싱어송라이터 주영은 22세의 젊은 나이에 언더그라운드 신에서 강력한 팬덤을 구축했다. 그 어떤 홍보 활동 없이 성과를 이뤄냈다는 것이 주목할 만하다.
주영은 김진표의 '가지 말걸 그랬어'와 힙합 듀오 이루펀트(Eluphant)의 '물병자리', 여성 보컬 린의 신곡 '하이힐'에 피처링으로 참여해 이름을 알렸다. 미국 기타리스트 겸 가수 조지 벤슨(George Benson)의 노래 '나띵스 고나 체인지 마이 러브 포 유(Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You)'를 커버한 영상이 유튜브에서 조회수 10만을 돌파하기도 했다.
지난 2010년 12월 주영이 발표한 첫 디지털 싱글 '그대와 같아(Same As You)'은 대중에게 자신의 이름을 각인시키는 결정적인 계기가 됐다. 이어 지난 2012년 12월에는 프로듀서 라디(Ra.D)가 이끄는 레이블 리얼콜라보(RealCollabo)의 아티스트들과 손잡고 미니 앨범 '프롬 미 투 유(From Me To You)'를 발매했다.
젊 은 실력파 뮤지션 주영은 안주하지 않고 리얼콜라보를 떠나 새로운 곳에 둥지를 틀었다. 국내 신생 기획사 비라이크워터 레코즈(Belikewater Records)이다. 이렇게 음악 영역을 확장한 주영은 다음 달 출시를 목표로 신곡 '팝스타(Popstar)'를 준비 중이다.
'팝 스타'는 프로듀서 정재윤(Jae Chong)과 주영이 작사•작곡한 곡이다. 정재윤은 국내 R&B 그룹 솔리드 출신으로, 지난 2월 릴 웨인(Lil Wayne), 니키 미나즈(Nicki Minaj), 드레이크(Drake) 등이 소속된 미국의 유명 레이블 케시 머니 레코드(Cash Money Records)와 전격 계약하며 큰 화제를 불러 일으켰던 그룹 아지아틱스(Aziatix)를 키워낸 실력자이다. 특히 정재윤은 미국, 중국 등을 오가는 바쁜 일정중에도 주영이 가진 재능에 반해, '팝스타'를 훌륭한 곡으로 완성하기 위한 노력을 아끼지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.
'팝스타'는 레트로 풍의 R&B곡으로 한 남자가 매력적인 여성에게 빠진 마음을 그린 노래이다. 신나는 디스코 리듬, 일렉트릭 펑크 분위기, 강렬한 드럼 사운드가 가미됐다. 주영은 묵직한 흉성과 팔세토 창법을 자유자재로 구사한다. 'She's pop star chick/So she got that pop star ship' 같이 따라 하기 쉬운 가사는 노래 '팝스타'에 더욱 빠져들게 만든다.

This guy deserves more credit, the only time he was in the spotlight is when a kpop idol sent this link to their fans... And that is just sad. Jooyoung has been a favourite of mine since I heard his From Me to You album... If you haven't already you need to check out that masterpiece!! So much love and respect for him, can't wait for the day that he becomes more recognised.
