    I'm rooting for this channel's success. This video was so much more than just a Top 10, you have essentially created a documentary about the NEC PC-98 complete with commentary and discussion. On modern TH-cam, "Top 10," is a category of videos that is known for lots of low effort content. Many people who may have otherwise chosen to watch your video might not have clicked because it was a, "Top 10," style of video. I only clicked because I recently became interested in the PC-98, which is quite niche. I was expecting something much lower in quality than this, but was pleasantly surprised. I would suggest changing up your titles to be more enticing, and also dropping the transitions in your video(s) and just making it one, long form, commentary-style video. Keep up the good work
    Note: Edited because I forgot to fill out the comments field lol, I have never donated to anyone on youtube.

      Thank you so much for the donation and your valuable feedback.
      I use the "Top 10" thing simply because it attracts more people to the channel, a bit "clickbaity" I know but it works. As for the transitions, I didn't used to have them in my videos but a lot of people starting asking me to split videos into "chapters" and this was the best way to do that.

      @@TheLairdsLair Hey man, thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to come across as though I was criticizing you, I'd say it's probably best to follow what your community has asked for, and if they've asked for those things, then keep doing it for sure. Your channel is way bigger than any of the ones I've ever created in the past, and you definitely know more about TH-cam than I do. My experience is mostly just limited to being a viewer on the platform for about 16 years at this point.
      When i wrote that comment, i had only seen the one video, and me personally i just remember a time when i kept getting "Top 10" style videos with robotic voiceovers and low effort shovelware content in my recommended a few years back. Perhaps I was a little biased or misguided due to my previous experience, and kinda just wrote off "top 10" style videos in general because of that.
      I'm a software engineer and I have a ton of project ideas I want to work on, and I was thinking about starting a TH-cam channel myself in the future where I make videos about my programming projects. Lighter on the technical side of things and heavier on the entertainment/commentary aspect. So lately I've also been thinking about marketing on TH-cam -- essentially what types of videos that would entice me personally to click.
      I'll stay tuned, keep up the good work!

      I wasn't taking it as a criticism don't worry, I just thought you might be interested to hear my rationale. You are correct though, most Top 10 videos out there on TH-cam are just clickbait rubbish.
      I did a workshop for kids fairly recently on getting into TH-cam and pretty much the first thing I said was make videos about something you love, the kind of videos you would want to watch. If you don't have the passion for your subject matter there is no point.

    A really great machine, much more important than its lewd reputation among those who didn't know it enough. PC-98 was a beast! This episode is a real favorite, you gave a great deserving coverage to this Japanese system. Bravo!

    I think the pc88 had a better legacy considering it was not only a business machine but also did had many nintendo games on it.

    • @relo999
      @relo999 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Only really outside of Japan are those 8 nintendo games even relevant though. And it also doesn't help that every video even mentioning those games emulate them, and seeing as the whole NEC line of platforms is poorly emulated on a good day those games are emulated poorly and don't behave like they do on real machines. (And then in reviews complain it plays bad, which is due to poor emulation)
      That said the PC98 was released less than a year after the PC88, with the PC88 being the budget option. While the PC88 certainly had its own identity especially at the end of its life, but for most of it's gaming library it has the worse versions of games which often released at the same time or close together. What a lot of people, especially outside the west, and including this video, is that NEC's computer lines were for different market segments and for most of their lives were available with other lines especially in the early 80s. For example the PC60 was the "home-use budget option", the PC80 the legacy option, the PC88 the "home office" machine and the PC98 the workstation machine. (With some like the 80SRII and and the PC66 to maintain these tiers, but failed due to the market adjusting). And by the mid to late 80's the PC98 was the default Japanese computer.

    Do you happen to know where I can find a disk image of Elite Plus for the PC-98? I downloaded an emulator specifically to try out that game, but when I went looking for it, I couldn't seem to find a copy on the net. I saw a lot of games with Japanese filenames, so if it was among those, I wouldn't have been able to recognize it.

      @@TheLairdsLair I'm starting to wonder if it actually exists, or if the sites that list it as coming out for the PC-98 have it listed in error. I can't find any screenshots or videos of it, and it SEEMS like a game that would be listed by its English title.
      I mainly wanted to try it because it's hard to emulate the DOS version properly. DOSBox will run it just fine, but I have no idea what the proper speed setting should be. If I set the speed such that the animation is smooth, the game plays much too fast. If I slow it down to make the game playable, then the animation gets choppy. I was hoping that the PC-98 emulator would just default to running the game at the proper speed.

      @TheLairdsLair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you tried the Acorn Archimedes version? I am sure that is Elite Plus too.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheLairdsLair Technically, it's just Elite, although it is considered to be the best official version in that the player is no longer the sole focus of the game. Other ships will engage in battles on their own. I did try it a couple times, but I'm not very familiar with the Archimedes and was having trouble figuring out how to make a save disk. Unfortunately, none of the emulators I tried had save states. I also couldn't figure out how to use a joystick and wasn't able to get anywhere using a mouse or the keyboard.
      Plus, I kind of want to try Elite on every system that it's available for. :)

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never played on real hardware so I can't comment. It may be emulation issues or it might be because the PC-98 doesn't have anything like hardware sprites or scrolling to help with making games smooth.

    • @relo999
      @relo999 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheLairdsLair It's the emulation. On real hardware most of these games look a lot better, though RPG's tend to have the very choppy "no animation inbetween tile movement" way of moving characters.
      NEC's line of computers, as most other Japanese computers, have famously poor emulation with limited compatibility with software. It's roughly on the level of emulation accuracy as early to mid 90's NES emulators (which is due to some Japanese cultural reason it and a much more niche retro computing subculture it seems).
