      Brett Hickmann I left the theater very "meh." I didn't hate it, some parts I liked. I have to watch a movie like this several times, but I could've done without the whole "Poe is just a hothead and if we would've told him the plan we could've cut out half the movie and focused on the interesting parts." There was zero reason why everyone wasn't just told the plan from the beginning. Should've been more Rey training instead of she's just a super badass after Luke gave her like 1.5 lessons.

      It seems to me like there are a lot of fans that do not understand how she was able to get back aboard the ship. Force Pushing herself towards the door is a valid option, also Force Pulling the ship was another option. In Rebels season 2 the Seventh Sister was able to use Force Pull to hold the Phantom1 in place by herself while it was maintaining full thrusters, and only lost the tug of war because she got greedy and tried to close the bay doors at the same time. Considering this was a moment of desperation to live her not knowing what she was doing enough to pull or push herself to the hatch is not as insane as most of you fans think it is.

      Eh, she beat Luke who hasn't been trying to use the force or been in any combat for like 5-10 years. How long ago did Ben turn? assuming he found Auktu, he probably already cut himself off from the force, and was just there to live out the last of his days.

      Maybe the war wouldn't have happened in the first place if he hadn't gone off in a sulk, leaving Snoke and Kylo Ren to blow up 5 planets with billions on them. Let alone his best friend died, and the Empire Mark 2 (how the hell did they get so big anyway?!) manage to wipe out the Resistance except for about 20 people?! Yeah, great job, thanks Luke. Don't let the door hit you on the way put. You didn't even try to fight and take down Kylo Ren. Fabulous. Good job.

      @WhiskeyTango76s 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Somehow I'm not surprised, for some reason they have to either destroy or completely render the Enterprise powerless in every single movie they make while, if I remember right, it never happens in the shows and if it has then it's rare. I guess it's safe to assume that's how Picard dies in the movie, he probably stayed behind and evacuated his crew when separating the Saucer section and led a lone kamikaze attack in an attempt to save his crew or to buy them enough time to make it back to Federation space. What a brave, selfless man but from what I've heard is that they portrayed Picard as a coward so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't separate the two sections and just decided, for absolutely no reason, to sacrifice his entire crew along with himself.

    I think even Lucas called lightsabers "laserswords" once.. an even Anakin says it in TPM. But I like to think that Luke said lasersword because he distanced himself from the Jedi way and that lightsaber is manly a more mystical word for their weapon. It's like saying Soul Calibur is an old sword.

    • @rosvel92
      @rosvel92 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It makes sense because all of Return of the Jedi and the OT trilogy as a whole, ended with Luke Skywalker throwing a sword; just like The Last Jedi started (that's how he redeems the sins of the father). So yeah, Luke hates the weapon, even if he kept it, it is totally implied it was a lifelong inner conflict where Luke kept throwing it away and picking it up, back and forth. Until he threw it for good.
      And yeah, JJ Abrams' Rise of Skywalker, the single most stupid character betraying moment is where Luke picks up the saber, that moments he picks the sins of tge father all over again, Rey is damned to repeat them. Abrams doesn't undetstand Star Wars, nor Luke.

    • @JWonn
      @JWonn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Right. Star Wars has this wonderful roster of characters that people already care about and are already invested in, and this movie had the opportunity to delve into these characters develop them a bit more, and it just didn't. For example, Instead of having Admiral "It's a Trap" Ackbar who we know from the original trilogy and played a significant role in the Rebellion take over in Leia's absence (which would have made narrative as well as fan service sense), they brought in a new unheard of character, the pink haired vice admiral. Likewise, Lando Calrissian should still be alive and kickin', but he's nowhere to be seen. The new trilogy so far feels more like a soft reboot than a continuation of the story.

    • @BJ-bd5fc
      @BJ-bd5fc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you notice that Ackbar was sucked out into space and killed (when Leia used the force to "fly" back)? All the top leadership died at that moment and left the Resistance in a real hole.

      I could have sworn there was an off Han (get it?) comment in the original trilogy mentioning laser swords.
      I'm pretty sure they were referred to as laser swords during production of the originals, they probably only said lightsaber maybe three times in the three movies. Lightsaber really took off through the post-movie marketing than in the films. I wonder what they said in the scripts.

    • @AspieMediaBobby
      @AspieMediaBobby 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sangtrone Pretty much Sith and Jedi use the terms "lightsaber" and sometimes "swords"(Which is confusing because in the Expanded Universe and this film we see people both Force-sensitive and non-Force sensitive using traditional medieval swords as well and after all what is "Star Wars" if not medieval times in space?) ,people in the Galaxy who have yet to have Jedi training say "laser swords".It`s pretty straightforward.

    • @jonesta29
      @jonesta29 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, that is where a certain section of hate is coming from. It is the only part people who were totally ok with Disney turning SW into a children's film made to sell cute animal toys at every turn want to focus on.
      This movie has so many issues; bombs falling in space, popsicle Leia, two terrible characters on a pointless journey to find another terrible character, bad dialogue turning a once promising character in Poe into a complete moron who has to over explain thing to terrible character number 1, ridiculous amounts of misplaced humor that breaks from any sort of actual immersion into the plight of the resistance forces, unimaginative "lets just make things bigger" bad guys and weapons, and to top it all off did I mention the shameless money grab over children's toy style animals all over the place?
      I thought that the general plot and outcome of the movie was a perfectly acceptable place for the story to move. Luke never was some super Jedi, he was always flawed. Rey is still an awesome character and I thought Kylo Ren became a better character instead of the whiny Vader wannabe that he was in TFA. However, with all of the other issues here it was very hard to focus on the actual good parts of the film because they were overshadowed by all of the crap that was put in.
      It is a bad movie and that is unfortunate because it had moments where you could see that the bones of a decent/good movie were there.

  • @udbhavseth799
    @udbhavseth799 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I kinda loved how he called it the 'laser sword'. That basically meant to imply how the whole galaxy saw the Jedi as these all-powerful beings, almost as myths and legends, so they would not know the true nature of the weapon these warriors carried. The majority of the galaxy probably never came up close to a Jedi so only saw those swords from a distance, and were ignorant about it- they merely saw that they carried 'swords of laser' that sliced through anything. They would not know the hyper-specific and accurate term of 'lightsaber'.
    Luke was mocking how the galaxy deified the Jedi and how he hated their perception of him.

    There IS a good reason why Luke didn't go to Crait in a physical form.
    If you remember, Luke says, "Nobody is ever really gone". While most people will (agreeably) see this as a reference to Han, or even himself as he will surely not survive what he knows he has to do. He is talking about Kylo Ren. He knows has to right the wrong he feels he caused and help turn Kylo back to the light. And the best way he can achieve that goal is to show him the power of the light side of the force. And to do so effectively without actually killing Kylo. Because that is what started (for better or for worse) the whole Kylo/Luke dichotomy. Luke knows that Rey is right about Kylo not being a lost cause.

    For me, it's like Luke Skywalker's original story was for absolutely nothing. He wanted to be a hero, to fight the empire and make the galaxy a better place. He failed. Completely. The empire? Still around by a new name. An evil Jedi/Darth Vader to enforce their will? Yep. Coruscant is destroyed, along with a few other planets, thanks to their super weapon. None of the "mystery boxes" Abrams loves panned out, as usual (LOST).
    Han Solo is dead. He and Leia didn't last. Luke failed completely. Leia is now gone. All to set up Mary Sue (i.e. Rey, who is perfect at everything).
    Rey is now both Luke Skywalker AND Han Solo. She's an awesome pilot of the Falcon with a Wookie sidekick AND the newest, bestest Jedi EVER. Is it ever explained how she somehow understands Wookie speak? No. Mary Sue.
    Luke learning the force, becoming a Jedi, was all for naught. The rebellion is now at it's nadir. The New Order has all but destroyed a handful of them. But that's ok. That was intended so that Rey can build them up again. Luke's story and reason for the entire trilogy was wasted so they can start all over again with Mary Sue. She will essentially have to train herself, because she only appeared to have a few days training under Luke. But that's ok, because there appears to be literally NOTHING this girl can't do better than anyone else. She has less training than Luke and she's standing toe to toe with Kylo and nearly winning.
    If only she could sing really well, she'd be textbook Mary Sue.
    Edited to add: Finn's story was WORTHLESS. Waste of time.

    • @sinistar99
      @sinistar99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Basically your whole argument is "The battle between good and evil was pointless because 40 years later the evil came back and the fight continues." It makes no sense. Luke didnt fail at all he won HIS battles during HIS TIME. His time is over and some of the whiny petulant fans cant deal with it. If Rey was a guy NO ONE would be calling him a "gary stu." And FINNs story is awesome. I could have done without all the scenes with the space horses, but other than that the movie was fantastic.

    • @niamhmorrissey2187
      @niamhmorrissey2187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      "His time is over"
      You don't have to ruin a character just to make a new one look good. Why have Luke in this movie if he's gonna act the opposite way we knew him as, barely do any training for Rey, and just cower in fear and shame. All while Rey is gradually getting stronger and more powerful.
      Rey literally stands over Luke who is fallen to the ground with mud and rain all over him, and has a Lightsaber held at him.
      It's fan service that fails at fan servicing.
      And no, people aren't hating Rey because she's woman. If the SW fans were a bunch of woman-haters, then why is Ahsoka Tano considered one of the best SW characters outside of movies? Because she's a well written character, Rey isn't.
      Shes unnecessarily overpowered (wipes the floor with the main bad guy in the FIRST FUCKING MOVIE)
      Her entire adventure relies on convenience.
      She contradicts herself alot. (Giving Finn a hard time for not being willing to help, then a few minutes later runs away saying "I want no part in this!"
      She gets more and more powerful with the force despite barely any training.
      She has beaten literally EVERYONE that's tried to fight her.

    • @sinistar99
      @sinistar99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justa Person Reys story isnt the boiler plate "heroes journey" she paid her dues on Jakku where she had to fight know how to build things etc. We never saw Indiana Jones take boxing lessons in a training montage with "eye of der tiger" and slowly learn how to beat up Nazis either but nobody called him a Gary Stu.
      Lukes force projection battle at the end was awesome they didn't "ruin his character" at all they developed it just like Obi Wan and Yoda toward their ends.
      I'd love to see an adventure with younger Luke but this wasn't it and wasn't meant to be it. Hes older than Obi Wan was in episode IV --which if made today would have people whining they "ruined him cause he just stood there and lost a lame light sabre fight."

      Also, ships can't fly in space the same way airplanes do in the Earth's atmosphere. Also, you can't simply blow up the first Death Star without having some debris fall on Yavin 4 and possibly devastate the Rebel base. ALSO, you obviously can't be a great galactic empire when all that you command are bumbling idiots who's fame would grow from never being able to hit a single target. I just realized, Star Wars is freaking stupid . . . . . . .

  • @HaploidCell

    Alright, so I've had problems with this movie, particularly the changes to the underlying physics. Like, either you need fuel for hyperjumps or you don't. It never came up before - why? Can X-wings and smaller craft jump on their own or can't they? Do they really need a carrier ship? What has changed?
    Can the hyperdrive jump be used to obliterate an entire fleet of ships?
    Why has no-one done this ever before? Why is there no defense against it? How does it work, and how does the hyperdrive work?
    These questions were not even raised by previous Star Wars movies. "Lightsaber" Star Wars was fundamentally a science fantasy, right? This feels like "Lasersword" Star Wars - like the entire franchise is edging closer to those Star Trek movies because they have no idea where to take the existing universe. So they're moving it from science fantasy to science fiction.
    Ooooor they're going to raise all these questions and then simply not answer them. That would be infuriating as hell.
    Changes to the fundamental aspects of a universe require transition. They have an audience that has been "trained" in Star Wars lore and physics for 40 years - they can't simply make sudden changes?
    You have to at least have one scene as a setup, to show how or why it is suddenly possible.
    Or else you risk breaking with your audience - the rules they know suddenly don't apply any more - and you establish that you can do whatever the fuck you want to this universe. But in the latter case it will be very difficult to motivate people to go see the next movie.

They killed her off so nicely, and then fucking brought her back in the second most overused Hollywood trope, with the first being the heavily manipulated relationships attempted to be developed between Ren/Rey/Finn Rey/Finn/Rose in order to set up some sort of love conflict. They even tried this in Prince Caspian, between Peter, Caspian and Susan, despite the fact Peter and Susan were siblings there still had to be tension FFS!

    Snoke's near-final dialogue has an alternate interpretation: he wanted Kylo to strike him down. The conniving Supreme Leader was taunting Kylo.
    Kylo Ren: “I know what I have to do.”
    Snoke: “You think you can turn him. Pathetic Child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. I see his mind. I see his every intent. Yes. I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it and kills his true enemy.”
    To complete his training and fulfill his destiny, Kylo Ren had to kill his master (adoptive father figure/the past).
    Has Kylo Ren achieved a new level of strength and power? Was this a component of Snoke's master-plan? Luke is now one with the force. Is Snoke (Plageius?) also one with the force? Has Snoke achieved immortality? Is the game over? Is the quest for balance in the force one that must go on forever?
    There's more depth to this film than many Star Wars fans are accustomed to.
    Sincerely,
    a Trekkie

    • @seanmullan8527
      @seanmullan8527 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly. He may have jumped bodies into Kylo or Rey, but hasn't taken full control yet. Or perhaps there will (also?) be a final balancing in the force realm involving Luke, Snoke/Plageius?/The Prime Jedi?. If the next film is the end of a 9-film arc, there needs to be a conclusion to the over-arching story and themes. Something knocked the force out of balance and it must be restored. The force has been violently oscillating between dark and light. An equilibrium must be achieved. To bring things full circle, the resolution should reflect the mythology established in the prequel trilogy. It should also deal with the flaws of the Jedi Order and what drove their downfall...
      Original code:
      Emotion, yet peace.
      Ignorance, yet knowledge.
      Passion, yet serenity.
      Chaos, yet harmony.
      Death, yet the Force.
      Later version:
      There is no emotion, there is peace.
      There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
      There is no passion, there is serenity.
      There is no chaos, there is harmony.
      There is no death, there is the Force.

    btw, Kevin Smith, *in the unlikely event you read this ) the reason why Luke didn't appear on Krait wasn't only because Luke's X-Wing was submerged, he also partially disassembled it. The door of his hut was the wing to his X-Wing. If you watch back you can see there was faded and weathered paint on the door that matches the pattern of the markings on his X-Wing. He literally took his fighter apart because he was done fighting and went to Achto to die. He had no intention of ever leaving so he deserted himself there. Luke dying fucked me up, but I think Rian Johnson did a better job than people will admit to. Young farm boy luke stared off into binary suns conflicted, confused, and not really sure what he was doing with his life; Old Jedi Master Luke stared off into binary suns stared off into binary suns at peace after doing what he knew he had to do and had a renewed sense of purpose. The man who shut himself off to the force became part of it.

    One thing that really struck me about Last Jedi was after the Dreadnaught is destroyed and everyone's cheering Leia has an relief reaction followed by an immediate lamentation of the tremendous loss of life. Typically you don't see that in a victory. The humor also lent a human aspect to the film that is rarely present. Thor Ragnarok had something similar and I really liked it.
