40 years later, I can still hear my mom's voice from downstairs: "Turn that crap down, or I ma coming up there!!!!". This song is singlehandedly responsible for at least 3 speeding tickets in my driving record. These guys are at the top of the metal tree. How much talent, passion, professionalism and virtuosity do you want on one stage?
"The Trooper" to me is THE Iron Maiden song. It's the song that best exemplifies what made me like this band. PIECE OF MIND is easily one of my top-10 all time favorite albums and has stubbornly remained on that list since the eighties. You said "It doesn't even feel like metal, honestly. It feels like rock-metal." Metal today means something different than it did back then. This was very heavy for it's time, despite being much more melodic than what passes for metal today.
These guys knew how to put on a helluva show. I saw them 3x over the course of about 20 years, and each time they were simply outstanding. HUGE stage presence. Elaborate stage sets. Rock and roll, baby!!! ❤
Charge of the Light Brigade, by the end of the charge my many times great Uncle Morgan was the highest-ranking commander, and he was far from a high-ranking officer at the start, his horse carried him through the battle, he took his war horse home and gave him a pampered life, buried him in the old family Cemetary at home after he passed away.
Just pointing out: I got the impression you thought that the "Piece of mind" spelling was a mistake on Iron Maiden's part, but it is in fact a deliberate play on words. Tellingly, the album's original working title was "Food for thought" 🙂
R can be literal at first, then digs deeper....like a lot of those who come to rock and metal in their 20s and older, they assume at first that the directness of rap and pop are universal and have to learn that rock and metal use metaphor and directness equally for choice of interpretation and bigger picture perspectives
I was only 13 when this came out, and it- along with Black Sabbath- led me to an appreciation of metal that endures to this day. Funny thing is, I and all my friends with similar musical tastes loved the school field trips to see Classical concerts. Apparently Bach and Mozart were head-bangers...
Great reaction Maggie, this was Bruce's sophomore album after replacing Paul Di'anno. He hit the ground running with "The number of the Beast", and this showed that he didn't let up.
They literally meant a “piece” of mind and not “peace”. Both are technically correct depending on the context. You can give someone a “piece” of your mind such as letting them know your feelings about something or you can find “peace” of mind meaning your content with your feelings.
I know Trooper is a classic but if you want to hear Bruce's range, check out Flight of Icarus (the official video) off this same album. The end has one of Bruce's most epic screams, not to mention two more great guitar solos from Dave and Adrian.
I'm amazed that Bruce Dickinson can leap off of an amp stack and run flat out across the stage holding an unwavering note with perfect breath control. Jumping up and down...same thing.
Watch some live performances when Mr Dickison was in his late 40's or early 50's. He sounds just as strong, singing just as easily while running all over the stage. Oh and by that time he had taken the lessons and time that he was the lead piolet of the bands Jumbo Jet when they had to fly anywhere. Great talent and brains.
The eighties had so many great vocalists in the rock genre - Bruce Dickenson, Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, Geoff Tate, Klaus Meine, Ronnie James Dio, of course this is an incomplete list!
Now in their 60’s they are still going just as hard in here in the 80’s. I just bought tickets to see them again October of 24 at the Tacoma Dome here in Washington.
Did u know: Bassist Steve Harris doesn't use a pick playing bass - his fingers are fast- giving the unique sound. Check out "run to the hills, number of the beast, etc. Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
One of my favourite metal band awesome love this song be a iron maiden fan for years now going to see them next summer for the fourth time hi Maggie from the UK x
This song was based on the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson which tells of a military action undertaken by British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. A mounted a frontal assault against a Russian artillery. The cavalry brigade suffered terribly, with 118 men killed, 127 wounded, and about 60 taken prisoner.
Great reaction! Thank you so much for reacting to a young Bruce when he was in his prime. More iron Maiden? Yes please! Strongly suggest you listen to the official music video for Aces High.
I always find this quite an emotional song. The insane levels of sheer bloody minded courage demonstrated by the Regiments of the Light Cavalry Brigade at Balaclava was a prequel to the slaughter in WW1 in a lot of ways. I think Harris did a superb job of building in the passion and thunder of a Cavalry charge, which is of course, where the courage comes from. The momentum, the galloping. If anyone is interested in the history of the charge and the battle it was part of and the farcical events that led up to it, I cannot recommend enough the late Cecil Woodham-Smith's :The Reason Why. It's out of Print but widely available and very readable. Mrs Woodham-Smith was an Irish Historian who was a wonderful writer and also wrote the most accessible histor of the Irish Potato Famine "The Great Hunger" She was a Doctor of History at the National University of Ireland and St Andrew's University, Scotland. She would have pointed out to the Dublin crowd that 1/4 of the men who charged the Russian Guns that day were Irishmen of the 4th Light Irish Hussars and the 8th Kings Irish Hussars.
They also have an animated version of this song with the animation being done by Camp Chaos (from memory). Actually that is how you spell Piece as in a part of a whole. IE Piece of Mind as in a Slice of Mind. Edit: From memory this is a song of the battle where the bronze cannons used for the Victoria Medals were captured.
No guns were captured at Balaclava. Well, not by the British, anyway; the Russians were able to carry 7 guns (12 pounders from HMS Diamond) away from the redoubts on the Causeway Heights. The cannons used as the source for the Victoria Cross were captured later, at Sevastopol.
Bruce is a superb front Man and singer. He's as well comercial pilot of Boing and expert in swordsmanship. He e en was with the British team. And you should pay attention to Steve Harris bass guitar. He is the band soul, so you can perfectly heat the bass sound
Hi Maggie, IAN from England,So glad your listening to Lucy Thomas, she also sings with her sister Martha, there is also another artist,Putri Arriani,Simon Cowell went on stage and asked her for another song, she also does a BRILLIANT Whitney song, please please give her a listen,❤❤❤
Intersting fact that the lead singer Bruce Dickinson is also a qualified airline pilot in his spare time and also pilots the bands tour aircraft a Boeing 747 called Edd Force One when the go on tour, you should also do a reaction video about the the Sabaton song Bismark I think you'd like it , keep up the good work 😀
2:25 It's entirely the wrong uniform, though. The British light cavalry of the time wore blue tunics; red would have been worn by the Heavies (who had, earlier in the day, driven off a sortie south of the Causeway Heights by the bulk of the Russian cavalry), but the buttons go too far down to make it practical on horseback, so we can't really say it's meant to be that. Although the Heavy Brigade did win their little scuffle with the bulk of the Russian cavalry south of the Causeway heights earlier in the day, in the least well known action of the battle.
I'm sure Piece of Mind is a pun, Maggie. As in peace of mind and give you a piece of my mind. Hope to see you react to Powerslave one day. Bruce sings a dying Pharaoh in character...
nteresting fact is that the lead singer Bruce Dickinson is a qualified airline pilot in his spare time and also pilots the bands Boeing 747 plane when they go on world tours
Some things about Bruce Dickenson you may not know. He has his Captains license to fly 4 of Boing's 700 series Commercial Airplanes, including Iron Maiden's own 747.
iron Maiden are epic. They are metal bust on the softer side. They have so many good songs you can't go wrong. Number of the Beast is considered one of the best heavy rock/metal albums. Bruce was not their first singer and they had a more punk like sound on their first 2 albums but with Bruce their sound changed to something much more epic. Iron Maiden with Bruce are possibly the best metal band of all time. Bruce left the band in the 90s and Iron Maiden had a few lean years without him but he returned in 2000 and Iron Maiden are as good as ever.
Iron Maiden titled their 4th album 'Piece of mind' in 1983... the title also showcased a dark cover - their skeletal mascot 'Eddie the Head' was pictured chained in a straightjacket w/ a lobotomized skull in a padded cell... The band photo pictured the members seated at a table w/ a brain as the main course... Iron Maiden said they couldn't think of a better album title, but in the Cold War era and peace being a fragile state at the time... the title 'Piece of Mind' won out instead of 'Peace of mind'... 😂 On tour, the band would have a giant 'Eddie' walk out on stage during Iron Maiden's set... For the 1983 'World Piece' tour, they had 'Eddie' in a straightjacket and vocalist Bruce Dickinson would rip off Eddie's skull and kill the mascot. For Iron Maiden's 1984 album 'Powerslave'... 'Eddie' was resurrected as an Egyptian Pharoah and appeared as a bandaged mummy w/ a lobotomy visible on his forehead.
A great review of a great song. A lot of people, at the time, did not like this video as, because it used scenes from the film, "Charge of The Light Brigade", they complained that as a number of horses died during the film's production, Maiden should not have used the footage. Either way, good or bad, it was a great video, I have actually seen Iron Maiden eight times over the years so have a good idea of what they can do. If you get to watch the live video of "Die With Your Boots On", which was filmed in Birmingham (NEC) in 1988. I was there!!! Granted, Maiden normally do Birmingham over two successive nights, so was it the first or second night? Who knows. I've tried to spot myself in the crowd towards the front, but as a blonde kid wearing a Maiden t-shirt, I didn't stand out.
Interesting note of history. Although the Light Brigade was sent down the wrong valley and the Light Brigade lost alot of men and horses, the Heavy Brigade was sent after and managed to capture several Russian Guns. The Bronze from those guns captured are used in the making of the VC (Victoria Cross) medal, britians highest military award for bravery. The film footage in the video is from the 1936 film The charge of the Light Brigade staring Errol Flynn. Due to 25 horses being killed during the filming, new laws were put in place to protect all animals used in films and TV shows.
Actually the Light Brigade were ordered to capture some Turkish guns which the Russians were making off with unfortunately the general who gave the order Lord Cardigan was at the top of a hill and the Light Brigade was in the Valley could only see the Russian guns which were prepared to Fire. The commanding officers Lords Raglan and Lucan instead of querying the orders, just gave the order to charge the Russian guns which lead to the inevitable slaughter. Incidentally we got the name of 3 pieces of clothing from this, the Cardigan, the Raglan Sleeve and the Balaclava, as it took place at the Battle of Balaclava .
@stevored1989 what's sad about the reaction of the Dublin crowd is that 2 of the Regiments at the charge (the 4th and 8th Hussars) were Irish Regiments.
Hi Maggie, piece is intending to such as a piece of cake and it’s spelt right in UK English. Bruce has a high timbre naturally in his voice. I think you should look at videos of him singing live because he’s very great at storytelling. Bruce is a natural tenor Bruce when he speaks is quite bright sounding. Bruce still has a high timbre in his voice today despite having throat cancer in 2014. Bruce could never disrespect the military of the UK because he is a honorary group captain of the Royal Air Force, which he holds a pilots license and able to fly by 747 he is not rich enough to own one, but Bruce is a pilot by trade and flys band around when they on tour
No. 'Piece of Mind' is the deliberate spelling of the album simultaneously implying 'give 'em a piece of my mind' and also a lobotomy. It is a pun don't ya know :D
Maggie, have you never had a piece of gum, a piece of pizza, a piece of paper, or a piece of music? Piece is spelled correctly, just a different meaning than peace.
You should react to a band that covers this song. Liliac a family band of kids and teenagers, it could be the best cover of this song by anyone ever. You really owe it to yourself to check it out and thank me later. Also Bruce Dickenson the singer for Iron Maiden has a very operatic type voice and it shows throughout the catalog of Maidens music. Thanks for reacting to this Maiden classic. PLEASE check out Liliacs cover it will blow you away I promise.

This song is musically, lyrically, and thematically perfect. It begins at a run, gallops to the end, and stops dead.

Right, the sleeve of the album has them all sitting down to munch on a human brain
That's what I came here to say (LOL). It makes perfect sense when you see that picture@@gw2955
It's not even a spelling mistake!🙆♂️
"Peace". = a state of non-violencebetween two or more parties..
"Piece". = a sub particle of the whole.
"Peace of mind". = a phrase used to describe, fair!yself-evidently, a serene state of being, where no real conflict is demanding one's attention to resolve.

Iron Maiden was all about dueling guitars, harmonies and operatic vocals.
The energy is just insane on this one. The drummer needs so much love for this and Run to the hills. It seriously sounds like horses galloping

I grow up and my first band i was falling in love with was "Iron Maiden"
"give you a piece of my mind" is the wordplay for the album title.
As in, having strong opinions and vocalizing them (often in an impolite manner)
Piece of mind refers to an actual removed part of the brain like a forced lobotomy
Apparently Steve Harris was inspired by the Storm Sequence from the William Tell overture by Rossini, for the music!
I'd have thought it would have been the last movement of the William Tell overture, the one that's better known as "The Lone Ranger theme"

Granted, Maiden normally do Birmingham over two successive nights, so was it the first or second night? Who knows. I've tried to spot myself in the crowd towards the front, but as a blonde kid wearing a Maiden t-shirt, I didn't stand out.
Guys, shall we tell her about Will Ramos and Lorna Shore yet?
The vocal one-take of Through the Hellfire on Will's channel is amazing.
@stevored1989 what's sad about the reaction of the Dublin crowd is that 2 of the Regiments at the charge (the 4th and 8th Hussars) were Irish Regiments.
power metal gives you that inch what you need to blow mountain etc.
Theres no way americans would spell it peace of cake. She wws just confused.
Hi Maggie :)
Great reaction as usual :)
Suggestion: Kung of Pain by Loudness. I don't recall ever seeing a Loudness video on your channel. It's would be a giant bucket of awesomosity :)
Nod nod Take a Bow!
