For a brief book with excellent background for reading the New Testament or at least the Gospels, I was impressed with the little book (just over a 150 pages or so) called Can We Trust the Gospels? by Peter Williams (PhD, University of Cambridge). 😊

In Britain when I was eleven and went to secondary school we had to have a ruler, compass, pens and pencils and a copy of the New English Bible (the complete Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament having been published in 1970) - so this was the version I grew up reading.
Often described as the Civil Servant's bible as the prose style can be a little like a civil servant giving an account. Sadly my very battered green hardback which made it through school - is no longer with me but there are some hilarious sections to me where the language doesn't work (mostly in the Hebrew scriptures).
The New Testament has an interesting translating team including John Robinson (of "Honest to God" fame and later "The Priority of John" as well as being Bishop of Woolwich) and likely is of a higher quality than others parts.

Thank you so much for your warm wishes! Wonderful book for today. Hope you and Frieda are having a warm Spring day- or is it cold and windy like it is here?

I love the New English Bible, and appreciate the reading Steve. As someone who studied religion as an undergrad and in grad school, learning about the complexities of the biblical material has never made me lose faith, although it has I think made me comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty. I managed to find this paperback and have been inspired to give the NT a complete read through again. Keep the up the good work. I must confess though... I do enjoy Plotinus' Enneads, and even take some of that gobbledygook seriously!! God help me!

I found that reading to be very affecting and a reminder of why I need to become better acquainted with the New Testament ❤️. Happy Passover!
