As a theatre major, raked stages are a rarity in America because they were (understandably) a little hard to adjust for performers, esp because although a 45-degree angle is the most common, it's not something that is standardized. It can also look weird because it uses forced perspective to give everyone in the theater the same/similar view, so a lot of actors appeared to be limping when crossing the stage. Basically, as humans going to see performances, we went from raked seating and flat stage (think: greek amphitheaters like Epidaurus) to flat seating and raked stage (like in the tiktok) back to raked seating and flat stage (like a movie theater). Fun fact: raked stages are where we get the terms "upstage" and "downstage" from!
Yeah and the reason why the rakes still exist is mainly because the old theatres want to keep it the same as it historically was, which I really adore, keeping the history. But yeah they were mainly from Middle Ages so thus mainly in historic European theatres.
The original Met Opera House had a raked stage. Fun story, my mom was pregnant with me, singing Boris Goudonof at the old Met with Martti Talvela singing the title role. He was a method actor, and when my mother came to beg for food for the starving serfs at his feet, he flung her away from himself, as opposed to recoiling and letting the guards (already crossing to come get her) take her away. Mom, 8 months pregnant, goes rolling down the raked stage, and is grabbed, by her costume, mere inches from the drop into the orchestra pit. Management was waiting for her in the wings when she got offstage to tell her that her maternity leave started NOW!
@@wuzadivaOh, my gosh! This just added a new fear! I love singing and have trained so hard. It would be my DREAM to perform at the Met. However, I also want babies. How do people not think!? She was pregnant! Even if it's not a raked stage anymore, that image is now stuck in my head!

@@_SpreadingLove_ I have chronic knee issues after an injury when I was 11, so doing barre warmups has really helped a lot outside of physical therapy.

Yay! Thank you so much! Hearing you say I was gorgeous made me so happy! (2:22) I actually do this for a job though so I wear new shoes on the street! I try not to wear new shoes when it’s raining though 😅
Josephine, this time I brought my 7 year old son over and had him watch your reaction to the "dancer with strong feet" when she had her toes bent over and was walking on the knuckles. He saw your reaction of "No! Why would you do that! Don't do that!" Then he grinned at me and said "I'm better at it than she is" and proceeded to RUN across the floor on his toe knuckles and giggle... I'm doomed with this forever!
Oh man it is like when my six year old was working on a queen of the night recording project. So that is a crazy high soprano part. I told her not to put the little arrow in the red zone and cause ear pain to mommy🤣
Yeah same! Josephine's videos were recommended to me, no idea why...but I proceeded to watch all her "react" videos and then started watching her pointe shoe fittings and everything else. As a non-ballerina, non-dancer I have so much pointe knowledge with nothing to do with it except bug my husband and tell him interesting things I learned!
I binged all your tick-tock videos (and then some...😅). How are you so wholesome??? 😭❤️ Also, I never did any ballet but now all of the ads I see are for pointe shoes. 🤣 You're the best, can't wait for the next one. 🤩
Rake stages are why the terms are upstage and downstage. Because you are physically going down the stage when coming to the front and going up the stage when going to the back.
I’ve been watching your channel for months, and I finally got a pointe shoe sponsored ad on my social media. So shoutout to Bloch shoes for knowing their audience.
I directed an operetta once where the first weekend was on a flat stage and the second weekend was on a raked stage. I knew the set would have to be adjusted, but nothing really prepares you until you get in the house.
I remember one of the 1st instructions my ballet teacher gave the class, "tuck your butt in." For life of me I seriously thought she lost her marbles. I only took classes for about 2yrs. The world of dance isn't for me. But walked away with a deep appreciation for it.
Have you ever had a dancer come in for a fitting and break the shoe just from trying it on? Because all these stories of people breaking their shoes in 30 mins and being so soft just after buying them, I'd love to know does it ever happen in a fitting? 😂
Usually in fittings they have you step up onto pointe instead of rolling through so you don’t break the shoes. It’s the action of rolling through and articulating through your feet that molds/breaks the shoe.
Also, dancers pretty much take all their aggression out on their shoes before they even wear them the first time so they CAN wear them and that's another big reason they won't last as long. 😅
the granny's in 5:50 reminded me when I went to my sisters rescietel (I have no clue how to type that word) there this granny's dancing Flamenco and they were adorable! but they also did so good and smoothly >w
8:40 one of my friends in my drama class used to ballet and when she was bored she would walk around like this and i would nearly crying every single time 😭 😭
At a dance studio I used to work at, every year one of the other instructors, who is also a photographer, took photos of the older students outside. The photos were always gorgeous! One year, I was out for several months because of a surgery and my boss sent me one of the photos, taken while I was out, signed by my advanced pointe students as a get well card. It was very sweet! Except...the dancer in the center was in shoes SO DEAD the poor girl's feet were practically folded in half. XD I'm not exactly sure who let that poor girl wear those things, (or why she herself thought it was okay? We talked all the time about shoe safety). I still have the photo becasue I love my students and it really was a sweet sentiment. But it makes me wince every time I look at it!
I literally had just finished explaining to my husband how you got popular because of the cup videos and then the cups arrived! (≧∇≦) Could not have timed that better if I TRIED.
I was told that I had a similar reaction to ballet when i was a baby too, though slightly more mesmerized lol. I wanna pick up ballet so bad but there are no studios nearby that teach adults :') I'd have to go out of town.
Omg! I did an Alice in Wonderland ballet performance two years ago (Played the March Hare) and I danced to "dancing with the bear" from "finding neverland" ! I started to do coro to it😂 (the song the older ladies where dancing to)
I love how Josephine reacted to the Harry Potter one saying "I'm team slytherin" and then like 5 seconds later she said "We hat you" to the girl with the strong ankles and feet 🤣 Also, DON'T COME FOR ME, I KNOW THAT BEING MEAN IS NOT THE ONLY ASPECT FOR SLITHERINS, I just thought it was funny when I made that connection
I know that this is hella random, but I'd love Josephine to review Manon, the new Street Fighter 6 character who incorporates ballet into her moveset. Just saw a video of her fighting against Cammy and SHE CAN PIROUETTE PARRY! It's freaking cool!

i cross train with strength training! it’s helped immensely in the studio, but my trainer loves to use “‘cuz you’re a dancer” as an excuse for things 😂
Oh that clip of the really fast spinning with the drums in the back is Georgian Sword Dancing or traditional dancing I think! It's almost like ballet but it seems really intense.
Here's a question for you dancers (or Josephine). If a dancer needs two different sizes or brands of shoes to best fit their feet, does it require buying two pairs to mix and match? Or can you buy just one shoe of each brand or size?

I literally would do pirouettes en pointe in my dance sneakers and they were like… “not ready”)
I walk on my feet like the last one literally all the time 😂 sometimes I don’t realize how weird it is especially to people that don’t dance and they’ll just stare at me in disbelief 😂😂
3:44 I’m an ex competitive cheerleader and I did some dance as a kid but decided to just stick with cheer. The hair I so relate to, there have been so many times where I was about to meet with my team but there was one spot that was just in so much pain I was almost in tears and every single time it was because a bobby pin was digging in a bit too much and I’d have to get my mom to find it to take it out. And the feeling of taking off the makeup and the hair and the super tight uniform (you could see every single seem on our arms when we took them off), I always felt like I could properly breath again and my skin could relax again
Josephine : Why would you use your talent for evil?
Me: 🤣
