Oh God what did i just fo? I,signed a 15 month lease in Falls church. I moved from Minnesota where my 1 bedroom was $800. My shitty falls church studio costs $1,500. 😢😢😢
I’m Northern Virginia native here and this video is EXTREMELY ACCURATE. Ps I live in Arlington and work in leesburg and the fastest way without tolls is the take the same route as going to the airport. It’s free and cuts out taking 66 and most of 495
In the 22 years I lived there and worked at Tysons Corner I always told people to rent for one year , which is what I did , in order to get a feeling for traffic and amenities. Far to many people check out and see a house on a summer Sunday and think "Hey the traffic is not bad." Then after they buy you find out the first day schools open it adds 45 minutes to your commute and now everyone that was on vacation is now commuting.
Great video and nailed all the cons of VA. Coming from San Francisco though, the prices of everything is much lower in Nova including gas, food, bills, and rent. SF is also not family friendly. SF has its own competitive ego, drug, crime, and culture problems. Everything is more crowded. Only thing they do well is spend money on public parks and can’t beat the weather.
Thanks for the heads up on the annual car inspection. We didn't have those when we lived in Washington, but were surprised to see them here in Hawaii. What a waste of time and money! Now to find a video on sleezy car inspectors in Loudon! 😛
It’s not a waste of money, it’s about $25 a year and it ensures nobody is driving an unsafe car on the roads with a messed up suspension and broken headlights.
I lived in Herndon and Reston from 78 to 2000 and in the late 90's many of the Democrats got voted out after the Republicans promised to eliminate the car tax. They got what they wanted and idiots stopped paying the car tax and got arrested for not paying the car tax. It's still there so how about another fine political promise.
If you think the property tax on cars in VA is bad, try moving into Maryland. I moved from NVA to MD 12 years ago to move in with my fiancé. The shocker was when I went to register my car in MD. They extorted over $1300.00 to register a 4 year old Mazda 3. I deliberately used the word EXTORTED because, I'd already moved. It was to late to change my mind. Most people will not find out about this tax until AFTER they move. Most people will have already purchased a home or rented and paid a moving company so they are down to the bottom of their funds when MD eye gouges them with a MASSIVE tax bill. That's what you get in a democrat run state.
ha, unless I missed it, you forgot to mention the growth of Data Centers across the region, esp in PWC and LC. Motto should be "We Pave over Every Green Space".
I used to live in Springfield/Annandale for almost 30 years, and every year you get at least a dozen mosquito bites. Now I moved to Haymarket in Prince William county two years ago during the pandemic, zero mosquito bites for the whole family. Not sure why though. And not so many squirrels over here, but I see a lot of vultures, that might explain why. And one thing that kind of surprised me was that I see a lot of wild geckos. Fun!!
Yes and the vehicle tax is still high even on older vehicles. I had a 1965 Vespa motor scotter and even in 2000 it was valued at one heck of a lot more than it was worth. They have a minimum valuation they don't go below.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Unfortunately I don't know much about Maryland so I would not be the best person to make videos on Maryland.
As for the tolls in NVA, those tolls were supposed to go away decades ago. The residents of Reston and Herndon did not want the expansion of the Dulles access road, the toll road, to be built in the first place. They didn't want the additional traffic the expanded highway would bring to their communities. The politicians of the day PROMISSED that when the construction costs of the highway were paid for, the tolls would go away and the road would be free. Unfortunately, the state capital/government is in Richmond, a democrat run city. And if you weren't aware, the revenue from the toll road, not the greenway, goes into the state coffers in Richmond, not into the local/county governments of Fairfax and Loudon. Richmond and the democrats that run it use NVA as a huge cash cow in a veil pen. They milk the residents of NVA for every dime they can get.
I don't hear much about floods in this area. Some areas will be more prone than others. In 24 years of living in Northern VA I have not experienced 1 true natural disaster.
I lived in Reston and then Herndon from 78 to 2000. Now I liked the metro subway and all the bike trails but the real killer was the air pollution. As soon as the temp hits 60 degrees the sky gets hazy and once it gets to the mid 80's the sky looks as bad as the wildfire covered skies. The traffic was the pits and any snow or ice storm I took a mental health day and stayed home. It is not uncommon during any inclement weather to hear people taking 6 to 9 hours to do that normal one hour drive. As for housing prices they are close to that here in NH. New 3,000 sq ft house with septic and well so it's one acre and it was $650,000. Not unusual to see houses in the $800,000 to 1 million and that is not even on a lake. By the way back in the late 90's the Republicans pushed out the Democrats because they said they would eliminate the car tax. I gather even they got elected they did nothing.
So the 'some areas conservative and some liberal ' I am curious to know what parts if Virginia are conservative and what parts liberal? 🤔 I'm moving there in 1 month, so it would be good to know.
I have looked into this a bit, and high population areas such as Arlington and Alexandria are very blue, while much of the state otherwise is red politically. Prince William county is a decent mix of both, but leans conservative.
@@Jim_Curtis so how does an area like great falls compare to like clifton? I don't have a lot of experience with nova, but just assumed all of fairfax County was just uniform shade of light blue.
@@hebrews11vs5 I'm no expert on NoVA either, but Fairfax county seems more blue overall. You may just need to research who the specific congressional reps are in each area, but my impression is that Great Falls would be similar to Arlington politically. Outside of the bigger metro areas, it gets more purple.
Any county north of The People's Republic Of Charlottesville is liberal. Also the welfare-heavy areas of Richmond and New Port News are liberal. The remainder of the state is conservative.
I lived in Orange County, California for 23 years and traffic, housing costs and people's attitudes are all worse in southern Cal. The only thing that is better in OC is the sunny weather, but it's not worth paying higher housing costs for. Just go travel there instead.
They used to be one of the top in the country. Teachers now overwhelmed with kids who can’t speak English, gang problems etc. I lived there 27 years just moved. I can see my once nice, safe neighborhood was going down. The high cost of living is going worse. Worked in D.C. for years so I’m done.
Northern Virginia is way overpriced. Living in Northern New Jersey, we have access to the greatest city in the world. In Northern Virginia all you have is DC.
Way to show on No. 7. It's TOO LIBERAL or TOO CONSERVATIVE...way to show, man. Quick editing pro tip. Not sure of grammar usage, type into MS Word, select Review, and then select spelling and grammar. It's what I do, man so I don't look like a dolt.

My least favorite part about living here is the high cost of housing.
Especially if you are trying to buy a house right now.
It's worse on housing costs in California and Washington State.
NOVA is affordable coming from the Bay Area

My wife does the same thing lol. Thanks for watching!

Your right. The only advantage SF has over NOVA is the weather,

Warrenton here, it’s beautiful! Cow town.
The NoVA Lifestyle: People are so snobby.
Agreed. I live in Northern VA.
Its going to be a Escape for me that pays better and I will have a Decent modern apartment 2k for single 1 bedroom with den and balcony
southern VA looks verry rural...housing prices are way lower but not a large selection at this time. or few job opportunities
Personal property tax wtf, on top of sales tax?
Yes and the vehicle tax is still high even on older vehicles. I had a 1965 Vespa motor scotter and even in 2000 it was valued at one heck of a lot more than it was worth. They have a minimum valuation they don't go below.
yeah, sounds horrible, dystopian state!
What about Maryland can you do a video too about Maryland
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Unfortunately I don't know much about Maryland so I would not be the best person to make videos on Maryland.
Maryland sucks even more.

Totally disagree with David’s assessment of the weather. 😊
David, one good thing for you about the car tax is that you could write it off as a business expense. It takes some of the sting out of it.
Very good point
How bad are the floods? natural disasters is a huge thing for me.
I don't hear much about floods in this area. Some areas will be more prone than others. In 24 years of living in Northern VA I have not experienced 1 true natural disaster.
Not a lot of natural disasters happen that often here

It’s definitely a blue state. The annoying thing about being here is that people have such different views and it doesn’t clash well. Nobody is happy
Over priced houses. Its rediculous. They are taking advantage.
Who is taking advantage of who?
It's supply and demand.
