I love how you call that Forbidden Planet “small” - the comics shop where I get most of my mangas is like one tenth of it. 😄 I’m not an _Omni_ editions fan either, but I guess they can come in handy for someone who wants to read old series (like i.e. Red River or Fushigi Yuugi) that in the regular format have long gone out of print.
I've not yet read the Medalist, but you're not the first one I've heard who was kind of meh about the first volume, but people on Twitter seem to love it so I guess it needs time to get really good??
I much prefer singles to omnibus volumes but I think for long/large series like Haikyu and Fairy Tail they're convenient for people wanting to collect the manga but maybe don't have the right space for a full-on big display. I'll be honest though, I didn't even know Fairy Tail had omnibus volumes until now 😂
