I had never heard of David Nadien before TwoSet sent me down here to watch this performance. Man, have I missed out; it's been a while since a single performance made me tear up.
Not that I've ever really KNOWN his playing well, I was shocked to see that TwoSet video. I can't believe more people haven't heard OF him, if not heard him, because he did recordings of the Suzuki material. Because of this, I and many, many others have heard his name since we were children.

A great master of the golden age of violin playing. I miss old school artists like Mr. Nadien, who without distracting contortions, grimaces, and extraneous movements, are able to move my heart with their elegant, soulful, inimitable playing. Thank you for posting this video.

No matter though, he did live a life most people could only ever dream of. Those FBI agents must have thought his impossible godly powers on the violin could be converted into dangerous powers that would inevitably pose the most dangerous threat to national security. Bastards.
Now that I have discovered David Nadien, he has become one of my favourite violinists. His playing is all the more moving because of the absence of extraneous movements, grimaces and other physical distractions. Just pure, simple and extremely beautiful music. Exquisite.
Beautiful sound, vibrato, pitch, phrasing. I feel like I'm hearing great singing on the violin. This is a good recording to clean one's ears out after listening to the horrid Dicterow solo in Swan Lake (also on TH-cam). Thanks for posting!

Ahahahahha I went to listen to that recording right after this one and can't agree more... His consistency with the vibrato alongside the warm sound, precise rubato which DOES NOT mess up the tempo and beautiful phrasing are chef's kiss! Although I do have to say that the modern interpretation of Black Swan Pas de Deux tends to fit the evil side of the Black Swan better, making a very harsh and aggressive sound... I guess it's just the modern interpretation, perhaps back in the days Black Swan used to be more charming and illusionary, for which a sweet, juicy sound works the best and adds more depth to the interpretation...
This is the most haunting piece of music I've ever heard. It almost feels like the violin is crying.... a gentle, soulful cry that captures every inch of your body. The first time I heard this piece, tears just started flowing. This man was SO talented!
This performance makes me flashback my whole life, since my childhood, how fun and adventurous it is, all ups and downs, how we meet new people, loosing loved ones, all sad and tears, laugh and joy, our journey as human beings. And after all, David Nadien performed it superbly wonderfull
I've listened to this numerous times, and every time seems like the first. There is a very interesting documentary about an hour long with David on TH-cam.
I hit replay on this execution so many times I lost count. Every once in a while I have to come back to this. P.s. the old nyphil violin section here sound like a youth orchestra compared to nowadays. But God we don't have people like Nadien anymore. They don't make anymore this kind of sound
He played so beautiful, so gentle, sweet and clear, the last time I really listened to classical music was years ago but I was really touched by this and nearly crying.
I don't think their are any violinists today who could play like that. It's a style from the past that has sadly been lost. I would gladly exchange the great players of the past, when Heifetz was king, with the players of today. The last player I heard play with this wonderful style was Erich Friedman, I've never heard such a sound in my life. That was at the Wigmore Hall in 1975.

I especially like the distinction you make about music making along with everything else you said. There are so many examples of my own musical taste that are just like that: I am aware that emotional urgency (and or other elements) are "over the top" but I am still swept away by it. I listened again to Nadien's interpretation in which I now sense a profound sensuality among other things. There's a lot to the way he does it. It's just so different than what I had become use to. Thanks!
He is probably the most unknown great violinist of the 20th century. He had Heifetz like chops. He went off to do studio work because it paid more. True story.

He played with our Seattle Youth Symphony a few times back in the 70's. A live Brahms Violin Concerto. It's on ytbe.
