Yes, they really were meant to be a female Super Junior at first. In fact they were originally supposed to be an 11 or 12 member group and had the working title “Super Girls” but a few members left/were dropped before debut. (Two of them ended up in other kpop groups -Chanmi of Coed School and Soyeon of T-ara) There is a mashup of this with Super Juniors “Mr. Simple” which came out around the same time called Simple Boys and it’s pretty epic.

It's interesting that you're comparing them to SUPER JUNIOR. They debuted 2 years after the boys in a kpop world ruled by boys bands. They built their road slowy but surely and became the nation's pride. They are very well known in Korea. Their songs are the most iconic ones!
