There's a reason why scenes like this are so powerful. It's one thing to tell kids "don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs." But it's another thing to show them the damage drugs and alcohol can do.

This was a powerful scene on so many levels, but a detail that I think gets lost is that Angela didn't persist in saying "we'll talk about this" or "you'll get better" after Shawn pushed her. She didn't try to excuse it or placate him. She told him he was responsible for himself and left. There are a lot of people not able to do that in reality. Showing that it's possible here sends such a strong message.

I give the show credit for that. The problem I've found with older shows when it comes to drinking is this weird assumption that one drink would just spiral into alcoholism without any reason for the addiction in the first place.
I believed that as a kid and would try to warn friends but I ended up looking like an asshole then

@@ZainR This episode also points out that alcoholism can run in a family and some people are more prone to addiction than others. Cory and Shawn both drank that night, but Cory stopped and Shawn didn't. There could be a genetic predisposition or issues with his upbringing or both, but the point is, one night of drinking doesn't make most people into raging alcoholics, but some people are vulnerable to it and need to be wary.

Nowadays with social media, tinder, etc. people's friend groups and dating choices are much bigger, so if something gets hard they can just drop someone and move on to someone else.
That also makes friendships and relationships more superficial.

The problem is, Lizzie (can I call you Lizzie?) is that I seize every oppurtunity to feel morally superior to others, and if I can Lord something over someone then it helps to heal the hurting that is going on inside me.
I would totally use this oppurtunity to build myself up by tearing Shawn down. Not only that, but I would use his treatment of his girlfriend as an excuse to be violent towards him under the guise of 'outrage' or 'wanting to protect her'. This reminds me of this one guy I dated. Thank God he never put his hands on me, but he got very verbally abusive, and he was always angry and getting into fights with everyone. He always found something to complain and argue about, and couldn't stop drinking if his life depended on it. So I ended it and never looked back since. He really thought me marrying him was going to make him stop drinking. I'm glad I'm not putting up with that anymore, but it still makes me sad to think about the future we could've had had he not been an alcoholic. But now I'll never know.

I once was with someone I cared about and loved very much who also showed the signs.. and just like you he would propose and say he wasn’t drinking much. But I felt in my heart he’d never be better and I’d the the small stresses would set him off, I can’t imagine what having a mortgage and a bunch of kids would do to him. We dodged bullets babe ❤

Shawn in my opinion had some of the best performances and story arcs. A kid who didn't think he'd ever make it. Even as an adult he still kind of didn't think he would. But he did. As much as I would have loved for him to have ended up with Angela. I'm glad he found a wife and a kid that he just adores because lets face it he had a tuff life but always had his friends to help him get through it.

I was a ride or die Boy Meets World fan as a kid. Listening to this now as an adult, the dialogue is way too mature sounding for actual teens. Also, I can see that they're probably in their early 20s playing teens...classic move. Still, the nostalgia is great. I loved this bunch.

I literally took these lessons to heart. Alcoholism runs in my family to the point of violence. I'm grateful for the honesty this show portrayed. Alcoholism is not easy to get past. It's an addictive drug that changes the person like night and day. It's harder when the person appears to be fun under the influence but drinking to numb their pain. I wish more shows would be this honest.

  • @crimsondeath84

Alcoholism runs in my family. Both of my parents had problems with drinking and sadly it led to my mother’s death. I don’t ever want to put any of my loved ones through anything like that which leads me to a quote I go by. I do drink occasionally and whenever I’m asked how I’m able to keep it under control, I say “I learned from my parent’s mistakes”. I have those who love and care deeply about me and I have my little one to think about because I’m all he has.

Both of you should stay as far away from alcohol as you can. Before you know it it could become a problem especially if it runs in your genes. Just count your blessings and find better more positive things to do. Alcohol is the gateway drug to everything. Never lose your imagination. Find something passionate and focus on that.

2:02 this episode was definitely written by someone who's been around alcoholism. "Why don't you go across the street from her and cry". That was a viscous, personal, kill shot of an insult. About something you could only know because someone that loves you confided in you. And you are so numb because of your addiction you threw it in their face

I remember at one time these shows were called sexist because the main characters were male, but growing up, it was the impact of scenes like this that made me fall for it.
I watched a bit of the sequel and was stoked to see Cory and Tepenga, but it felt like a shallow imitation at best... the best friend had serious issues to deal with but instead of having a heart-felt communication like this, that might become a subplot for the next couple of episodes, they would sit on a windowsil and cover it up with a rug.
So glad to see a scene like this and realize that I hadn't become jaded, but Boy Meets World is that good.
