A true testament to Bob Dylan’s extraordinary talent for song writing, his words resonate with every generation that followed. When interpreted by the biggest bands and artists they always sound relevant and timeless. I love Dylan’s voice and his brilliant phrasing and cadence, so almost always prefer his versions. Yet I could listen to covers of Dylan very happily as well. The GnR version was from my high school years so it conjures up great memories. My three favourite Dylan covers are All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix, My Back Pages by The Byrds and Blowing In The Wind by Peter Paul and Mary. And had to come back to add To Make You Feel My Love by Adele for something more current.
Definitely agree about Dylans lyrics. It doesn't matter who listens, who covers the songs and what genre and when they cover it (the 20s, 70s or tomorrow or in 50 years time), it will still resonate. The sign of a true song-writer, to be able to resound with so many different types of people across a wide timescale without sounding dated or obvious.
Duff never gets enough credit. I think his bass sound and style are what give GnR their sound. Without Duff there's no GnR! Listen to most of their songs especially their hits, Duffs bass is front and center every time!

Anything by Guns N Roses is worth listening to, but you need to do ‘Patience’ and ‘November Rain’ next. ‘Yesterdays’, ‘You Could Be Mine’, ‘The Garden’ & ‘Civil War’ are other good ones to try.
Anything off their first album is excellent... songs that didn't get radio airplay on the first, meaning not Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, and Welcome to the Jungle... which are all outstanding... so check out "Mr. Brownstone" "Nighttrain" "You Could Be Mine" "My Michelle" and "Your Fucking Crazy"
I agree. "Haunting" is a good word for Dylan with this song. It was written as a soundtrack for a movie scene and his voice perfectly depicts the emotion.
You should listen to Dylan's version next just to see the contrast between the two. They're both great just interpret differently. Dylan's is soulful and G&R's is more gritty

Guns N' Roses' catalog of covers is deep. Since the earliest days, they've honored their rock 'n' roll heroes like Rolling Stones, Queen, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney`s Wings, both on record and in concert, and yes this song by Bob Dylan.

The Guns N' Roses version is (harder rock?) version. Both are great versions. Paul McCartney and Wings just feels more classic maybe. This would be a great suggestion for them to react to!
I agree. Eric Clapton's version is better, too. I don't get why GNR say "dow-war" for door, it seems like a pointless affectation to make it sound more "heavy".

It's all subjective, of course, but I didn't feel that G&R achieved either thing.
@@tonybennett4159 Maybe a difference between us is that I was quite young when I first heard the GnR version, and probably hadn't heard or at least taken notice of the original. So for me it was the 'original'. Plus in those days I was way more inot the GnR sort of sound than the more mellow original. It's almost so different as to be a completely different song so comparisons might not eb the way to go.
@@dopiaza2006 I think you're right. The first time we hear a song is the version that is most likely to imprint itself in our minds. There are some songs that don't always go that way, however, as I love Leonard Cohen originals but I also love covers by Jennifer Warnes, Judy Collins, KD Lang and many others. It obviously also has to do with the lyrics in those cases, as Cohen's words are important to me, so I must be able to hear them clearly and not have them garbled.

It was due to Guns n Roses that I started to listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, they always quoted Southern Rock as a major influence. Another vote for Patience as the next of their songs you should check out.

There is a reason why they were the biggest band in the world at one time. It was from songs like this and Axl voice it all tied in together and just had the right sound they could go soft or hard at a flick of switch. I still love G&R to this day.
GnR’s first album blew up out of the gate and they went from opening act to headliner almost instantly. Bass=Duff McKagan, who is the man keeping that rhythm in the pocket. The “dun nunt” pausing “dun nunt “ you liked so much was the bassist followed by a run of bass notes. Relisten for the bass and Duff will blow your mind. After the 80s of being ripped off of his royalties by the record companies, Duff went back to school and took finance courses so he wouldn’t be taken advantage of again when he helped form Velvet Revolver. Steven Adler is the drummer and the one Sabastian Bach wrote and sang about in the Skid Row song Wasted Time because Steven was so hooked on heroin. Izzy Stradlin is the rhythm guitarist and the first to leave the band on his own after Steven was fired and replaced by Matt Sorum, formerly of The Cult. You know Slash and Axel. Axel has one of the broadest ranges in his voice in all of rock. It’s why they tune their instruments down a 1/2 step to flats (Eb-Ab-Db-Gb). Izzy Stradin is the voice you hear. He plays Rhythm guitar and doesn't get enough credit. Overshadowed by Axl and Slash. If you're gonna be overshadowed, I guess that's a pretty good tandem to be overshadowed by, but he is very talented. Guns and Roses was the last great Rock Band in my opinion. There has been good ones since then but they belong with the greats.
Yeah, most people know Axl and Slash but Izzy and Duff were also a big part of their sound, wrote a lot of the music and sang backing and even lead vocals in many songs.

I said there has been plenty of good bands since G and R including some bands that I love like the black crows and Beth and Joe. I classify G and R as the last Great rock band because I think they are the last band that had the entire package. very talented musicians, great vocals, stage presence, put on an epic show, swagger, great song writing, good lyrics, variety of sounds in their songs, just the whole thing. Tool along with many other bands are talented or some even extraordinary talented and have some of these elements but I haven't seen anyone with the entire package in a very long time. at least to me and what I like. Everyone loves different things in their music and their bands.
They do a good live version of this and go off into a reggae break after the second solo. Axl Rose is a great front man, up there in the top few. Not as good as Freddie though.

A famous voice coach who worked with all the big name stars has said that out of all of them, Axl's voice was the most impressive, he could do so much with it. That's saying a lot from someone who worked with the best
When GnR were on top they were HUGE, pretty much dwarfed those other bands you listed except for Led Zeppelin. Im pretty sure they still have the highest selling debut album in the US with Appetite for Destruction.
Several years ago I was driving through Arizona, listening to a local rock station morning show. It was one of those crazy morning zoo comedy shows, and they had slash on to interview. They thought it would be really funny to have slash play knocking on heavens door with a guy that plays the accordion, problem was there was nothing funny about it because it sounded amazing.
Another good GnR song to check out is "Civil War" it was off of one of their Use Your Illuson albums (they realsed 2 seperate albums at the same time and simply titled them Use Your Illusion 1 & 2) I was partial to "Mr. Brownstone" off of their first album, and "Patience" was a good, predominantly acoustic song off of their GnR Lies Lies Lies album

I really enjoy this version. Axel’s voice is amazing. My favorite version is by Warren Zevon on his final album soon before he passed. It makes me cry every time I hear it since he was “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”. Bob Dylan’s original version is truly fantastic, too.
The deep voice is still Axel Rose. There are parts of the song where the vocals are double and triple tracked to layer his voice on top of itself several times in different notes to create a chordal harmony, or line.

Bob Dylan originally did this, but personally I much prefer this one!! Axl has an incredible voice range that isn't often talked about. That's probably what you heard when asking about the voice you didn't recognize
GnR has such an amazing sound. "Patience" and "Welcome to the Jungle" are two that you will definitely love, and are on opposite ends of the spectrum of what GnR does. Also, would recommend that Jay introduce Amber to "November Rain" since she wasn't on the channel yet when you reacted to that song. Duff McKeggan originally only knew how to play guitar before joining GNR. but with Slash and Izzy Stratlin on lead and rythm guitar, Duff forced himself to learn bass. also a side note about Duff, he did a solo album, but it never really took off. but the man can sing too. in the Skid Row song, Wasted Time, they were singing about GNR drummer Steven Adler and his drug addiction. off drugs, Steven was a hell of a drummer. Izzy Stratlin and Axle had a falling out due to Axle's drug use and prima-donna attitude towards getting on stage. Izzy eventually left the band under bad terms. at concerts, you'd always see signs reading "Where's Izzy?" GNR has 4...arguably 5 ...albums that are full fire from start to finish. you would have months of tracks to listen too if you only included 1 GNR per day of uploads ...just saying lol

Duff never gets enough credit. I think his bass sound and style are what give GnR their sound. Without Duff there's no GnR! Listen to most of their songs especially their hits, Duffs bass is front and center every time!

Anything by Guns N Roses is worth listening to, but you need to do ‘Patience’ and ‘November Rain’ next. ‘Yesterdays’, ‘You Could Be Mine’, ‘The Garden’ & ‘Civil War’ are other good ones to try.

It's all subjective, of course, but I didn't feel that G&R achieved either thing.
@@tonybennett4159 Maybe a difference between us is that I was quite young when I first heard the GnR version, and probably hadn't heard or at least taken notice of the original. So for me it was the 'original'. Plus in those days I was way more inot the GnR sort of sound than the more mellow original. It's almost so different as to be a completely different song so comparisons might not eb the way to go.
@@dopiaza2006 I think you're right. The first time we hear a song is the version that is most likely to imprint itself in our minds. There are some songs that don't always go that way, however, as I love Leonard Cohen originals but I also love covers by Jennifer Warnes, Judy Collins, KD Lang and many others. It obviously also has to do with the lyrics in those cases, as Cohen's words are important to me, so I must be able to hear them clearly and not have them garbled.

It was due to Guns n Roses that I started to listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, they always quoted Southern Rock as a major influence. Another vote for Patience as the next of their songs you should check out.

A few other great Guns N' Roses songs that I think you'll both like:
- DON'T CRY: Similar vibe to "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and with a big, epic video and, of course, a big, epic Slash solo.
- WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE: A straight rocker that was the first song most of us heard from Gun N' Roses back in the day. This was their breakthrough song.
- YOU COULD BE MINE: Straight-up banger. Period. If this song doesn't get you hype and end up on your workout playlist, you don't have a heartbeat.
- CIVIL WAR: A great Gn'R song that is sadly even more relevant today than when they wrote it. Axl spitting straight facts.
- LIVE AND LET DIE: Another cover song, this is Gn'R doing a Paul McCartney song (from his band after the Beatles (Wings)).
BTW, the Rolling Stones were a big influence on Guns 'N' Roses, so that southern rock/blues rock element you're picking up on in G'n'R is definitely there. There are also elements of AC/DC, Aerosmith, the Faces (Rod Stewart's old band), punk bands like The Damned, etc. It creates a a really cool mix that results in that G'N'R sound.
As for the members of the band (since you asked), there have been A LOT of them over the years but the classic line-up from their first, breakthrough album (Appetite For Destruction) is:
- W. AXL ROSE: Lead and backing vocals, piano. He had a rough childhood, grew up singing in church, and lists Queen as his favorite band and Freddie Mercury as his favorite singer though he was also influenced by Elton John, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Michael Monroe of the band Hanoi Rocks.
- SLASH: Lead guitarist. Slash is half black, half British and his mother was a fashion designer who worked with David Bowie and Janis Joplin. He says his biggest influence was Jeff Beck but he was also influenced a lot by the Rolling Stones, Cream, and Led Zeppelin.
- DUFF MCKAGAN: Bassist, backing vocals, and occasional lead vocals. He learned to play bass by playing along with Prince's 1999 album and the Damaged album from hardcore punk band Black Flag. Duff says he fashioned himself after the bassist from The Clash and the bassist from post-punk band Magazine. In his fashion sense, I also see some influence from Sid Vicious (infamous bassist from the Sex Pistols).
- IZZY STRADLIN: Rhythm guitarist and writer or co-writer of most of Gn'R's songs. Izzy was one of Axl's childhood friends. His early influences were Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, and Led Zeppelin though he says his biggest influence was his grandmother who played drums in a swing jazz band. You can definitely detect some Rolling Stones and The Faces (Rod Stewart's old band) influence in his style as well. Fun/Sad Fact: Izzy Stradlin is the only member of Guns N' Roses with a high school diploma. He graduated with a D average.
- STEVEN ADLER: Drums. Steven Adler was a childhood friend of Slash. They met when Adler had a skateboard accident and Slash stopped to help him. Adler lists his biggest influences as the Sex Pistols, Kiss, and Roger Taylor from Queen. He was fired from Gn'R multiple times over his drug addiction and resulting flakiness and was eventually replaced by Matt Sorum (from a band called The Cult) for Gn'R's Use Your Illusion albums. Adler ended up on VH1's Celebrity Rehab, Sober House, and, last I heard, has quit music after his concerts with his band Adler were poorly attended.
Other members have come and gone, like Dizzy Reed (keyboards), Gilby Clarke (who I think replaced Izzy on rhythm guitars when Izzy left in 1991), and Matt Sorum (who replaced Steven Adler on drums around the time of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"). By the time you get to the Chinese Democracy album, the lineup changes are crazy and all over the place. It's a mess.

There is a reason why they were the biggest band in the world at one time. It was from songs like this and Axl voice it all tied in together and just had the right sound they could go soft or hard at a flick of switch. I still love G&R to this day.
GnR’s first album blew up out of the gate and they went from opening act to headliner almost instantly. Bass=Duff McKagan, who is the man keeping that rhythm in the pocket. The “dun nunt” pausing “dun nunt “ you liked so much was the bassist followed by a run of bass notes. Relisten for the bass and Duff will blow your mind. After the 80s of being ripped off of his royalties by the record companies, Duff went back to school and took finance courses so he wouldn’t be taken advantage of again when he helped form Velvet Revolver. Steven Adler is the drummer and the one Sabastian Bach wrote and sang about in the Skid Row song Wasted Time because Steven was so hooked on heroin. Izzy Stradlin is the rhythm guitarist and the first to leave the band on his own after Steven was fired and replaced by Matt Sorum, formerly of The Cult. You know Slash and Axel. Axel has one of the broadest ranges in his voice in all of rock. It’s why they tune their instruments down a 1/2 step to flats (Eb-Ab-Db-Gb). Songs to react to are anything from Appetite for Destruction. Others are Civil War, You Could Be Mine, Locomotive, November Rain, Don’t Cry, Pretty Tied Up, Reckless Life, Nice Boys, Mama Kin, etc…

It’s not that you’re overlooking them, there are just so many great bands and artists to be introduced to. Guns N Roses is one of those greats for sure and I’m so happy you got back to them. This song is one that you will never forget; you’ll feel it the same way every time you hear it.
Izzy Stradin is the voice you hear. He plays Rhythm guitar and doesn't get enough credit. Overshadowed by Axl and Slash. If you're gonna be overshadowed, I guess that's a pretty good tandem to be overshadowed by, but he is very talented. Guns and Roses was the last great Rock Band in my opinion. There has been good ones since then but they belong with the greats.

I said there has been plenty of good bands since G and R including some bands that I love like the black crows and Beth and Joe. I classify G and R as the last Great rock band because I think they are the last band that had the entire package. very talented musicians, great vocals, stage presence, put on an epic show, swagger, great song writing, good lyrics, variety of sounds in their songs, just the whole thing. Tool along with many other bands are talented or some even extraordinary talented and have some of these elements but I haven't seen anyone with the entire package in a very long time. at least to me and what I like. Everyone loves different things in their music and their bands.

A famous voice coach who worked with all the big name stars has said that out of all of them, Axl's voice was the most impressive, he could do so much with it. That's saying a lot from someone who worked with the best
When GnR were on top they were HUGE, pretty much dwarfed those other bands you listed except for Led Zeppelin. Im pretty sure they still have the highest selling debut album in the US with Appetite for Destruction.
Several years ago I was driving through Arizona, listening to a local rock station morning show. It was one of those crazy morning zoo comedy shows, and they had slash on to interview. They thought it would be really funny to have slash play knocking on heavens door with a guy that plays the accordion, problem was there was nothing funny about it because it sounded amazing.
Another good GnR song to check out is "Civil War" it was off of one of their Use Your Illuson albums (they realsed 2 seperate albums at the same time and simply titled them Use Your Illusion 1 & 2) I was partial to "Mr. Brownstone" off of their first album, and "Patience" was a good, predominantly acoustic song off of their GnR Lies Lies Lies album

In 1975 Eric Clapton played on Arthur Louis's recording of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" which was in a cross-over reggae style. Later Eric Clapton made his version still with a reggae cross-over style.
I really enjoy this version. Axel’s voice is amazing. My favorite version is by Warren Zevon on his final album soon before he passed. It makes me cry every time I hear it since he was “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”. Bob Dylan’s original version is truly fantastic, too.

The deep voice is still Axel Rose. There are parts of the song where the vocals are double and triple tracked to layer his voice on top of itself several times in different notes to create a chordal harmony, or line.

When I first heard this cover song I told my roomies in the army that this is a Bob Dylan tune. They all said, “no way”! This was long before the internet. They had my respect after that.

Duff McKeggan originally only knew how to play guitar before joining GNR. but with Slash and Izzy Stratlin on lead and rythm guitar, Duff forced himself to learn bass. also a side note about Duff, he did a solo album, but it never really took off. but the man can sing too.
in the Skid Row song, Wasted Time, they were singing about GNR drummer Steven Adler and his drug addiction. off drugs, Steven was a hell of a drummer.
Izzy Stratlin and Axle had a falling out due to Axle's drug use and prima-donna attitude towards getting on stage. Izzy eventually left the band under bad terms. at concerts, you'd always see signs reading "Where's Izzy?"
GNR has 4...arguably 5 ...albums that are full fire from start to finish. you would have months of tracks to listen too if you only included 1 GNR per day of uploads ...just saying lol
