This morning my wife and I were talking about dying yarn, and the advantages of kool aid over Rit. I have used koolaid to dye pelts for fly tying, it works great.

Just a clarification on wampum, generally the white beads were made from the inner column of the channeled or knobbed whelk called wampum or (white tribute), the purple was made from the quahog and called suckawuhak or (purple shell) !

Thank you for your clarification, l had always been told that the white beads were from the more abundant white part of the quahog making the purple beads more precious. I appreciate your input because I would rather know the truth than a myth.

I’m a member of the Pequot and Narragansett tribes in CT and RI on the coast of Long Island Sound where purple quahogs were abundant most of the shells back then were almost entirely purple on the inside besides just the thumb print, with modern clam farming the white shells are bred and released into the wild causing less and less purple in the shells… in modern times the quahog is used for both the white and the purple but that’s in part due to the decline in the population of whelk!

Duke is a big dog now 7mths old. lifts his leg to half mast when he does his business chases everything including Marvin we have a least weasel lives in the old shop we call him Snowball

Joshua Swagger, that’s a great idea. I picked up a book last year called “ To Please The Caribou “ and I love the concept. It’s all about painted caribou skin coats. Awesome.
Koolaid coloring is colorfast 😳 i dont think thats correct.... good to know 🤔 I also didnt know the quill can bend
Hello @ooXChrissieXoo, so happy you found our channel. Yeah, the things I have done with Koolaid dyed quills have held up very nicely. I did work on the back of a couple of my hats which got a lot of sun and the color stayed very bright. Makes me wonder what it does in one’s belly!😳And yes ,warm water makes the quills quite pliable.
My grandmother would use her front teeth to flatten the quill out. I truly wished I was older and paid attention to her. Tradition gone :(
