Waldner was a master at all areas of the game, but it seems to me, from watching videos, that the thing that set him apart more than anything was his ability to block the ball back with consistency, pace, and placement. His ability to change the pace of rallies was also unique...his blocks put such pressure on his opponents when they were slamming
Gatien se confiaba mucho de sus ataques rápidos, sin pensar de que waldner podía tener control sobre sus ataques.. creo que tambien faltaba estrategia de juego por parte gatien..por esa razón waldner casi siempre le ganaba .
Yeah 'cause Waldner had the best serves/third ball attacks against lefties ever and it's not even close. The Chinese are traditionally the strongest in those departments but they are uncomfortable against lefties. Gatien won his match against Saive due to his fast serve down the line which was ineffective against Waldner.
Waldner had the best serves against left-handers.Gatien had less problems agaisnt Liu Guoliang's serves which is crazy 'cause he faced him less frequently.

his prime was 1997
@@SimonNordlowHis prime was 1992.He was maybe a bit more clinical in 1997 but he was terrible in 1998 and started having injuries in 1999.
@@SimonNordlowIn 1997 he was clinical but past his prime.

Gatien was always clueless against Waldner's serves. He may be very glad that Saive finished him off in '93.

Waldner served and received much better against lefties which is the exact opposite to the Chinese.
