  • If you’re looking to start doing more street photography, you might be a little disheartened to see so many people using super expensive, 5 figure+ set ups to produce their images.
But if you’re looking to start out in street photography, can you do it with a more affordable set up?
In this video, I demonstrate how you can get some truly special images, even with an entry level camera.

My son upgraded his camera and gifted his old one to me. It’s a Canon Rebel T2i, (that he originally bought brand new) and he bought me a used Canon EFS 18-135mm for my birthday in August, and then a used EF 50mm f/1.8 STM for Christmas.
I have been having a lot of fun using them on photowalks in Baltimore and Annapolis, both nearby for me. I’ve been using the 50mm for them. My camera before that was an Olympus EPL1 micro 4/3 which I really had fun with, and I still have it. I like that the T2i has an eyepiece, which I used for decades on my Pentax K-1000 that I bought new in 1980.
I’m 71 and have neurological tremors, so holding the T2i against my face when I shoot really helps with the camera shake.
I love photography, and I am having so much fun! Thank you for your insights. I’m a happy a grateful subscriber. Blessings abounding to you, and tank you for the hard work you do on our behalf.

Another advantage of using a more affordable setup is that you are less worried about being mugged for your equipment, I tend to use my little Sony RX100 mkiii (great little camera) or Canon M5 when out in a town, I wouldn't be comfortable using more expensive gear in that situation 😞

Your comment about walking around with a heavy lense is so funny. I was downtown with a rented EF 70-200 2.8 a week ago and man, after 3 hours, my arm was dead tired.

Hi Joshua. My friend lent me his spare Nikon D40X recently and said "you need to start shooting with a camera again, mate" (I had sold my film cameras many moons ago). He was right and it was good to be going around with a camera again. So, I bought a Nikon D300S (shutter count 90,000) and the 18-55mm GII VR for £170.00 including shipping, a sling bag from K&F was £40.00. Plus, SD cards and CF cards for the two card slots, and a wrist strap that came to £45.00. A clean, fifteen year old APSC 12 megapixel camera in great condition, including seals and rubber grips. The overall total was £255.00. A bargain in the current economic climate The camera is heavy but I have the sling bag in the front and rest the camera in/on it. You are right that entry level/older cameras having limitations, however, its about finding out what they are and shooting with those in mind. I have been taking pictures for a weeks and posted fourteen pictures onto a new Flickr page, (its gonna be quiet over there, ha,ha,ha) for a visual reference. Cameras are a great conduit for having conversations with people while out taking pictures its just about having a friendly approach and those chats lead onto other things. I consider the camera equipment I have just got to be an investment in creativity and life. Thank you for raising the topics in this video and enjoy the rest of your day, cheers.

I started my photography a little over a year ago with a Canon EOS Rebel T100 and a non-stabilized 18-55 kit lens. I still have the lens but I've upgraded the camera to a Canon T6i, because it has a fully articulated view screen and a diopter wheel. The diopter wheel because I wear glasses, and the articulated view screen because I'm handicapped and couldn't take low angle shots till now. So yes, I very much appreciate budget equipment.

Simply walking around with a lightweight set up and enjoying the process of simply taking photos is what I enjoy. I’ve scaled down my set up and sold my big nice lenses as I don’t enjoy carrying all the gear. I had a old , small Panasonic micro four thirds and used that more ! Now using a small Fujifilm camera and a couple of primes or even my phone is perfect for me. Another great video Joshua 👍

Hi Joshua. You are asking for what we are interested in your future video. I have a topic :) Me personally struggling all the time with choosing which foto i worth to keep when i come home from taking pictures. My question is. When you do, lets say a hundred photos on a day and come home and look at them in your computer. HOW do you choose which photos are worth to keep and work on them. What exactly are you doing. I always come home, have 100+ pictures taken and look at them and they look boring and i cant decide which one i take to edit. :) That would be a very very interesting one for me :) Thanks

I was shooting a Nikon D7000 but after I bought a D700 in December the D7000 stays in the case. It's not light, around 1 kg for the body alone but when paired with a 50mm or 24mm AF-D lens, it's manageable. I don't have a problem with its 12.8 MP sensor. I'm happy with the colors and pleasant way it renders noise. Old Cameras and glass rock!

I always buy used, but I'm wondering if you're going to move to mirrorless any time soon? Now that Canon has one at the price point you usually talk about, it seems like the right time.

  • @HR-wd6cw

I'd say really for street photography, a 50mm (which most can be found cheap, especailly used) or a 35mm, and any camera should work. You don't need the most high-end camera or the highest-res camera, so you could easily do street for $500 or less. It's one of the few genres (that and perhaps landscape) that don't require the most expensive gear (although for landscape, having decent lenses -- as with any genre -- is helpful, and can add to the cost, but with street photography especially, its more about capturing a moment or a feeling than an overall scene where you perhaps what every detail, every ounce of sharpness you can get, which is sometimes needed for some scenes in landscape photography).
I mean my current street camera is an old Panasonic GF1 that I paid $60 for, and a used 25 1.7 lens (which is like a 50mm 3.5) which I paid about $100 for, so $160 got a semi decent street photography kit (10MP is a bit low, but still plenty for images displayed on-screen and reasonable sized prints up to 8x10). I actually prefer to use cheaper cameras for street photography because you are more subjected to possible things to happen, like theft or damage (more so than say doing general travel photography or landscape photography).

Great video to demonstrate how you can do amazing things using more affordable gear, I´m not saying buying expensive gear is wrong but people have different types of budgets. Personally I would like to see a tutorial explaining all the camera settings that you are using for each scenario, because the ISO is not the same, the aperture, etc and how to guess which setting is used for each scenario as a general rule.

    • @bfs5113
      @bfs5113 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is fairly easy. Use a fix ISO or auto ISO to eliminate it from the equation first. Then ask the question, is freeze the action important? If yes, then shutter priority or use the fast shutter speed as needed and vary the aperture to ensure everything that matter is in focus. Thus, fast lens aperture's DOF may not be adequate, then increase the ISO to stop down the lens.
If speed isn't that important, such as landscape & portrait, then it is aperture priority. Set the necessary aperture to include everything that matters within the DOF and vary the shutter speed (and change the ISO to get the shutter speed equals or faster than 1/focal length without IBIS).
As well, manual means which control is fixed & set first (shutter speed for shutter priority & aperture for aperture priority). Anything else belongs to creative control.
Also, in order to know which aperture, shutter speed & ISO to use without a meter or for reference, then consult the EV chart as a guideline for the starter values. For instance, EV 15 for cloudless day and the possible shutter speed & f-stop combination are f/16 @ 1/125, f/11 @ 1/250, f/8 @ 1/500, f/5.6 @ 1/1000, f/4 @ f/2000 and f/2.8 @ f/4000s, using ISO 100. Metering (camera) a gray card, use an incident meter or palm of one's hand (if it is ~gray card) will give the incident meter reading.
Furthermore, one can shoot smarter with technology by using bracketing. 🙂

You are so right about camera gear. It's so refreshing to see a photography vlogger who is in tune with many of us. After many years and many cameras (I started with a Canon AV1 back in the day), I got a little fed up with lugging huge cameras and lenses around, so I recently bought a second hand Micro 4/3 Lumix G7 (only16mp), popped on a 12 to 32mm Lens on, so super lightweight for a trip abroad and wow, I have really started to enjoy photography again and have taken some cracking shots with it, love it. Oh, and the combination was about £300.

The 24mm F2.8 is even handier for street photography in my opinion, because it can make you look even less like a professional or an artist. You lose a lot of framing ability, but it's a good "next lens" for the person on a budget, because you're forced to physically change perspectives.

Stumbled onto your videos because my first camera ended up being an SL3 simply because it was what I won on eBay a few months ago. Not seeing a ton of people shoot on these, but I'm liking it. Was wondering if you ever used back-button AF on that camera, because I JUST figured out how to set that on the SL3 last night. You have to assign the * button to do that instead of AE Lock, and ergonomically it's uh.... not great.

I still don't know how to do street photography cause I'm kind of scared to take photos of people, they might get angry at me :<
btw is 50mm 1.3f good for street photography or should I use my kit lens instead 15~45mm 3.8f?

Practice is the only way of getting over the fear. 50mm is a great choice of lens 👍🏼

Two thoughts: First, just focus on urban landscape. Buildings, not people. If people get into the shot, bonus. Second, use a longer lens. This way, you’re not up in their faces, you’re at a comfortable distance away. You can build from there. Just two thoughts. Good luck! 👍🏻
