I think its terrible. Princess Diana is depicted with condescension and disdain. She´s unintelligent, complaining, conniving, contemptuous, immoral, the perpetual victim , frankly as plain stupid. Charles is portrayed as intelligent, innovative, creative, entitled, narcissistic and applauded for it, which is a reflection of current society´s appraisal of individuals with narcissistic traits. Thats my opinion. The CROWN is a tribute to Prince, now King Charles - and a denigration of Princess Diana, and we are being coerced into thinking, that she´s far to insignificant to murder. Killing her in a premeditated ochestrated assassination, is a conspiracy theory. Its my contention, based on the evidence, that Princess Diana, was assassinated, in a conjoint operation to save the Monarchy and to facilitate Bill Clinton's retractment from the armament agreement on the abolishment of landmines. Bill Clinton retracted his promise to Princess Diana and the world, on the 16th of september 1997, in Oslo, just 17 days after Princess Diana lie dead in a cold grave. The paparazzi didnt kill Diana. According to their own admission, none og them were in the Alma Tunnel, at the time of the impact at 00:23. They first arrived at 00:25. So who drove the powerful black motorbikes, from Place de La Concorde, down the Expressway and into the Alma Tunnel? Intelligence service agents. It was western intelligence that killed Princess Diana and that is why, the "paparazzi" responsible for crashing the Mercedes, have never been identified, indicted , prosecuted and convicted. It wasnt the real paparazzi, that drove the powereful motorbikes from Place de La Concorde - but the illegitimate, masquerading as the real paparazzi. I have a pretty good idea how this went down.

Well yes, but I think they wanted to portray Diana and Charles with their flaws. Diana was actually depressed, Charles wanted the power he couldn't have and he couldn't feel with a wife such Diana. Well yes and those were all aspects of her personality. People are complex. Diana, Charles, and every human being that’s ever lived.
A mixture of wonderful qualities & actions and flaws and ugly behaviour when under stress in certain situations.
Being British, I have never bought into the “Diana, Saint & Victim”, “Charles Wicked and the Victimizer” hysteria.
The truth was so much more complicated than that, and I believe that the Crown, albeit historical fiction, has portrayed this beautifully.
Charles was forbidden to marry Camilla who was always his soulmate & first love.
Diana had an idealised idea of being a Princess, was intellectually not very bright (I say this factually not with malice as she had so many other astounding qualities regardless) and so never grasped the necessity of the Role itself and the strict requirements that it would place on her personal freedom & self expression.
It was always bound to end in disaster for both of them, and they each brought forth the very worst qualities of the other.
It’s just utterly heartbreakingly sad that they were put into this position at all.

I'm amazed that an award winning show was able to be so thoroughly dismantled in one season. Were the writers on strike? The story line was so disjointed and had very little to do with the Crown. For example, I felt they totally changed Charles from the petty, cruel and spiteful husband we saw in past seasons to some ingenious, conniving, sympathetic character, even though these were the years he was arguably the worst to Diana and the family. Especially scenes like after the whole disgusting tampon tapes is played like “oh all lovers say sweet and embarrassing things in private. And he came out stronger from it.” Like what?! Poor Sarah really catches it in this season. The only thing we hear about her is the toe incident. I didn't buy that explanation for the King not inviting the Czar and his family to escape to England. The Queen told Philip's special friend that Queen Mary couldn't have Germans in England, but the Windsors are mostly German too, with the exception of William and Harry. I think they just didn't want a rival court to be set-up but they could have sent the Czar and his family to America.

The Czar's family could have been relocated to Malta, Cypress, so many other British colonies until things were stable. Queen Mary was a spiteful woman who didn't care for the Czarina. @leigh310 ปีที่แล้ว +11

To me, the fact that the Czar and his family were not protected by his close cousins King George and Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany is one of the most evil things done in history. The 3 rulers grew up together and were good friends. Why King George gave the decision to the Queen Mary is beyond me. The entire family was murdered because of that awful and mean decision. Neither Wilhelm or King George would rescue them. The Czar asked both of them to take them and neither would. The British didn’t want them to come but if King George had requested it because they were cousins, they would have allowed it. It was the King who didn’t want bad publicity towards himself. The Windsors were all German, including Queen Victoria. Their name was changed to Windsor only after WW1. They were all family… Czar Nicholas, King George, and Wilhelm.Wilhelm was the son of Queen Victoria’s daughter, Vicky. Also if Prince Charles was portrayed as he was in this season, I dislike him even more than I did. He was all for himself and even threw his mother the Queen under the bus. Personally, I can see the Prince, now King Charles, as a candidate for the coming Antichrist! He’s for a global one world; he is sketchy about his religious beliefs, and a huge member of the Climate Change Committee.

I said the same thing to my husband. Her voice impression was uncanny and she mostly got the physical part right, but my impression of Diana's raised-eye pose was when she was ducking flashbulbs and maybe even a bit of shyness in interviews. I doubt she did that in normal conversation, so it seemed distracting in informal times with friends or anywhere she felt confident and in control. I felt the same way about Gillian Anderson's portrayal of Thatcher. Yes, Thatcher spoke that slow, (fake) deep voice during speeches. Anyone who knows anything about her knows she actually worked to lower her voice to be taken more seriously, which was understandable for a woman at the time she entered politics. But I doubt she used that formal, maddeningly slow, over-enunciated "speech voice" at home with her husband. It set my teeth on edge so much that I began to fast-forward through all her scenes, which is too bad, because I can never get enough of the amazing Olivia Colman.

I was so stunned at fictional Tony Blair's takeaway from his meeting with Charles was that he was an impressive man. In my opinion, Charles ' clandestine meetings with both Tony Blair and John Major were very self serving. I didn't see a future monarch with a desire to help his county, I saw a man with a bruised ego who had been overshadowed by two very powerful women trying to make himself relevant.
Diana was picked to marry Charles because she fit the whole virgin requirement and everyone thought she was either too stupid to realise she was being used or would just turn a blind eye and keep her mouth shut. No one forsaw her becoming a world wide sensation becoming more popular than the family into which she married. Charles resented his wife's popularity and the fact that he had to marry anyone besides his mistress. He was deliberately cruel to her because of her popularity and basically, for her existence. Diana wasn't perfect but Charles did purposely victimise her. Her best response would have been indifference because he appeared to somewhat thrive on her pleas for him to love her and thrived on being able to reject her.
Regardless of the fictional portrayal of "The Crown" , people know the truth about how Diana was treated.

Me too! I LIKED it -- and I am tired of hearing how bad or boring it wsa. People seem to be unfairly -- and far too -- critical. It doesn't differ from past seasons because the show's quality or style changed, but because the events were as such. It covered the things that consumed the Royal Family and the news media during those years. They fleshed out some backstories on the Romanovs of Russia and their relation to the British monarchy and horrible slaughter of the entire family. They covered the burning of the queen's beloved castle and other political shifts such as with regard to public sentiment and the transition from Major to Blair, conservative to liberal. I think they did a great job bookending the season with the young QE2 christening Britannia to her ultimately shown "putting her down" or out to pasture.
I also think the likenesses and acting were great. So what, he didn't look as much like Charles as the last one. He embodied him and sounded like him and was close enough to be believable. And I thought Diana's portrayal was probably more accurate than what we've been served up in the past from what we've seen due to her poplar public persona and untimely demise. Yes she was a humanitarian and warm and a loved mother and sister and suffered emotionally, but she also had inner turmoil and could behave childishly and selfishly too by many accounts. She is not to be "deified" just because she died so young and so tragically, although I was devastated too and I remember where I was and how I found out. She will die early in next season and the shift will be toward their boys and politics and other world events. All in all I am quite pleased with it. Yes yes, it was different and didn't have the historical awe of the past seasons, but that is to be expected and doesn't mean it wasn't well executed and commendable -- just changing with the times and subject matter.

I understand they used it in Downton Abbey A new Era because the ship looked like it could be from the 1920's. "The Crown" takes after its writer Peter Morgan's own play "The Audience" which actually tells the story of those private weekly meetings between Her Majesty and her prime ministers throughout her reign. Helen Mirren and Kristin Scott Thomas did portrait the Queen on stage magnificently then. And in "The Crown"'s all series, there were plenty of those audiences. ... Now in the last season, HMY Britannia is being decommissioned while Diana prepares for her holiday in the south of France, so it seems. The Royal Yacht was, in reality, taken out of service in December 1997, as where the Princess of Wales did pass away four months prior, in August of the same year. It shall be interesting to see where series 6 takes us for that matter.

It seems degradation to Netflix begins only in death. It feeds into their love of torture porn (from Blonde to this). I was very upset seeing how Diana was shown like this instead of who she was. Diana was rebel and had mental problems, but she was first of all noblewoman and educated in manners, so, what is going on here, in this episode? i am now expert in manners of English high society, except Downton Abbey, of course 😀 so maybe it's allright, just want to know.

The actor change was very disappointing and sometimes hard to follow at first, because you have to guess who is who. I love all the other seasons but this one was disappointing. We waited two years. Hopefully, we don't have to wait another two years and they don't change actors again.

When I first saw the actress playing Princess Anne, I thought it was meant to be Margaret. They totally should've had her play Margaret in the previous season. I like Helena Bonham Carter, but I feel like that choice was more about having Carter starring in the show rather than whether she was the right casting.

      @SWLinPHX ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@samsam-ko3fp I LIKED it -- and I am tired of hearing how bad or boring it wsa.

@@SWLinPHX Ah. And there it is. That’s what I was looking for. Also, I do recall hearing due to the Queen’s passing, some revisions were being made to the show. I interpreted that to mean there would be verbiage at the end of the season to pay tribute. Therefore sunsetting the series. Plus, there was that push for the show to incorporate a disclaimer to educate viewers on it being fiction. All of this was the writing on the wall for me as to The Crown coming to an end. It's funny as it doesn't mention a few more affaires Diana had. Show Charles in the right light, was happy that Britannia got decommissioned but gutted that he had to travel business class. Found it funny that Diana voted against the monarchy which would screw up her sons future. That's why it was such a big thing when the Queen sadly died because she did everything for the good of the country, the younger generation just cares about themselves.. Weird that they showed John Major as a person to be trusted after his affair behind his wife's back.
I also think it's funny that Charles liked that Hong Kong was going back to China because Great Britain or the Queen didn't move with the times......How's that working out for Hong Kong now? • @DD-nt8uj

Was kind of disappointed in this season to be honest. After the first 4 or so episodes, it did not do well to hold my attention (much like the previous season), and even amongst all the drama with Diana - perhaps this itself is what made me begin to lose interest? Don't get me wrong, I am as fascinated by Diana's story as the next person, but I feel like a lot of the writing ultimately came out very shallow and began to rely too heavily upon narratives already established within the media. And with that, characters like Charles, Diana and the Queen began to lose their complexity. For example, how many times did we see Diana "being" a mother? I realise the writers only have so much room in each episode to expose the various aspects of these people's lives, but it made it hard to swallow the Queen's reasoning to Diana that her (and the rest of the family's) reasoning for not being there for her is due to the fact that they are "all busy". "All busy?" Doing what? The Queen worrying about what's going to happen to her yacht? - which also I found strange and awkward that this was such an important part to the first episode of the season, but was not resolved until the very last episode? It was almost like they forgot about it, amongst all the Diana and Charles drama, that they then remembered it and decided to somehow slot it back in to the story in the last episode... Acting wise however, I did enjoy Debicki as Diana, and Lesley Manville as Margaret. As much as I do like Staunton and West's attempts as the Queen and Charles respectively, I couldn't take either of them seriously, particularly in respect to the level of emotional complexity that they were attempting to convey. In saying this, I imagine it would be hard to "pick up" from where a previous actor playing their roles has left off, especially when those actors, Olivia Coleman and Josh O'Connor, had two full seasons to really develop and delve into their portrayal of the Queen and Charles - going through, and "living", all the previous experiences leading up to the beginning of season 5. These actors are jumping in without experiencing any of that depth, and unfortunately I think it shows a bit too much. On the other hand, I actually really enjoyed Miller's portrayal as John Major. I really appreciated Miller's subtlety and unassuming quality. Unfortunately, this was perhaps another aspect they did not but could have given more attention to, developing the relationship between the Queen and John Major. And because of this lack, I also found it surprising in the last episode they attempted to do a kind of "repeat" of the farewell between the Queen and Harold Wilson in season 3. It just didn't work.
Just thinking further now, it may have been more interesting to keep the focus a bit more centred around the Queen's experience and knowledge of the Diana/Charles drama, and to build their narrative around this scope, rather than focusing more or less exclusively on Diana and Charles themselves, at the expense of alienating the Queen too much from the main plotline.
Also, how weird was that scene where Diana first met Hasnat Khan (the surgeon) in the hospital whilst waiting with her acupuncturist whose husband has just had surgery, where she is openly discussing her attraction to him? I mean one passing comment would have been enough to get the point, but it kept going?! Was weird and not realistic. Apart from the fact that I feel Diana would've been a bit more sensible to saying something as audacious within those kinds of circumstances, I felt it was a really weak attempt at trying to somehow "justify" the recurrent theme/relationship Diana would have with Khan and the other significant men in this season of Arabic origin, the Fayed's and Bashir.
