I use tape to hold all th quills I am using on one side of earring and measure the same size before cutting. The sticky tape holds the sharp part and you can dispose of it. I mrasure porcupine quills all the same size and length. Just a thought to make it easier for you.

Im no pro, but here’s a tip my grandma told me: soak it in warmish hotish water to soften it so the needle will go through easier
