinda bad. Then, months later, I listened to him and a band of his in a club: the most mindfuck experience ever. So I learnt not to judge by a TH-cam video- maybe it’d be better not to judge at all
DS is great. He plays a killer EWI too.....
He is a great player. He is just not a bari player.
we were together in berklee he played his a...s..s.. and he was 19...
Nah its still shit. Overpowered the entire band and wayyy too loud. No dynamics
@@chrisscanlon3717 Didn't I see you at the Grammys? 'With a mop and bucket?
julian for the win
The hater comments on this video remind me how ignorant most internet users are.
Is Grenadier playing acoustically?
genio
Really nice performance of a song I hate. That bassist, wow.
A lot of swing and feel.....nice understanding of how to make things move, and how to use the spaces inbetween the notes.
😎✨
Yo! Drum dude... CHILL bruh!!
Who is here because of Julian’s recent lesson?
4:45 Larry grenadier
my only wish is that the guitar an base could be audible ratherr than vissible...trombone s good butm whos the lead singer for this lovely song or is it a medli----LOL KImmo
Julian @ 2:57

eargasms.......
I miss the "Archtop phase" Julian sometimes...
Is this a student recital that Julian and Larry joined in?
Julian and Larry made recently made an album with Dayna, also including Eric Harland and Brad Mehldau. I think Louis Hayes played with Horace Silver and such back in the day, so it's far from a student recital
+Mike Hawk
He's on Horace Silver's ''Blowin the Blues Away''
+Mike Hawk Hayes also plays on Joe Henderson's Tetragon album if I'm not mistaken!
I really wish that drummer would play a straight beat, he was way too flashy for a piece that just needed some simple accompaniment
+AvenjaysGuitar DITTO !! And right at the top !!
Hahaha was going to say that, you can clearly see Julian a little bit uncomfortable by the drummer's playing at 2:03 - 2:10
AvenjaysGuitar "that drummer" is Louis Hayes. Dig into the history of the music a bit. Julian Lage isn't the starting point.
Don't lie, you all thought the first 30 seconds sounded like the first month of junior high band class.
You just revealed your lack of understanding of how drums function in a jazz rhythm section. Louis Hayes is a master drummer who played with Cannonball!
Lage is God
this is kinda sad
Why????
julian CAN'T ROCK!
That fucking drummer. NO
yeah the drums were a bit much ....pace yourself man....all in all still enjoyable...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Hayes
uh... do you know who louis hayes is?
You got that one wrong!
sorry, i didn't know i was listening to a wikipedia article. if you're listening to a song you're entitled to an opinion, now matter the credibility of the artist
Damn y'all are very judgmental. If you don't like their sound, it doesn't mean they're bad musicians. Smh y'all should've learned better than that
guitarist comping is boring as hell. nice bari solo. guitar solo is nice and creative. thats all for now.
could be ok music , just crap audio - shame. I preferred it when the drummer settled into a groove and well, behaved.
Annoying saxophone
Julian Lange Must not Play with this Bad musician
worst percussion in a long time - wft is he doing
Thsts why I hate Brass wayy too loud. Overpowering everyone else and doing a shit solo
Baritone sax solo is the most interesting in this track. it's true the gitar and the drums are normal, boring. The double bass is ok
