It's almost like two of the stages of grieving, the first sounded more like a sassy/angry telling of the story while this version seems to portray more of a sorrowful acceptance of the situation.
Honestly this is the best way to put it. The first one kind of felt like she was saying “yeah I did but this is why” while this one felt more dark and sorrowful.
Makes sense. She recorded the first version when she was 16 then had two years to process that horrible heartbreaking parting of a loved one. First version was sass, empowerment, frustration. This is pure melancholy.

There aren’t enough superlatives for me to covey how much I absolutely love this jazz rendition.
Angelina is the only female vocalist I know of that not only co-wrote a soon to be grammy winning song, but she also reimagined it in different genre’s and renditions. Who else does that?
IMO, this pure jazz version is a consummate master work. Angelina is single handedly introducing the younger generation to the jazz genre, for which so many who have never listened to jazz before in their lives. Angelina is razing jazz from obscurity back to being the uniquely wonderful genre that it is.
