It seems that 'Trigger' triumphs over 'Smackback'.
This is likely why that one time when your Nova attacked into the smackback hog which had like 4 frenzy, it smacked back Nova, broke her block, and then Nova's Trigger ability interrupted the remaining 3 smackbacks and fired her own attack anyways.
Edit: And this is exactly why at 35:50 Mimik was able to take down that spike wall before it got a chance to smackback Big Berry.

Now the smackbacks can happen.. but since the target is already defeated no smackback attacks are launched.
I think the clunkmasters are such a cool idea for a clan full of inventors, wonder what kinda burgers they would cook up if given the ingredients
