The "going a step deeper" point is a great way of putting it. I would also add that this works in both directions. You also want to understand the business requirements and the way people are actually using your code. If you're serving customers you should try understand them and how they use your apps, if you are building tools for devs you should strive to understand how they are using your tools, if you are building apis for devs you should try to understand how they are consuming them. In my book the best devs don't only understand HOW to build good tech, they also understand WHY and for WHOM they are building it.
From an ops perspective, I always compare cloud providers for each use case. Linode does great for my perspnal needs, but ofc AWS has so much momentum that it can't be understated how useful it is to have some experience with it.
I tried watching an earlier podcast from a few months ago but it was effectively obliterated with micro jump cuts making it totally unwatchable. It looks like nothing has changed. I’m going to continue to avoid watching any further episodes until they actually have a natural pacing to them. Those pauses are important.
That explanation for Idiocracy is terrible. The story was not about educated vs non-educated. It was about smart and informed vs dumb & ignorant. Huge difference between the two. You can be educated and still be an idiot.
I really enjoy these conversations. I've been a fan of James's channel for a long time. Thanks for these interviews.

Wow this was a fantastic episode. Showed all the areas I need to improve. Thank you both
