    I like commuting on my full suspension. Efficiency is low but comfort is to the max. Slap a leisure gel seat on there and embrace the cruise.

    Used to ride a hard tail on my teens for fun. Then got a full suspension MTB last year, used it everyday, I never complained about it, it is so comfortable, I never wanted to ride a hardtail or road bike anymore. The comfort of long travel full suspension bike is way off the chart for a daily commuter on bumpy UK roads. I tried locking the suspension, I feel every tiny bumps on the road. I can't last 3 minutes with the suspensions locked. People also say that unlocked rear suspension eats power and tire your faster. But I honestly don't feel the difference from locked or unlocked. The only thing I can complain about are the knobby tires with its really high rolling resistance.

    I commute with an MTB on a daily basis, I also used to think my bike was slowing me down when going downhill since you don't have the gear range nor the aero position. Then it became pointless since speeding downhill caused me to crash my bike, I started being more careful and slow after that

    I use to just have a full squish but last year I added a gravel bike. The gravel bike just makes it a lot easier if you want to travel longer distance on pavement or fire roads plus you can still take it green and blue trails. Just remenber the golden rule for the number of bikes to own N+1.

    I bought a pedal assist ebike full suspension (ive always wanted one) im 46 and overweight, i ride 8km flat out, or as long as i can stand the burn lol, i absolutely love my full suspension ebike, i ride during the weekend as well, most of my riding is through walking trails, i know a lot of people discount the ebikes, but for me, i can ride EVERYDAY and the jarring on my body is less and the enjoyment is more! I find im more confident and more adventurous with this bike, and my ineer competitiveness makes me push myself harder im now just using the motor on the 1st setting. You definitely canbise a full suspension mountain bike as a daily. I find in some cases im just as quick as a dude on a road bike, the fact that i can bomb down a grass bank or smash through some rough terrain makes it that way(obviously on tarmac the roadbikes faster) but not near as fun as the bike i purchased
    Thanks for this video go out grind hard!

    There's an old saying: It's easier to make a MTB into a road bike, than a road bike into a MTB.
    Some faster rolling XC tires would make it better for commuting without giving up all your off-road abilities. Another tip is when you max out your gears going down hill, just drop your saddle and tuck down to make yourself more aerodynamic. You'll pass people who are trying to pedal down the hill and save a ton of energy.

      @@TheJofrica try continental race kings TLR protection (not the racesports) they are surprisingly good for trails too, they dont tear for an XC tire but grip in wet berms is poor. front while slide out. their rolling resistance is better than that of cheap bontrager, vittoria and continental road tires. I ride race kings with roadies and during some downhill coasting you are faster than roadies if the road surface is bumpy but if its smooth gp5000 and vittoria corsa speeds will start pulling away significantly on a downhill coast. Hope it helps :)

    As everyday rider I use two Specialized stumpJumper (2022 Alloy and 2019 Expert) only in the town and surroundings. I simply have replaced the original chainring (32T) with a bigger one (36T). This puts an end to that annoyance of pedalling a lot incessantly and also offers more speed. Any vehicle needs suspension and stability but I don't care what type of bike the people use as they use at their own risk.

    I commuted on a hardtail, a carbon road bike, and a full sus. The full suspension is more work, but way more fun, able to jump curbs, take an unpaved trail shortcut. I don't have to ride commute, its fun though. So I don't care if it takes an extra 15 minutes or so.

    I have a Yt Jeffsy 140mm 29trail bike, it’s my main bike. For urban riding I pump up tires to 35, put flip chip in high position, and lock out both shocks. Try shorter cranks, bigger tires or thinner pedals for pedal strikes.👊

    I ride in a city and have been trying to work out why we don’t get full suspension options easily. Sure, paved roads are smooth - but footpaths, driveways and bike-path-warning-strips are not. I’m not doing Tour de France, so speed is not a concern. Every other reason I’ve been given is ‘weight’ and ‘cost’. Thanks for making this video - it’s good to see it from your perspective.

    I like your voice. I've ridden my hard tail before and it's my slowest bike due to the gear ratio limitation. I also swap the tires to more tarmac friendly like Schwalbe Marathons because the off road ones especially with the knobby treads will get worn really fast on tarmac.

    I used to have a Niner jet (130mm front and 120mm rear) and it was my everything bike: road, xc, trail, and park. I found that as long as you pumped up the tires (I had a minion dhf and dhrII) to around 50-60 psi i could even keep on on 20mph avg road rides. As long as there isnt too much pedal bob, full sus bikes can be fine commuters.

    Interesting video! For me, it comes down to tires...I'd hate to prematurely wear down my trail bike by riding on pavement. When you add in gearing , weight, and the aerodynamics of a road/gravel bike it's easy to justify (assuming you can afford it). I'm fortunate to own two bikes that I feel cover most riding conditions: (1) Nukeproof Scout 290 Comp for trails, jumps and more demanding off-road (2) Vitus Substance V 2 "adventure" bike...basically a burly road bike that's great for road, gravel and even light trials. Still...would love a full suspension though lol Enjoy!

    I’m still riding my 2019 Marlin 7 (3x9) and I think it’s a pretty good daily rider with a better gear range than even the newer Marlin 7’s. I mostly ride on gravel with it anyway. A full suspension is WAY out of my price range and beyond my abilities as a rider.
    By the way, my wife is upgrading from a Trek FX2 (hybrid) to a Specialized Diverge base E5 (gravel bike) and I’m kind of envious. She’s going to pass me by soon.
    Speaking of availability, she wanted to get the Diverge Base Carbon but she was told they wouldn’t be able to get a new one in her size until 2023. It’s crazy.

    I've recently had the same thoughts. I checked out a few local bike shops in my area and it seems that there are gravel bikes that are readily available. I thought about getting a gravel bike for doing long distance rides on the road and perhaps some dirt trails on detours. I think that you can definitely use a full sus mtb for commuting. However, I do notice that it feeling heavier on windy days especially if youre pedaling into a headwind. Overall, if I ever had to park my bike somewhere, I don't know how I'd feel about locking up an expensive bike somewhere. I'd want something not too expensive to use as a workhorse.

I'll most likely never take it to a trail and will honestly just use it for fun, biking around nearby, to the stores and whatnot. I've been told now a thousand times that though it looks cool, it's not a good idea because of a million reasons and.. yes.. for efficiency it might not be good but, if the cool looks of the bike is what makes me wanna take it out because.. well it's cool!!! Then.. I'd say that's more efficient than having a bike I don't like and end up never using:P

  • @mattj6676
    @mattj6676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You've got a great bike with quality components on it, so it's going to work well no matter where you ride it! The rear suspension is going to make it harder to wheelie because it will flex, and essentially move the rear wheel around which shifts the balance point. I'm not familiar with the geometry with that bike, but the longer the bike is from seat post back also makes a difference. Guys do wheelie on their mountain bikes all the time though, so I'm sure you'll figure it out. Do you have a shock pump, or are you sure the shop set your shock pressures correctly for you? I bought a shock pump and found my fork was set at about 55 pounds and with my weight it should have been 107, so I had too much sag on my fork. I doubt you're having a similar problem as you're not a heavy guy (I'm 200 lbs), but you can check the spec of your front and rear suspension online if you don't have a manual that came with it, and test the amount of sag in your suspension. It's easy to do, just push down the o-ring to the bottom of the shaft and gently sit on the bike, then get off without bouncing it. Measure the distance the o-ring moved and that gives you the sag for the suspension. If it's too low that will contribute to the pedal strikes. Increasing and decreasing the air pressure in the shocks will adjust that.
    If you really want a hardtail, I love my Fathom 2, it's $1,300 and really well spec'd for the price. It's low and long and has big tires, I like how it looks. You can get either 27.5 or 29 inch wheels, mine's a 29er. 1x12 Deore drivetrain, which is rare at this price point. It will remind you a lot of the Roscoe, just better geometry and drivetrain, through axles, a bit lighter aluminum alloy frame, etc. Good bike. But I don't think you really need it, seems like you mostly ride trails and when you go on the streets you like to jump curbs and stairs and stuff like that, which your current bike will make fun. If you REALLY want another bike, just get a used one online and trash it around. It doesn't need to have the finest of everything to ride on the street. Hell, rim brakes are fine on the street. Used older bikes are cheap and plentiful. Try a road bike, why not? Whatever you do, do it before you have kids, trust me...:)

    Great review of a really FAQ. I recently sold my Fuel EX 5, to go back to my Marlin 7.
    I just like the street rides too much. Like 10 mile rides, if I was doing 15-20 I would get a road bike. But the Marlin 7-8 does a decent job at both MTB and commuting. So if I ever want to hit some blue/green trails I still can.
    The fuel Ex 5 could hit the streets, just a lot more effort. But you won't notice if you don't have another bike to pick up.

As soon as I can I change the transmission for a 1-12, so is gonna be even lighter, perfect for everyday. The bike is a wheelie machine now LOL. If the bike is cheap, why to sell it.

    full sus can commute just fine, just lock out the rear shock and you're good. Won't be as fast as a road bike, but might be more comfortable. Trail Features recommendation to use XC tires for commuting is a good one. Grippy tires will wear out quickly when ridden on pavement. If you're looking at something for road use and maybe the odd bit of gravel, consider a gravel bike, they are nearly as efficient as a road bike, but no problem on bombed out pavement, or gravel roads.

    I don't know if you remember having a dialogue with me my friend a few months ago .. I am the Cop from Baltimore, Maryland who was at a cross roads on buying the 2021 Marlin 6 XXL frame. Well I did buy it back in January '21and I took it home, never rode it directly after buying it .. It stayed in my garage for about a week or so with the new tags still on it .. My co-worker had Marlin 7 and was beating me up about not getting a M7 .. So after deliberation I contacted my bike shop and low and behold they had a new '21 M7 they just received in new and it was for sale .. I contacted them and they let me bring in the M6 on a exchange for the M7 all I had to do was pay the $200.00 difference in cost and tbey sold the M6 while I was still in the store .. So for the extra money I got better upgrades .. It pissed me off that the '22 M8 just dropped a few weeks ago too but it's out of stock and it will be for a while too from what the bike shop told me .. So I just wanted you to know I am on my M7 and loving it and thankful to have a bike .. I Already did upgrades on my grips, pedals and tires .. I went with Maxxis 29 x 2.30 High Roller II on the rear and a 29 x 2.30 Minion DHF on the front .. I will upgrade one day to a full squish .. I have been eyeballing the Feul Ex 7 after watching your video on it .. Take Care .. keep the vids coming .. sorry for my long post too 🤣

    In Philippines, we use mtb for long rides. When I say long rides, its a multi day 500 - 1000km loop.
    Now Im thinking if I will use my full sus for long rides. Haha. Very comfortable while sitting for sure.

    Short answer to your question, yes full suspension can be a daily commuter if setup properly.

    • @fooboomoo

      And what is a proper setup? Would like to hear some suggestions.

    Of course it can, just in inflate ur tyres to max psi so its easier to pedal.

    I mean you can can commute in whatever you got. Personally i bough a very cheap bike to commute around town, wouldn’t dream about leaving an expensive full squish unattended in town.

    Got a roscoe and it does mean work on the trails but also a lot of fun on the streets. Ordered a Fuel Ex but still waiting for it to come in...
    When it's in, I plan to ride the Fuel Ex on the trails and switch it up every now and then, and keep the roscoe for easier trails, when I want a bit more challenging ride or for dailies.

    Missing your Roscoe now? Lol I'm keeping my hardtail. I've done 50 mile road rides with the 1x. Hardtails are do it all bikes. When my FS comes it's just an addition to the stable.

      @@MattyActiveHahah I miss it for you! My hardtail holds a special place. I can't get rid of it.

      The Roscoe is the slowest hardtail there is with 2.8 tires so probably not much.

  • @chrisbalser3808
    @chrisbalser3808 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why do you want a hardtail? You had a few Trek hardtails. How about an inexpensive road or hybrid bike?

      Something to ride around town and do wheelies on but I decided to get a SE fast ripper instead of a hardtail

    Hey man if you keep getting pedal strikes have you thought about changing the length of your crank arms? I bet yours are 175mm and if you ride with a 170mm or even 160mm crank arms you wont get that pedal strike

  • @eggzackary1
    @eggzackary1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’m thinking you’re getting pedal strikes because of the mullet setup on your Status.

    • @MattyActive

    Hey Matty, is it fair to say this bike is easier on paved roads compared to your previous Roscoe 8?

    • @MattyActive
      @MattyActive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say so because the Roscoe had plus size tires and they were super knobby

  • @benshapiroisgay
    @benshapiroisgay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The road wears the tires quicker so I’m sure it can be done it’s just not very good for the bike.

    im interested in knowing wich one is better basically i live in iraq our roads have enough natural speed bumps but people keep making artificial ones and every time i pass a bump i get triggered can a full sus bike make it so i wont have to slow down without needing to stand on the pedals to avoid the shock

    • @fooboomoo
      @fooboomoo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definately helps! I ride my full sus everywhere and i just ride over speed bumps without thinking about it.
