  • What I did to fix my issue when I got a check engine light with a P0301 code indicating a misfire in cylinder 1 with severe engine knocking.
    For the last 4-5 months my car has been blowing mostly warm air, even on cold days and my car temp set to 65 degrees. To get any cold air at all I would have to turn on the AC. After this maintenance the cold air has returned and everything is back to normal.
    I used the following videos from NutzAboutBoltz as a guide:
    Sparkplug replacement:

    EGR maintenance:

    That Knocking sound with the Misfire P301, P302...Etc.... is do to a Head gasket, I saw many of this easy fixes on the Prius. I have a 2010 Prius with many miles and saw all this videos and ideas on how to fix the knocking and they are only temporary fixes from taking out the O ring on the reservoir to cleaning the EGR, Cleaning the manifold, and putting on new Spark plugs and Ignition coils. The best thing to do is to change the head gasket before you mess up your valves and engine. The best way you can tell is if your coolant is going down fast and check your oil. If the oil is cloudy you know something is wrong. I fixed my Head gasket and the problem is solved, it is a very large job but very doable. It took me 3 days and about $500.00 in parts.I hope this help many people that love their Prius like I do. Prius Chat helps a lot.

      @@Noezen03 From what I remember I put some oil on the rebuilt Heads after I torqued them if you go to the Prius chat they give you the specs and you could get the torque wrench at Oreilly's they loan it to you so you won't buy it(only used it once) for free of course you leave it a deposit but it is reimbursed. I think the hardest part was lining up the time but it has the arrows to guide you and they don't give you the gasket for the side so you have to use that silicone sealant on the side. You will see it and know what I'm talking about. Good luck and I'm glad saves you a lot of money. just be patient.

    If you have the same issue, watch your coolant level. If the coolant level drops even after tipping off and you have no confirmed leaks to the outside, it is almost certain that the head gasket is going to fail in a few thousand miles and is leaking coolant into the cylinder(s) causing the misfire codes.

    Great video! Highly recommend installing an oil catch can. This will reduce the amount of oil being recirculated back into the intake manifold and clogging EGR valve and cooler. Every time I change the oil in my Prius (every 5k miles), there is at least 3-4 tablespoons of oil/fuel caught in the oil catch can. Might want to also change your spark plugs when doing this. Some of my plugs were fouled due to the excess oil being sucked back into the intake manifold and into the intake runners. Oil catch can will reduce that from happening too.

    There is moisture or blow by oil getting into that cylinder , you need to check thatcylinder or have a compression check on all that cylinders. So that is the first thing to check. One of the things that have helped is cleaning out the egr pipe then adding a filtered oil catch can between the PCv valve and the intake manifold. You should clean out your intake manifold it probably has a lot of oil in it. I have high miles and changed out the head gasket and added a filtered oil catch can , I use 3 quarts of 0w20 and between oil changes I use lucus oil stabilizer , that helps with worn piston rings and oil consumption. The car no longer shakes during cold startup , no coolant loss. You can get a cheap iPhone boroscope to look into a suspected cylinder before you start up in the morning and look to see if it’s oil on the piston or coolant. Sometimes people would unpressurized the coolant system by slightly losing up the cap and selling a Prius with a bad head gasket. It will have min coolant loss and you wouldn’t notice until you drive on a hot summer day. You won’t suspect it in the cooler weather. Hope this helps somebody. My car had 223000 miles when Cylinder 2 was misfiring then I notice loss in coolant and the coolant cap was never tight or had the o ring missing. These Prius are known for burning oil because of the pcv design causing engines to start to blow head gasket and fail. There is a lot of info on priusprime forum about the 3rd gen Prius and adding a filtered oil catch can , just google it.

      How does a pad PVC system cause blown head gaskets?
      Thanks...

    • @tommycortez_
      @tommycortez_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TIM Flugaur-Leavitt The pcv valve is letting blow by gasses into the intake manifold , which is normal , but when you have worn down parts , like piston rings , this is letting more oil in your intake manifold , past the pcv valve and just sitting in your intake manifold, when you start the engine it will suck in this oil stuck in your intake manifold and shake the engine so hard that I believe hurts the head gasket or wears it down. I haven’t had a hard knocking start in the winter or summer since I installed a filtered oil catch can, I got the information from Priuschat forum. Here’s a link, in my opinion I probably need new piston rings , I have not done a compression test , but I now burn a quart of oil every 600 miles.

    Let me get this straight...there's an EGR valve, and EGR cooler, and an EGR pipe? And from comments, it sounds like perhaps just cleaning the EGR valve may fix the problem? (We already had the intake replaced...that did not fix the problem...the mechanic said the cooler and valve/whatever were NOT dirty...hard to believe, but I believed him figuring he actually laid eyes on them...but maybe he didn't.) Thanks...

    • @realrandomcarstuff
      @realrandomcarstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Salopek those three pieces make up the EGR system. U can only see if the pipe is dirty easily. The other two u need to dismantle to see for yourself. I don’t know how many miles u have but that cooler and valve will totally clog up with carbon if it’s not cleaned

    • @Bill-NM
      @Bill-NM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@realrandomcarstuff 225k miles...the problem just started a few days ago. We bought the car with 99k miles 5 years ago...I doubt the EGR system was ever cleaned, but I can't be sure. The local garage, who I trust, after reading the code (cylinder 1 misfire, multiple cylinder misfire) replaced the spark plugs (which they said were in very bad condition), and when that didn't fix it, replaced the intake manifold as per Toyota guidlines (but I think that's about cold morning condensation and water in the system)...so we are about $1300 in at this point. I had mentioned to them that I read about carbon build up, the EGR clogging issues, etc, and they said they looked and they were clean. ? So I wonder if they really ever ACTUALLY looked? I have a call into them now...when they call back, I'll dig deeper as to whether they actually LOOKED at the pipe, and request they tear it all apart again to do the cleaning, as I imagine with 225k miles, there is simply no way that system isn't clogged...do you agree? Thanks for your help.

    • @realrandomcarstuff
      @realrandomcarstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Salopek you should not spend any more money on it replacing things until you know for sure. The first thing they should test for is the head gasket and see if it’s blown. If it’s still intact then you should clean the EGR, replace the water pump and coolant. It could be you have coolant leaking into cylinder 1. You can watch my K-Seal video and see if that solves your problem. If it does then your head gasket is done and you should just get rid of the car. The amount of repairs on a car this old is not worth it at this point.

      @@realrandomcarstuff On our first visit to the shop, about 2-3 weeks ago, I asked them specifically to check for head gasket issues, and they said "absolutely" the head gasket is OK...that said, I don't know how they determined that. Why are you saying to replace the water pump and coolant? I have an appt for Monday where they said they will reinspect the EGR system for clogging (for free)...so we'll go with thatfor nowand see what happens. So you are saying that even with a good head gasket, that collant can be leaking into cylinders? Thanks...

    • @realrandomcarstuff
      @realrandomcarstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Salopek the head gasket replacement is $3500. It usually fails due to overheating. The water pump is electric so if it fails u usually won’t know. The water pump is $220. Cheaper to just replace it and know it’s good than to squeeze every bit of use out of it and risking your head gasket. Even if they say the head gasket is good, I would try the K-Seal and see what happens. U can do it right now and know in the next few hours if your issue is a coolant leak. But you definitely need to clean out your EGR. I have not talked to anyone who at 200k did not have a clogged cooler and valve

  • @springer-qb4dv

    It's not fuel injectors. The knocking is caused by oil pooling in cylinder number 1. where is the oil coming from? It's from pcv valve going into air intake and then cylinder number 1. This is toyota design defect and only way to resolve this issue is to install oil catch can between pcv valve and air intake.

    Toyota hybrids *really* need top tier gasoline. (Probably applies to the Mazda Miller cycle engines as well.) The Miller valve timing causes soot left over from the exhaust stroke to be regurgitated into the intake. Without the higher detergent levels in top tier gas the carbon in the intake system will cause this sort of trouble sooner or later.
    Why does the engine knock and rattle like that? I have no idea, but be aware if the engine is shut down right after the ICE starts it is normal for it to clatter frighteningly for a half minute or so when it is next started.
    Top tier gasoline brands are listed at www.toptiergas.com/licensed-brands/ - it is by far the cheapest way to deal with the fuel intake problems.
    (Nothing but Prius in the family since 2002 - no more reliable car in my experience.)

    This same knocking is happening to my 2014 with 225k on it. Knocks at start and sometimes from stopping when the engine kicks back on. Egr was SUPPOSEDLY cleaned this year at a shop. Replaced plugs and nothing besides running a little better.
    I drive is hundreds of miles a day some days and thousands a month. No other engine issues have come up. Check engine has been coming on for misfire cylinder 2 but seems to resolve itself. Any tips? Bringing to the mechanic tomorrow.

      Is your coolant level dropping? It’s probably leaking into the engine via the head gasket.

      There is no recommended hybrid transaxle fluid change interval. I have never replaced the WS transmission fluids in any of my Prius cars - the 2002 has over 200K miles on it. The transmission is essentially a planetary gearset; no clutches, no belts, no valves, no synchros, no shifting.... Change the fluid as often as you would a rear axle on an RWD vehicle - check and fill every handful of years.

      @@axmed711 hopefully you figured out the knocking. Here are some cheap and easy fixes. I assume you replaced spark plugs
      1. Use scan tool to see which cylinders are misfiring. Change coils around to see if the coils are causing it
      2. Change the PCV valve, only $5 but could be giving you issues
      3. Clean throttle body and MAF sensor
      4. If burning oil install oil catch can
      5. Check to see if the EGR is stuck open (I assume you did this already)
      6. Drink a beer or choice beverage

    Pls I seriously need your help. My location is Nigeria. There are no mechanics here who can really work on hybrid cars.
    For the past 2 months, I have been having rattling and knocking sound. With no error codes. I cleaned the whole egr systems, cleaned injectors, changed spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, cleaned PC valve, Cleaned inlet manifold, I have oil catch can installed for about 5 months now. Upon all these, the car is still rattling and making knocking sound. Especially when it's charging the HV battery.
    If I drive fast the sound disappears.
    My coolant doesn't shot, my engine oil doesn't have water in it but I noticed the oil does shot. So I can't say it's blown head gasket.
    And today this new incident happened.
    Now if I remove the 12v battery head for 5 minutes and put it back the car starts on ev only after 3 to 5 seconds then car trys to start the engine and the ready light goes off and check hybrid system light and other error lights comes on on dash board.
    Is this a sign that my engine knocked?
    Will Changing the crankshaft position sensor solve the issue?
    What exactly should I do?
    The car has 145,000 miles on it.
    The error codes it shows using toyota techstream now are P0335, P0A0F, C1259, C1310

    PLEASE HELP!!!
    I have a 2012 Prius Plug-In (now called the Prime) and you MUST put car in the "Power Mode" and you will have no problem passing cars or goin up hills. My Prius won't move much if on Regular Mode or Eco Mode; but Power Mode feels like a "normal car".
    I also drive Lyft & Uber and in 2.5 years I put 310,000 miles on my 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid... which also got me use of Carpool lane with no passengers
    I've only done 3 oil changes... one for each 100,000 miles... no other maintenance done
    Now I have Cylinder Misfire and changed Coils, Plugs, and Injectors... doesn't fix issue. So mechanic says I need to rebuild engine or new engine... seems a bit much!!!
