Husky C302H 30 gal Ultra Quiet Air Compressor Review

  • This units was shipped to my house ready to go. Check the oil, plug it in, and follow the break in procedure and you are set to go.
    It is really surprising how quiet a compressor this size can be (relative to compressors). It is even a little quieter than my 6 gallon pancake compressor. It runs very smoothly. It doesn't shake or vibrate, which surprised me. It is a big heavy unit, but the wheels built into it make it easy to move. After I followed the break in procedure and gave it a rest, it only took a little over seven minutes to fill the whole tank. The air release valve on the bottom is not very fun to access, but it is do-able.
    After having the 6 gallon compressor for years it is really nice to have a compressor that can handle a load and not be constantly turning on and off. If you are using tools that really like the air, you will really like the big tank and smooth compressor.

    A very simple and good air compressor review. Just bought a used one and I was REALLY CURIOUS about how long would take to fill out a empty tank, because I found some oil residue in the air tank, instead of water...., I know, at least it didn't rust, but in the same time I wonder about the pump reliability... The previous owner said he only added around 2 oz in the last 2 years, I don't know if that's normal or not, if the pump still has some life in it or not....
    Now, it really made me curious about the 0 to 150 psi fill up time, tomorrow I'll check this out to see how much the difference is! Hopefully not a HUGE difference....
    Thanks again for this video!

    Thanks for pulling out the stop watch. The time it took (7:15) to fill the tank is about the time it takes for my 20 yr old craftsman 30 gal single piston direct drive oilless to fill after I replaced the piston ring & cleaned/straightened the reed valve. I wish it was a belt drive like yours because mine is absurdly loud.

    These can be upgraded quite easily to drastically shorten their recovery time. Larger aftermarket air filters are an excellent idea as well as using Lucas synthetic air compressor oil.

      what kind of modifications do you suggest and do you have links?

    • @Bird76Mojo76
      @Bird76Mojo76 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sterlingmaxima101 I don't have the part numbers anymore, but the 2 air filters use a standard NPT pipe thread, so upgrading air filters to larger units is easy. You just need an industrial supply store near you to size up some larger filters and compare them to yours. The Lucas Air Compressor Oil I've only found online, and it's not cheap. Luckily, you only need one bottle.

    My air compressor needs to be replaced with one of these. The one I have doesn't have enough psi for my air wrench to take a lug off. And it is loud. Very loud. Wish I would have never got it. I use my POS one for blowing out parts, fans, vacuum cleaners, etc-etc. I need to step up my game. Great review!

      +Chris DIYer I was surprised how nice this one is. So much more quiet and smooth than my old one.

    Belt drives are always very quiet I keep an oilfree 13gallon on my work truck it's loud as all get out but it gets the job done in my shop I got 29 gallon Harbor Freight it works very well too

    My friend has one like that, we put a elbow & a pipe nipple on the bottom to drain the tank. They are nice units if U are using it around the home & not working it to death like I do with my big one in my shop. It is very load & shakes the ground through 8 inches of concrete. But its also 27 years old. I moved that beast 5 times it goes with this home now not moving it again.

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheKilog69 This unit is pretty heavy, but fairly easy to move. I just got a framing nailer, and that little pancake can't keep up with a pin nailer, so it was time for a change.

    Just bought this model today, and love it. Thanks for this video. I concur...extremely quiet. Way quieter than my oil sump Harbor Freight 8-gallon horizontal, which went kaput on Sunday. This unit seems to be identical to the Kobalt version at Lowe's, but is $50 cheaper. I plan to add a line dryer and revised drain as well.

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is super quiet but the video probably doesn't demonstrate that very well. Lowes and Home Depot carry many of the same items with different labels.

    • @GregsZenithSTOLCH750
      @GregsZenithSTOLCH750 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Home Depot recently dropped the price from $429 to $399. Lowes has it for $449. I think perhaps it is year-end price reduction to make room for new models. I bought the 3-year service plan too (normally I don't, but I'm building an airplane, and there are thousands of rivet holes to drill and rivets to pull). Hoping this will last a long time, but at the very least, the length of the project. Thanks again! Great summary of the unit.

    If you extend your condensate drain, you'll be glad you did. Also, you can extend your oil drain so the task isn't so messy. No sense in doing *that* before the next scheduled oil change, though. I makes keeping up with the maintenance so easy that you might not skip it like so many people do. Nice vid, tyvm!

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that drain is a pain to get to.

    • @ronyerke9250
      @ronyerke9250 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fernbark Frist not everyone does it, but I stabilize my drain extensions by using zip ties to secure the end to a wheel or vibration dampers mount. I worry about loosening it up or snapping it off when I roll my little compressor around.

    Thank you for the review, I am thinking of picking up a used unit to replace my oil-less craftsman compressor. I have a choice between a Dewalt and this Husky, just curious what people's experience have been between the two even though both might be made by the same company - Sanborn .

    Several comments:
    - many measuring apps for smart phones don't really work very well, and they don't come with any specifications, calibration reports, or anything to let you know that the person who wrote the app knew what they were doing. The dB readings might be quite inaccurate.
    - What frequency, or range of frequencies, does this phone app respond to? In this situation, the overall full spectrum dB reading is not important. What is more important is a dB reading of those frequencies that are most likely to be perceived as noise. This Husky model makes a fair amount of low frequency noise, but that does not seem to the human ear to be as annoying as the high frequency sound coming from some of the less expensive compressors, yet they might show, on a general purpose dB meter, the same dB readings.

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Smart phones don't work well for measuring sound. But since I am not currently interested in investing in a properly calibrated sound meter for the two videos a year where I might want that information, I guess I will just use what I have available in order to provide some level of data other than me saying "it seems quieter than the other one". Thanks for the comment.

    A good idea is to lower your cut out pressure switch by 15 psi,,it will extend the life of the compressor,,,you will notice it will labor getting from 120 psi to 155,,,I lowered mine to 130,,,more pressure then you should ever need

    Could you let us know more about HOW TO Modify the Air Release Valve PLEASE???

    • @FernbarkFrist
      @FernbarkFrist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All you are looking to do is make it easier to reach. You could make a handle to fit the valve or just decide to sacrifice a vice grip to the cause and stick that on there. It is not really a major engineering feat.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Husky makes a product to 'remote' the drain valve, their number 1000 053 233. You unscrew the original drain valve on the bottom of the tank, and screw the new device in its place, and it has a steel braided hose that extends out from under the tank, and ends with a fitting that has a knob that you turn to release condensation.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Pellicone, Home Depot and other places sell extenders for sure compressors. You tip the tank over, unscrew the original drain valve, screw in the end of the extender and tip the tank back to vertical, and you are done. The extender is a hose or perhaps a length of pipe that extends out from under the tank, and it has a new drain valve on the accessible end. On mine, I also added an automatic compressor tank drain timer, which I have set to open for 5 seconds once an hour.

    The spec on the website is 75. Odd you saw 83ish db. But who knows how they calculate it or how accurate the meter is.

    • @daveeckblad

      their measurement is stated as "outdoors" which would be quieter than in a garage.

    • @FernbarkFrist

      Yes. I have it plugged in my garage in this video. The only thing to watch for is that it pulls 15 amps at start up, so it should not be sharing an outlet.

    • @youtuuba

      It is rated for continuous use, but the manual recommends not exceeding 50% to prolong the life of the compressor.
