  • America is an American rock band formed in England in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live.
    Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for their close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on pop/soft rock stations.
    The band came together shortly after the members' graduation from high school, and a record deal with Warner Bros. Records followed. Their debut 1971 album, America, included the transatlantic hits "A Horse with No Name" and "I Need You"; Homecoming (1972) included the single "Ventura Highway"; and Hat Trick (1973), a modest success on the charts which fared poorly in sales, included one minor hit song "Muskrat Love". 1974's Holiday featured the hits "Tin Man" and "Lonely People"; and 1975's Hearts generated the number one single "Sister Golden Hair" alongside "Daisy Jane." History: America's Greatest Hits, a compilation of hit singles, was released the same year and was certified multi-platinum in the United States and Australia. Peek left the group in 1977, and their commercial fortunes declined, despite a brief return to the top in 1982 with the single "You Can Do Magic".
    The group continues to record material and tour with regularity. Their 2007 album Here & Now was a collaboration with a new generation of musicians who credited the band as an influence. America won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and were nominated for Best Pop Vocal Group at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards in 1973. The group has been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

      you are kidding me. Not yet? Maybe because paying for being in the Hall of Fame is not what America is about. To me they are like Oxygen. And the air I breathe is so generous it does not require to be famous. Just Essential.

      I wouldn't consider them underrated -- more like like typical of '70s bands. They definitely had some great songs, had some smash hits, & actually released more albums during the decade than The Eagles did -- But the Eagles had more solid albums, had bigger (& more) hits, toured a lot more, & you felt like you knew the guys....Most music fans could name every member of The Eagles past & present, but many still couldn't name the 3 guys in America

    America was a band of three army brats who’s parents were stationed in England, in the late ‘60’s. They were signed by Apple Records and produced by George Martin. So yeah, Ventura Highway has always been one of my favorite songs of all time. In his song, the conversation with “Joe” was a family friend at the time when they lived in the Midwest and his father was being deployed to Southern California. He was trying to talk joe into going with them and moving out to California. Joe, being hit by “purple rain,” was a euphemism for depression or the blues. Most of the lyrics in the song were based on actually events of Dewey’s childhood.

    • @JRoss707
      @JRoss707 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@alanoneill3065 yeah it’s a localized name for the old California state Rout 1, or the coastal Highway. Where it passes through the L.A., Ventura area it’s referred as the Ventura Highway. This highway has largely become obsolete since they put in the Interstate 101 freeway, a faster safer alternative. The Ventura is the scenic route. I had thought I was responding to the Ventura Highway clip, not the Oz clip, my mistake…

    A lot of comments on how this is the best music compared to today. Many making such comments grew up with this music--as did I, so there is the nostalgia factor, I realize. But setting that aside, is it just me or was there more diversity in the 60's and 70's? I'm 70, and it seems like music all sounds alike now. Back then, from the Doors, to Chicago, Santana--all with their own unique sound.
