    Au contraire! The radio sounds like a dream come true. This entire video is my heaven from the way the steering wheel sounds and it’s textures and feel and look and so much more about this! ‘90s cars are The Most BEAUTIFUL cars on the planet. I would know, I’m a true ‘90s kid because I was born in the ‘80s. 💐💖☀️🚗🚙

    I had a 1987 Volvo 240 turbo for years back in the mid to late 90's and gave it to my daughter, and she drove it for years. Best car I ever had. Presently looking for another one, but they are hard to find here in Ohio. Great videos by the way. It brings back some great memories.

    Love the _tractor_ reference. Actually, my first Volvo was a 72 145e with the B18 red block tractor engine block which ran incredibly well for its 420,000 mile life.
    My current 92 240GL has the same _sewing machine_ sound as yours which is, of course, the sound we love.

      Had a friend that had the same first car. His would break down frequently. The engine would shut off while driving and it was falling apart. He had it for 2 years after spending more than he paid for it on repairs every year (he paid $1800) .

      Awesome! My 1983 was my first car too. Fantastic cars. Take care of it and it'll take care of you. Be sure to keep the door hinges, hood hinges, and trunk hinged lubricated. I'm replacing valve springs in mine now after one broke. You shouldn't have to ever do that to yours though. Maintenance is not bad on these, but listen to it when it tells you that something is wearing out. Preventative maintenance is so important. It will give you plenty of warning when something is worn out, so you'll have plenty of time to fix whatever you need to before it breaks.

    I bought a gold one like yours from out of state and just picked it up 2 days ago. I will make my car your car's twin, man. I love your car (and mine). I like your plastidip work on the side trim and roof. And as you said, "It's hard to believe that something this cool looking is mine". Very true!

    A 1976 242DL was my second car as an 18 yr old. Got the back deck cut out for 6x9 speakers, bought a radio shack 40 watt amp/7 band EQ. For about $125 total (1986 money), I had a sound system that would compete with ones from today. The Volvo's spacious trunk made those 6x9's sound as if there was a subwoofer back there.

    Awesome video. I had a 1986 240 DL, and I really miss it. That thing drove awesome. And the thing I liked about it it was solid metal not like these newer cars. I’ve got a new beetle now but I still wish that I had my old Volvo.

    100% agree about tires. Always good to get the best tire you can afford. -Which are usually Michelin's for me, as well.
    Also, the 240 seems like a solid road trip car! What kinda gas mileage does it get on the highway?

    • @Jakeman21642
      @Jakeman21642  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Haven't done enough long highway drives to really get an accurate number but around town it usually gets a solid 23-24 MPG rolling around with the AC on. Not any worse than any of the other 90's 4 cylinder automatic cars I've owned.

    • @jacobbelcher3512
      @jacobbelcher3512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have consistently gotten 46 mpg highway before, but that's on a 70 degree day and just me in the car while going 75mph. On a hot day with the a/c going and doing 65 mph I get somewhere in the 30s. But my typical mix of city and highway driving I get 22 mpg. They're pretty good numbers, but really good considering the car's boxiness. Results may vary, but it helps to keep the flame trap really clean and to run 10w-30 conventional oil in the summer and 5w-20 in the winter and 2,500 miles between oil changes.

    Hey I'm in Virginia too! What part of Virginia are you in? I daily my 1983 240. It's a different animal with a manual transmission and it is actually zippy. It's not fast by any means, but the gearing makes it fun. Getting into top (4th) gear at 30 mph for normal acceleration is not great for the highway but it makes it fun on twisty back roads. Loved the video, and the car.

  • @MarkJones-si2bb

    Is your mileage guage correct? 35,000-odd miles? ... My 1984 242 is showing its age, but the body is in fairly good shape, w 5-6 new internal components. My mechanic says the 2 doors are rare. Does this 4-door have the uber cool secret trunk pass through to allow transport of skis or other long objects through the middle of the car?
    Parts are getting tougher to find, yours looks sweet. Mine (240k miles) has the plastic dash cracked fairly bad, square plastic dash piece sad, and driver's seat trashed. Top auto upholstery co wants $525 or $575 to rebuild it. Little plastic headliner bolt covers (1" x 2") on passenger & driver's side have cracked and disintegrated. I do have the original round chrome hubcaps stored away. Bought a new back tail light from IPD, and it has gaps in the plastic cover! I need to call to see if its an odd duck, or if their stock all has poor Chinese quality. Unknown rattle on the driver's side wheel well (charcoal canister?), and an ocassional pesky rattle in the back (possibly bushings). The fun of old cars! Yours is in prime condition. Congrats.

      As a previous owner of one, they are fine. I could easily hit speeds as high as 80mph without much difficulty. Since the cars are light (most are just under 3000lbs) you do feel the wind moving the car. However, they are overall pretty comfortable, okay on gas (20 - 25 mpg depending on the state of the car) and have awesome visibility. Hope this helps!

    • @jacobbelcher3512
      @jacobbelcher3512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're awesome highway cars. So smooth, but noisier than any newer car. My 1983 is pushing 100db at 60mph, so it's pretty loud but I don't mind it because it's a 36 year old car. As already mentioned, mine gets tossed around in the wind like crazy but to me that's just part of the experience. I have the m46 transmission (4 speed manual with electric overdrive) and it keeps up with traffic fine. It's running 2,300 rpm at 60mph with a 3.41 rear end and 185/70R14 tires. On a day that's around 70 degrees (F) I tend to get upwards of 40 mpg on the highway. But when I do a good mix of city and highway then my average is around 22 mpg. The only thing is that they are slow to reach highway speeds (mine does 0-60 in 20 seconds). But they have no problem doing 80 as the other guy said. Mine runs about 2,800 rpm at that speed and it handles it easy, but I found it's most fuel efficient at 75 mph and it takes less throttle to keep it at that speed than it does at any other speed, which sounds strange but it's true.

    Does the DL use diesel or what does the D stand for? I thought these cars used the b230 red block engine but then I hear 240’s run on diesel?? I’m confused. I’m only educated in 740’s.

    Hey Jake, can I recommend the IPD sway bar upgrades for front and rear? I have them on my 89 DL and it was as great of an improvement as upgrading to Michelins. I only have 245k on her, and she is far more fun to road trip as compared to any of the newer cars in the driveway. Enjoy!

    Nice car! The black top is painted or vinyl? You HAVE to get ride of the stickers!! It looses it's style and becomes a grand dad car!! I do like the rims but not so much on an 240 though. The seat of your chair is crumbling. You can have it fixed or replaced and then the chair is as new! Low miles by the way!! Enjoy the car!!!

      I found mine on thingiverse. If you have access to a 3d printer you won't have to pay anything. Unless you are charged for using a 3d printer. Mine used 14 meters of filament and it was a 4 hour print. Don't use PLA for the filament because these cars get so hot inside that the plastic will warp. I learned that the hard way lol.

    So the B230F is a non-interference engine?

    • @jacobbelcher3512
      @jacobbelcher3512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The b23 is non-interference. The b230 is interference. The b230 was used starting in 1986. They have shorter pistons, fewer piston rings, thinner pistons, smaller wristpins, thinner connecting rod, different valve shims, and a few other differences that I can't think of right now, but they're very different from the b23. I have the b23 and they don't like to rev high, but the redline is 6,500 rpm. However, you're not supposed to run a stock b23 higher than 4,500 rpm if you want to make it last a really long time. The b230 also makes 127 hp and has an 11 lb flywheel, while the b23 has a 16 lb flywheel and makes 107 hp with the m45 and m46 transmissions and it makes 114 hp for the AW70 transmission. Sorry for how long this turned out to be.
