  • Why Is Everyone Moving to Utah? (Mostly Californians)
People are flooding into Utah. This has been going on for a while but has really picked up steam in recent years. Most of the people are coming from California. All over California, not just Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino. It isn't just the real estate bringing them in. A quick-thinking realtor might tell you that, but it isn't 100% true. People are moving to Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden for a variety of reasons, and that is what this video is looking at.

Moved here 8 years ago and it was a hot market then. I was told by LDS coworkers that buildable land is at a premium here and often the LDS have fairly large families which has meant the inventory of homes for sale has often been low. Families which have been here for several generations have adult children who are finding it too expensive to purchase homes.

I retired from the military and moved my family to Utah in 2005. The good far outweighs the bad and, overall, we love it here. We are not LDS but chose to live in northern Utah County, which is known for being a very high percentage LDS area. My LDS neighbors are great. We politely made it clear from Day 1 that we are not interested in converting to their faith (we're Catholic) and we have tried our best to be great neighbors to them.
The biggest negative here is that the infrastructure has not kept up with the population growth. Traffic is horrible and, despite what Briggs said in the video, many schools are very crowded. The high school my kids attended was built for 2,000 students but had well over 3,000 students while they were in school. I taught at a high school that had 45-50 students in many core subject classes.
If you like the outdoors, there is no place better than Utah.

Honestly curious to see if that's remained the same since your comment a year ago and what if anything has changed. I'm currently in SC and I'm planning a trip to the SLC/Ogden area for a potential place to spot check as one of my options of areas to move to. Overall the states statistics are appealing, same with the companies there. But my main concern is the LDS community, and the stories I've heard of where they're "friendly" to non Mormons, but not particularly welcoming. As well as the horror stories I've heard of where you're treated differently if you don't share the same faith as them and how it can make you an outcast.

I moved to Utah about two years ago, and overall, I love it. I moved here for a combination of the factors you mentioned (strong communities, low crime, good schools, semi affordable) but the number one reason you didn’t mention is that just about everyone in the Utah front range is 30-60 minutes away from world class skiing! As a native Coloradan, who still loves CO, this is truly unbelievable! Plus there are many different roads to the resorts, so not everyone is stick in traffic on one road (I-70). Essentially, you can live a normal middle class life in Utah, and almost have the proximity to skiing that people would pay millions for in other states. The trail running and mountain biking are also incredible here.
As for the LDS thing, I’m Catholic and have engaged in many conversations with LDS neighbors and friends. There’s a lot to say about this, but overall, I think the positives of the LDS culture are a clear net positive for non-Mormons as they foster a caring and friendly and safe culture, generally speaking.

I've lived in Utah pretty much my whole life. When I had just graduated high school I hated Utah, but after traveling around to many other places around the country, I'm realizing how good I've got it here. The only place I'd rather live is in Norway, Austria, or Switzerland. Definately a pipe dream. With all that said, the popularity of Utah is becoming a huge problem. The road congestion has skyrocketed in the last 10 years. The traffic still isn't anywhere near LA status, but there are definately pockets that are just as bad as LA. I'd know because I've spent a lot of time in LA traffic and even more time in Wasatch Front traffic. Probably the biggest concern is the skyrocketing cost of living. Yeah it's cheaper than California, but the gap is closing. I don't know where the median home cost of 350k is coming from in this video. That stat is just not true. My guess is that condos and townhomes are lumped into that number. The median cost of a single family home across the wasatch front is probably more like 450k and really more like 525k if you don't want to live way out in the outskirts of town. I've spent far too long looking at home prices across the valley. Luckily I already own one or i'd probably be screwed. The cost of food, gas and activities is also out of control. I'm not kidding when I say the price of food has more than doubled since I graduated high school 10 years ago. Inflation is part of that, but costs have far outpaced inflation here and that's a verifyable fact if you look at the data. I remember 10 years ago I was looking for an apartment so I could move out of my parents house. Where I lived at the time in Bountiful I found several options for around $550/mo. I remember thinking that was too expensive. Now I'm sure no one believes me because the cost of that same apartment is easily upwards of $1200/mo just 10 years later. I think the most concerning of all is the fact that the wasatch front is almost "full". We're kinda land locked here between mountain ranges and all the empty space has almost been filled up. Yeah we can build on the other side of the mountains, but that's not going to be realistic for commuters and that sort of thing. That just means ever skyrocketing land values and scarcity. I love Utah, but I'm worried about what's happening.

I mean honestly I'd rather just live in Canada where health care is something you don't have to pay a fortune for, but if Utah's health care really is that great I might actually consider moving there even though I would much rather not have to live in the desert.

Most Utahns cannot afford the homes because the prices increased to match what Californians could afford with their budget and excessive incomes or income from the sale of their homes. The home prices in the 300,000.00 range is not accurate even in neighborhoods that are /were affordable in Utah the homes are
    overpriced.

The Lord blesses the people who are obedient. This community have been blessed from other state because of obedience of the beautiful kind people who started in the desert where nothing grows. It’s wonderful how lds pioneers transformed this place and the Lord blessed them. This prosperity is because of them and now people are coming to enjoy it. The Lord is observing. I’ve lived in Utah my whole life and grew up in West Valley and currently live in Murray. My condo I bought in 2016 was $97,000. Now it’s tripled. Even in places like Tooele and Grantsville that were once small towns are expensive as hell. I’m an ex Mormon but still love the state because people are nice and the state is just beautiful. Unfortunately because so many folks are moving here it’s getting crowded and the cost of living is going up. A few years ago Utah wouldn’t have a low unemployment rate if Amazon had tech companies didn’t move here. Finding a job back in 2009 after high school for me was rough. Pretty much every “data point” you state is anecdotal. That said, the state of UT has incentivized many companies for 20 plus years to come to Utah and create jobs. With jobs come people. Not the other way around, as you imply. As the state grows (which is what legislation intended) so to will the growing pains, like larger class sizes at schools, higher crime rate, strain on infrastructure, etc. This ultimately leads to higher taxes and the challenges that you cite are reasons you left CA. While you may have left for the reasons you claim, you are not correct that “most of the people moving to UT are from CA”. If you make a claim like that, you need census data. The most recent census data shows more people from TX and NV are moving to UT as compared to CA. Most people leave CA because of the cost of living but if they could afford to stay, they would. Why? Because of the weather. If you could buy a home in Santa Monica for the same price as a home in SLC, all else being equal, people will pick SoCal - every single time. And for the record, you make the blanket statement of better schools in UT, then refer to the private university of BYU. The public school system for the vast majority of UT (Park City excluded) are among the lowest ranked in the country. The schools in the West Valley of SLC are among the lowest ranked. I am a believer of continued growth in UT-I was part of the effort of a major bank moving thousands of jobs there. But I live in SoCal because of the weather and lifestyle. But if you’re correct and people are leaving CA in droves, that ultimately will be a positive for CA and a negative for UT if the reasons you mention are accurate. In other words, taxes, cost of living, crime, etc. will go higher. Lastly, the bulk of the population in UT is in SLC. The rest of UT is very rural, which distorts the undocumented statistics you mention in this video.

Hey buddy, you forgot to mention why our governor told Californians not to move here anymore. We are a desert state with limited resources. We don't have the water to sustain a population like a state like Colorado can. Add to that the fact that we have a 1700 square mile arsenic, mercury and iridium pit, covered by a shallow lake that is drying up and it might be a good idea for people not to move here and take more of our water, speeding up that process. That's right folks, what he is not telling you is that our state is teetering on the brink of becoming one of, if not the largest environmental disaster the United States has ever seen. Unless something changes quick, the Great Salt Lake is going to dry up exposing a lake bed that is chock-full of those carcinogenic chemicals. When that happens, winds blowing across that giant basin will blow giant, cancerous, dust clouds straight into the largest population center in the state all along the Wasatch Front. At that point the choice for the federal government will be spending billions on dust mitigation, piping water from the Great Lakes or the Mississippi to the Great Salt Lake, or evacuate approximately 1.6 million people.

The best times are behind us here but for now it’s still a nice place to live.

GSL is up several feet after this last winters snowpack, and still has a lot left to fill with more runoff in the High Uintas. Lake Powell expected to rise 70 feet! Problems aren't solved, but the relief will stay any toxic dust bowls for a bit longer.
Poorest air quality in the country is a hyperbole. It has been the poorest air quality on specific days that were brought on by californian wildfires. Pollution wise its better than LA or Houston for most of the calendar year... You can't take a small sample size and say that's the norm. I don’t understand the stigma of Californians moving elsewhere. What people complain of transplants moving in and making cost of living go up is what happened to CA. In all three major population dense cities LA, SF, SD a majority of the people are transplants, non native born residents. California absorbed a vast amount of liberal minded people from other states. CA use to be more conservative at one time believe it or not.

    • @FrederickTheAnon14W
      @FrederickTheAnon14W ปีที่แล้ว

CA did use to be more Conservative but than rapid growth and popularity of the state got the attention of Liberals, Who moved to the state and was "absorbed" as you call it, Who proceeded to turn the state into what it is today, And now those same Leftist Californians are leaving due to high taxes and cost of living, Crime, Homelessness, Drugs, Strict standards on guns, Et cetera.
The stigma exists because people are rightfully worried about what Californians will do to their state or area, Which clearly is not baseless due to quite a few comments by people here who actually LIVE in Utah and are getting a first-hand experience of how transplants are treating their state/area.

I keep reading all the posts about "friendly people". I have lived in many places, but though people are polite and helpful in Utah, I'm finding it impossible to actually make friends. I'm not Mormon. But I like the Mormon faith, it seems as good as any other religion. I'm finding either people here are Mormon, or they are rabidly Anti-Mormon. No one is middle of the road. And Mr. Briggs didn't mention the flat-earthers and the sovereign nation adherents. It is a hard place to fit in if you are accustomed to the diversity and open-mindedness of California. All in all though, a very good video and I enjoyed it.

I live in Hurricane, just outside of St. George... it USED to be a nice small town, maybe15,000... it's predicted that in another 25 years the population willbe 50,000!!!!! Our accident rates have skyrocketed so therefore insurance rates are almost doubling, it's getting very difficult to get in to see your doctor, housing is exploding all over the place, and all this growth is in the midst of a very bad drought. My sister and I are actually thinking of leaving Utah to get away from the Californians.

The inversion is almost a constant. Traffic is atrocious. Housing costs are 50% higher than they should be, and they aren’t going down. My family is moving to Texas right before the start of the new school year. Oh, the “Furries” are out of control at Albion Middle school also.

As an ex-Utahn who fled the state after living there for 30-ish years, I think your video is on target with one big exception and an additional comment. :)
First, I was going to point out your mistake on state income tax, but see you commented on that already.
Also, all the western states that aren't California have been whining about Californians moving to their state for at least the last 50 years. I think your current state had a popular bumper sticker at one time that said "Don't Californicate Oregon." Lots of these states are still complaining about Californians moving in. They blame them for driving up home prices and accuse them of trying to turn their new state into another California. If it was as bad as they claim then nobody would be left in California. The reality is a lot of those people moving from California are people who moved away to California and are moving back. Yes, tech companies in Utah plus the greater ability and option of "working from home" has meant people who want to move from California probably have a bit more often recently, so I don't doubt the trend you found, but also expect some Utahns to see this and panic. :)
I'd also add that the difference between the Salt Lake Valley (especially the city itself and close-in suburbs) to the rest of the state in how the people are likely to react to an "outsider" is going to be vastly different.
