Metra SD70MACH Compilation: Chicago’s NEWEST Locomotive!

- As more and more of Metra's new SD70MACHs enter service, I've been getting out and shooting them as much as possible. In this video, you'll see most of the Metra's active SD70MACH fleet in service on the MDN, MDW, and NCS lines around Chicago. You'll also see a few scenes from inside Chicago Union Station. With their 710 prime movers and booming K5LLA horn, the SD70MACHs are certainly a step-up from Metra's usual 4-axle motive power. Sit back, relax, and enjoy 15 minutes of raw EMD power in Chicago's commuter fleet.

Love them!! EMD’s and K5LLA horns. They look fantastic. One can’t have more reasons to love a locomotive!!!!! if only they didn’t have so many quiet zones in Chicago area.
Holy! Those K5LLA's have quite a punch on these locomotives!
8:09 beautiful scene, can hear that horn so clearly too
Thanks! Hainesville is a great spot to watch them go by fast and with horn!
Nice, but if you're going to leave a pile of snow on the tracks you could have the decency to make it into a mortified snowman, a la Calvin n' Hobbes.
That first clip, I parked my car right there today and ate lunch in my car. I saw #503 go by. Great little crossing
Rondout is a great spot for trains!
Finally a good looking modern passenger locomotive
I enjoyed watching this video of some of METRA's SD70MACH locomotives in action, Sam! Thank you for taking the time to go out along the METRA Milwaukee District lines to capture them in action!
Thank you! I enjoyed filming them.
Wow nice catches! I’m a big fan of those Metra SD70s. That 7:15 shot was awesome 👏
ROSELLE! My hometown. I took many a pictures at that station 50 years ago. Before it was this new station. I also remember the Milwaukee Road 'City' trains going past the old old depot 'downtown' in the 60''s. 👍 Haven't been back in almost 30 years. It's changed...
These locomotives always look amazing!👍 Great compilation!👌
Very well done! You have really honed your video craft skills!
Thank you! I’ve been focusing on getting more cinematic with my videos. Glad you noticed!
I also caught 508 and the other Machs
Dude this sound like that sd70ace Horn off the BNSF sd70ace locomotive
Yuppp. They have K5LLAs. Just like SD70ACes.
great looking locomotives, reminds of the f40c
The best units on the Metra roster. Awesome video!
It’s between these and the classic F40s! Thank you
I absolutely love how overkill an SD70MACH is for pulling a ~10 car passenger service train
Beautiful
Thanks
Nice Catches
Thanks!
Nice to see the Libertyville station, the Metra train was a part of my childhood, we lived 1 block away from the trestle on 2nd street. My favorite trains were the orange Milwaukee Road freight trains.
Ive seen 505, 506, 507, 508 and 509 in person. All on the same district you filmed on!
Enjoyed watching this. Thanks Sam.
Thank you! Glad you liked it
damn, i miss snow, but i also miss trains. sometimes they would seem to go on for miles. i would left things on the tracks and i might come back to find them squished. i also found a peice of coal once which i still think is pretty cool. ah, if only i was old enough to properly enjoy them
Great comp. Georgous Locos. Get those new Alstom pax cars coupled with the SD Mac and METRA won't be able to tell any other commuter RR nothing . Hope the SD's aren't worn out by then . Have been watching these SD's evolve from when the purchase deal was made. The SS's are refurbed in the area I'm from, Waycross, GA (Patterson).
Good job Sam .
Thank you! I’d been following them ever since they left Progress Rail. I was excited when the first one was put on public display over the summer. They are neat locomotives! Refurbished very nicely!
Such a shiny new red and blue 💙💙 beautiful engine!!!
feels so weird actually seeing them in service now, and not just being towed.
Nice Airchime horn
They do have nice chimers!
Nice video!
Great video, and what superb locomotives !
I noticed this newer locomotive a couple weeks ago. I take the MDW. So cool
Great work!
Awesome video
Thanks!
Thanks Sam! 🐱
Thanks for watching!
Nice
What a beautiful locomotive Metra's new SD70MACH is! Thanks for posting your series of videos here - you really do capture the FEEL of Metra out in the world it serves.
I'm curious: What is the story behind the beautiful paint job on Metra bilevel coach 7801? The color scheme seems to match the one on our featured SD70MACH locomotive. To me, it's pretty obvious that that particular paint scheme won't (can't) be applied to the ribbed-sided stainless-steel fleet in front of and behind bilevel 7801, which is smooth-sided. Where did 7801 come from and when and by whom was it built? Is it a hand-me-down from Caltrain, which is in the process of replacing its fleet of diesel-powered bilevel commuter trains with their brand-new electric-powered Stadler trains?
I’d like to know how well the crews like the SD70MACHs
Im amazed that i haven't heard any story about these units derailing yet
Great footage, nicely done. Dunno if it was you who made a snowman in the gauge at 7:20, but as a former RR worker, I would caution against doing that. The crew does not know what is possibly underneath that pile of snow. Anyway, good stuff, thanks...
We thought it would make for a cool effect and didn’t think of it that way. Lesson learned. Glad you enjoyed the video nonetheless!

What's the reason to use SD70MAC on passenger trains, especially commuter one???
Cheaper than to buy new…
But isn't new this one already?
@@vladimirjereghi4080 this was a freight locomotive converted into a passenger unit.
Alaska Railroad use also SD70MAC on thier passenger trains
@@TheRealRajo6466 except theirs were built with the feature installed and are able to switch between freight and passenger duties.
Imagine if Amtrak had these for the Auto Train.
I think the SD70MACHs were formerly freight locomotives.
what else would they have been.. these units were built specifically for freight use. theyre ex KCS units heavily modified and rebuilt for passenger service
@@thedwaynerailfans thanks for responding👍
you should railfan deval diamond in des plaines
Seems impracticable to use a six axle freight locomotive for commuter trains. Caught one of these being delivered through Nappanee, IN earlier this year. They look nice, but to me, impracticable.
They’ve used 6 axles previously on their trains (F40Cs, E8s and E9s for example), so it’s not a new concept for Metra. The MACHs might also eliminate the need to have two units double-heading, which occurs on select trains during the week. I’ve heard they’re surprisingly quick units for their big size, with only 4 of the axles powered.
I wish it had a cowl body and a physical air horn
That’d certainly be interesting! They do have physical horns. K5LLAs mounted on the long hood.
@@SamLovesTrains they just look like cheaply rebuilt freight locomotives they need a cowl body like the f40c
@@Mauscmkwk I mean... they ARE rebuilt freight locomotives. Wasn't cheap but they were freight
trains
0:19 that sounds absolutely HORRIBLE!!

Good video, but I gotta ask why breach the grade crossing gates to get a good shot of the incoming train? This gives us fellow railfans a bad look in the eyes of the locomotive engineer and conductor.
They already have their hands full with operating the 🚆 train without trying to second guess what a railfan holding a video camera or smartphone is doing beyond the crossing gate.....
We can railfan with respect and safety for those who work the trains in this great industry we admire, the railroad industry......
Thanks, but where did I breach the crossing gates?
looks like great camera work, do not see any problem
That track dip in the first seconds ist just unbearable. And when is the US finalling ditching the Diesel Locomotives and electrifying the railroad network FFS.
We in the old world can afford power lines above the tracks and therefore we get stuff like the Siemens Vectron. And if we somehow run out of power lines, there is the Vectron DualMode or the Stadler EuroDual etc. Compared to the latest gen Euro Locomotives, that SD70MACH thing looks like a Dinosaur from the 1960s.
The SD70MACH according to wikipedia is remanufactured to decrease emissions. Welp, wouldnt be a thing if it was for electricity...
take your complaints and shove them
