Not only that, but their "racism is bad" angle goes out of the window with this poor allegory because the fire elements are indeed a danger to the other elements, therefore their fear for the fire girl is based on reality, because she can literally kill everything by just being there.

They’re air not clouds.
The racism allegory still works in this movie. As we see in the end the different elements can’t actually hurt eachother atleast not on a serious level so at that point all the fear and prejudice and racism or whatever all comes from nothing except the fire people speaking a different language and doing things differently. But even then I feel like racism isn’t even a big part of the movie. At the end the movie focuses more on romance and I guess emotions. 1) make the fire people live in the glass ghetto, apparently beautiful but fragile in its core.

We need a balance in the animation industry. 2D and Stop-Motion movies should be made more often and that’s coming from someone that adores 3D animation.
That’s why i love Spider-Verse, Puss in Boots 2, Arcane, Klaus and The Bad Guys. They use the best of both worlds (2D and 3D) and proves why 2D should come back alongside with 3D.
But at the same time, bringing back 2D won’t matter if the story is not good, because my biggest fear is that the big next 2D movie flops because of bad storytelling.

Secondly, Wade never relies on Ember and really he takes control of the relationship multiple times pushing her to do what she wants and follow her dreams and even calls her out and calls her afraid when she turns on him.
And like you say Ember isn’t portrayed as “perfect” at all neither is she portrayed as someone who doesn’t need a man. Actually it would be the opposite since in the beginning she has anger issues and explodes with anger but after her date with Wade there’s literally a scene of her getting angry again before thinking about him and calming down. There are many reasons why I don't like this movie:
    - First of all, the racism allegory doesn't work. Usually when people say ''You don't mix.'' they mean that because of your different personalities, cultures, political views, religions, etc., you won't make a good couple because you'll argue all the time. It would've been much more interesting if they tackled those topics. Maybe they would come to the conclusion they are good people but too different to make it work.
    - The whole world-building doesn't work. Remember how in Zootopia the city was built to accommodate all animals and their needs? Well, in Element City there's a water rail tracks that spill water just over Fire Town. Why? The explanation is supposed to be that because Water people were first and Fire people were last the city isn't for the latter. But most Elements aren't shown being mean to each other on purpose. Why would the city build it like that? Why would the Fire people move to a place that is so dangerous for them? If Water people founded Element City it means they created it with the idea in mind to bring other elements together, so why would they be so careless with the city design? They even lampshade the problem with Wade asking ''Why do they even have these?'' in regards to fences that are unable to stop 3 out of 4 Elemental races.
    - The whole elements can not mix mantra doesn't work because all other elements mix just fine. The fire is the odd one out. Also, Ember says ''Elements don't mix.'' to a CHILD who is asking her out. Really? Don't you think that the fact that he's a kid and you're an adult is more important?
    - The whole subplot with finding the leak is so stupid and contrived. Let the one guy and an unauthorized random person just look for it. And, when they eventually find it the idea that it wasn't noticed before is pure nonsense.
    - The whole movie tries way too hard to make you cry. Especially the crying game and Wade's death fake-out.
    - ''We changed each other chemistry.'' Except throughout the whole movie before and after Ember is constantly touching things that should catch fire but don't. Unless he means they can only touch each other through the power of love which is the laziest and cheesiest explanation ever but really? They're the first fire and water couple ever, or at least the ones who figured out they could touch each other with no problem.
    - Also, I hate Wade. Can movies stop showing that being in tune with your emotions means that you're an emotional wreck who makes emotional decisions without thinking about consequences and showing them as a good thing? So many of the movie's conflicts would've been over if Wade would just shut the fuck up and thought before making a scene that makes Ember angry.

Tbh Ember is not portrayed as perfect at all. She's completely detached from her own feelings and wishes and doesn't even consider herself important enough to have her own dreams. She puts her father and his shop before anything else and therefore neglecting herself. Her anger issues are not portrayed as a good thing either. Her anger issues originated from her bottled up repressed feelings regarding her future. So no, she is definitely NOT portrayed as perfect. Wade is way too sentimental to the point where is pretty annoying, but he isn't weak either. He's the only one who confronts Ember and her temper and challenges Ember's status quo. Yeah, he's portrayed as overly sentimental, but it seems like all water people are like that. Saying that Wade is "weak" and "pathetic" because he cries a lot is part of the reason why animation studios are portraying male characters as more sensitive to begin with, because that's a really toxic stereotype: men can be sensible and that doesnt mean they are weak or pathetic. I don't have a problem with the love story, to me, the main issue is that the movie doesn't provide a single good reason for the elements to not be segregated. Fire people are constantly on the edge of dying or setting everything on fire, evaporating water people or burning earth people. The analogy doesnt work at all. That's honestly my main complain, also, the world building was kinda disappointing. And the plot itself was pretty weak. In other words, it was a cute love story, but the racism analogy didn't work at all and the story felt too simple at times. Wouldn't say it was a disaster, it's way better than Lightyear and Strangeworld. A 7/10 for me, the animation was absolutely gorgeous, and it was the first Pixar movie about an adult romance, which I think it's pretty cool. People are way too harsh on this movie, lol.

Of course the bunny should be afraid of a fox, she's a bunny and he's a fox! Foxes eat rabbits. You can't muddle your metaphors and allegories like that and not expect your message to suffer.

  • @zebare726

My suggestion for the story would have been that Ember's parents were invited with open arms by naive tree people(Hippie) into their house, since they wanted to be open to all new elements, even ones they didn't know about.
Of which the parents happened to start a big fire, which led to the Water people having to put out the fire.
with the result that the Tree people became skeptical of the fire people as more and more Fire arose due of the same thing happend over and over.
Ending with the creation of the Water Firefighters and the fire people getting there own area to live after a protracted conflict between water, fire and Earth/Tree.
Then just sprinkle in the story of doesnt wanna follow in your parents Fotsteps...
Which leads us to Wade encountering Ember during a fire, which happened to start due to an accident caused by Ember, Because Ember wanted to create Art to get out frustration after similar debate with her parents about" Follow in your parents' Footsteps"

To give the other elements a clear reason why they don't want anything to do with the fire people as they have a history around them. But also give the fire people a proper reason why they dont wanna be around the other elements...Aka they tried diversity with zero knowledge about each other Differences.
Which would have been better than the story we got..Aka everyone is racist (Especially against the fire people) in a society that advocates diversity.
