At last, someone reacts to King’s X....They’re one of my favourite bands but they never got the recognition they really deserved. They’ve been going since the mid 80’s and this track is from their second album Gretchen Goes to Nebraska which came out in 1989. Some might think it sounds a bit “grungey” with the drop D tuning but they were one of the first bands to do this. Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam cites them as inventing the grunge sound but King’s X are so much more than that. Gretchen is a great album to start getting into King’s X, it’s got some songs which they still play today like Over My Head and Summerland. They were always liked by other musicians but it seemed the public didn’t quite get them. If you want to do more songs of theirs try “It’s Love” which was a single from their third album Faith Hope Love or We Were Born to be Loved which is probably one of my favourites. Hope you get into this amazing band, there’s lots to like. Keep up the good work 👍
"Born to Be Loved" - all the tricky "stops"/transitions at the end, and the 3 part harmonies and point/counterpoint vocals. Its amazing that Paul Schaffers band from Letterman used to play it between commercial breaks! One of my all time faves :D.
Gretchen goes to Nebraska is a game changer . Every song is great on this album. Dug Ty and Jerry are a phenomenal combination and their voices all go well together. 1989 I bought this cassette at the age of 14.30 years later I still have the cassette
@@mvunit3 "Black the Sky" is another good one. I've been a fan of King's X since 1988. Made my own King's X playlist: th-cam.com/video/whJzbh_Ri0E/w-d-xo.html
Nice one, Jim! King's X is my favorite band. I've been loving these guys for almost 30 years now. This song is about Giordano Bruno and his trial by the Catholic church and them burning him alive for the heresy of suggesting the earth was not flat but spherical. King's X has so many different musical flavors from song to song. Some are spacey and psychedelic (Pleiades), others chunk and chug (Dogman), some are shredders (Moanjam), and some odd Beatle-esque ditties (The Difference-In the Garden of St Anne's on the Hill). They've got funk (Jenna), the blues (Flies and Blue Skies), soul (A Little Bit of Soul) and all other genres that are particular to King's X. For your next choice, I put forth "We Were Born to Be Loved", "Talk to You" or "It's Love". Enjoy! Peace...
This is one of my 3 favourite songs off my favourite King's X album Gretchen goes to Nebraska, the other 2 being Over My Head and Summerland. This is one of their more Beatlesque songs, which is why the guitarist Ty Tabor sings lead, but he is not their lead singer (although he sings lead on about 1/3 of their songs, except on Dogman, he sadly doesn't sing any). Their lead singer is Doug Pinnick, who you hear sing the line gather at the pole. Lyrically they can be quite deep, especially on their earlier albums, they are quoted as saying they want there songs to be like parables, and many are. If you want shredding/Ty just jamming, listen to Moanjam off Faith Hope Love, their best selling album. It's funny you mentioned Deep Purple, apparently he was asked to be their vocalist at one time, but turned them down because of King's X. King's X has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them in 1990, I have seen them live at least 10 times, probably more. They are one of the best bands that few people have heard of, criminally underrated.
Groove, alien, powerful, no matter how you define it...King's X is something that takes you for ride!!! A memory that etches it self to your mind and soul and you never are the same again!!!
The song that started it all! A song about the heavens and this song is heavenly. Although Jerry's drum groove is this side of John Bonham filthy. Amazing piece of music from an amazing disk.
Thanks for checking out King'sX. I've enjoyed their music for well over 30 years.Tabortone is no real mystery. He runs a Strat style guitar through a Marshall amp. It's all in his hands. How he plays the instrument is what makes his sound so unique and desirable. He's just that good.Rock on!
The name is reflective of how when a king sent a message he would place his "x" on the message, and at this time they were considered a band of faith. They had the king's x to send the message.

My favourite band Jim! So glad you enjoyed it! The band name is apparently from an American children's game similar to Tag and Hide and Seek (according to band member's interviews in the past). The guitarist called Ty Tabor is very highly thought of by a lot of other rock guitarists and so is the whole band really amongst fellow musicians but they just never got the public popularity unfortunately. 15 studio albums and all 3 of them have had solo albums and side projects along the way and they're actually in the studio working on the next album!
The first time I heard these guys was when i lived on Summerland ave. in San Pedro. I listened to "Summerland" over and over in my head for a couple years.
listen to "Summerland", same album, it is perhaps the most perfect song in rock, taut writing, amazing vocals, perfect solo, amazing riff... learn it, love it...
I have a soft spot for Kings X....Doug is a fine bassist (8 String!!!)and the band is solid. First time I heard Jolly, I thought of Kings X, because they are both so melody driven, where so many other prog and prog rock bands get bogged down with trying to be clever..... TwinRavens recommendation.... Gretchen Goes To Kansas( which this is from) Excellent album.
12 string bass actually. Hamer made him some custom ones as Doug was inspired by Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick. The album "Faith Hope Love" was the first of theris to feature that monster of an instrument.
@@JimNewstead it's just like a 12 string guitar, with each string having an octave ( 8 String) or two identically tuned octave Strings(12 string)....it's a real challenge to play .
