Can You Permanently Ruin Cast Iron?

  • In this video, Mr. Cast Iron talks about four ways that can permanently damage your cast iron skillet or pan. Cast iron is very durable and can take a licking and keep ticking, but it is not indestructible. You can ruin a cast iron skillet if you are not very careful. Extreme temperature changes can ruin cast iron cookware. It can be ruined by rust. And, unfortunately, it can be ruined by dropping it onto the concrete floor and cracking or breaking it into pieces!

    Took my Grandma's 1930's or 40's Wagner off the shelf to bust up some ice in one of those big bags you get from the store. Cracked it right in the center, broke my heart. For your viewers that may be new to cast iron...please know while they are heavy and look tough, cast iron is very brittle and takes a lot less than you might think to crack or break one. Trust me, I know.💔🤦‍♂️

    Cast iron is very durable. To season, just heat your skillet up to a bright red with a cutting torch and pour in
    some burnt motor oil. It's best to do this outside and not in your shop.

    I'm 50-some years old, and I was born and raised in a cast iron cooking family.
    I've had my own cast iron pots & pans while raising my own family over the past three decades. Never had a problem like this strange thing that just happened to me recently: I bought a brand new15-inch Ozark Trail cast iron skillet from walmart.
    Brought it home, used it a couple weeks, no problem, really wonderful BIG old thing. And then one day, when I had put in the 150° oven to keep some bread warm, I heard a LOUD noise - sounded like a gunshot 😮... figured out within a few minutes that my cast iron skillet had cracked nearly in half. Never seen anything like that in my whole life! Strangest thing.

    Uncle Mikey, a VERY DEAR friend, shipped me a BSR #8 Century, and it arrived with a broken handle..I had it welded back on, the welder asked if I wanted it like new, or to show the repair..I chose to show, as part of the charm, it’s my daily driver, my VERY most FAVORITE piece, it’s my Trash Can Pan, (TCP), otherwise known as Patches, as it developed another crack, and I had that welded up too😆😆😆😆…it has more sentimental value, then 100 butterpats!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

    like the cold water in hot cast iron i heard turning an electric burner to a high temp can cause cast iron to warp or crack, again just from what i heard.

      For decades I have believed that is what has caused the vast majority of spinners. I was born, raised and spent most of my life in Kentucky and Mark Twain said, “When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Kentucky, because everything there happens 20 years after it happens anywhere else.” I can remember when a lot of people got electric ranges for the first time and people warned that cast iron skillets were getting warped right and left.

    • @Sentone1000
      @Sentone1000 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jerrym3261 like i have said it is from the sudden high heat over a period of time, so i learn to start on low heat for 5-10 minutes or longer, but that is only on electric ranges so that way the cookware can have a chance to adjust to the cooking method, again just what i heard and is what i do since i found out.

    • @jerrym3261
      @jerrym3261 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Sentone1000 I have heard it's not just the heat that causes the warp, it's that the part that contacts the coil gets hot and expands while the metal right next to it doesn't get nearly as hot and it holds the hot part from expanding. A fire on the other hand spreads heat over the pan more evenly. I know when you weld cast iron and it breaks again, it doesn't break in the weld, it breaks next to the weld. If you heat the piece your welding, weld it and keep it from cooling off too quickly, it will hold.

    Dear Sir,
    nice to dee you are an enthousiast for cast iron. I abuse mine in the way you discibed.
    I deglase my pans with water and wine, have cooked with them in bonfires.... No Ive not droped them on hard grounds.. yet ....
    Ive the luxury of being the son of an old school motor/diesel mechanic. My father abuses the enigeines even more. That crack, that chip can be silversolderd/ hardsoldered (750 Celcius) with a blowtorch. Cracks can be filled in the same way, even with motorblock.
    Indeed, the trick is even heating or cooling.
    For your idea and expended knowlegde on seasoning: have a talk with a old school blacksmith on the use of Puddlesteel and Cast Iron...... and the roasting to low carbon steel from high carbon iron in pré industrial time...... Then you learn to reincorporate carbon into your pans/skillets and season it for real.
    In case of an emergency: Deep frying patatoes and or chicken for a long time 10h in a day will season these pans very fast
    Yours......

    I've burned a lot of cast iron in fires. It is pretty amazing how little wood it takes to burn off a skillet and I'll always err on the side of having too little and doing it again. Also, it seems almost impossible for people to leave a fire alone anymore. You don't need to be messing with the pan or the fire, leave it alone until it's cold, cold cold.

      @@MrCastIron I think the skill of using wood fire as a tool is mostly lost in our modern world. I don't know if I could cook on a wood or coal cook stove where the lid comes off of the eye and the pan goes on but, I'd like to give it a try. I could see it could get too hot pretty easily.

    Ok Can we have a moment of silence for that BSR skillet. Oh and Don't throw that away. I know it won't be the same but it will still be around. My dad dropped his little square egg skillet and knocked the handle off of it a few months ago. I have no Idea what it was and never will because he trashed it. The black is oil, aka seasoning. You heat up the skillet in the oven to get it warm. Rub canola oil on the inside and out, stick back in the oven, and smoke the oil until it stops smoking. Let cool do that about 3 to 4 times or until completely black
