I really enjoyed this series. Particularly the empathetic way Julian felt about long lost relatives he never knew. I loved when he went into the house by the church and pictured his Great Grandmother leaving to walk to her wedding. Thank you.
I really like him he's so lovely. The funny thing us when I found out my grandad was from Prussia I said the same thing. I was so upset they were German not a word was said when I was a child. Mum use to say somewhere in Spain. I'm same age as Julian.
I agree with the dad, my maternal great-grandfather was of German origin, and even though he fought in WW1 and lost a leg, he never spoke about his German ancestry, as if he was ashamed. My grandmother would always play it down too. It wasn't until I was researching our family tree I found out his name was Wilhelm not William as we had been told.
@@lightyagami3492Why are you telling me something I already know? I didnt say they weren' t the same name just that he never ever mentioned his German name or his background or anything to do with being of German descent. I've lived in other countries that have a variation of my name and I use the English pronunciation, because that's the name I was given.
Julian carry is awonderful caring person so we'll spoken entertainer glad his back on stage Christmas is so much fun when he does panto if you have never been it's hilarious go
Julian is such an original, a one off, I couldn't imagine the pressure of having to make people laugh for a living, un like 99% of today's so called comedians he his the master of quick wit.
The running joke in this American family was we don't care where we are from (mostly Britain circa year 1698) as long as it's not French. My paternal grandmother spoke fluent German so we knew where she was from, of course? When I started doing the genealogy, I couldn't get back to Germany. We were scratching our heads. No German in the DNA. There was a lot of French information there though. Come to find out, they were from the Alsace-Lorraine area. That is a mixture of both German and French in that area over decades. So, who knows? I don't really understand why she wouldn't talk about that considering she was here long before the wars. But, I guess it stuck.
I have Prussian Heritage, but unfortunately I can't find it anywhere. My Great Grandma's Doll that is over 120 years old is German, but could be much older since she was the youngest girl in the family
Honestly, look at the Royal family. The British "Isles" means once upon a time everyone's ancestors came from the continent. In terms of DNA, most of us are mutts, including royalty.
I found this episode difficult to watch. The prejudice is shocking, considering how England has been behaving throughout history. I felt a bit of Schadenfreude when I saw mum’s face. As the old Prussians used to say “Unverhofft kommt oft”.
The Germans are hated all over Europe by people who lost family members to their atrocities. In France plaques which mention that time are to the bosch or nazis. My generation won't forget. Never.
A general DNA test of every British person (European origin) is likely to shock the whole „yesterman‘s nation“: I bet they would find a literally awful lot of former French/German/Viking/continental Celtic blood…The British nation still seems to be obsessed with WW I and II and is therefore imprisoned in the past. Obviously many British people still cannot cope with the downfall of the (highly imperialistic) British Empire. I do like the Brits in general but no other modern European nation I know is so strangely obsessed with WW ii (even WW I!) You have to overcome that old past and join mentally the modern united European community, regardless what country. Modern Germans are mainly nice, good people.
His parents were probably born post war. Please don’t judge them harshly as growing up in those days there was still a lot of prejudice as many people lost their loved ones in the war. You just can’t judge people by todays standards if you were not affected.
I really like Julian Clary. There’s something very sincere about him. I would have liked to have seen the rest.
His dad’s laughter when he told her that her grandmother was German was the cutest thing ever LOL

I love Julian's dog, very gentle and well behaved.
Lovely interaction with his parents

Wonderful to be able to visit the archives and the place to get in touch with ancestors.

Wilhelm and William are the same name. It's a direct translation from German to English.

Same. My gran was of german ancestory but never mentioned it during ww2.. apparently it was a hush hush ..

At least Julian knows about his family now. I love the show who do you think you are. I watched Jane Seymour’s one.
It's not bad news. "Mom I'm heterosexual" nothing like that

Nobody belongs 100% to an unique background. Everybody in this world is somehow mixed.
Well said. My Father is from the Republic of Ireland and my Maternal ancestral home is Nice, France.
@@s.andrewchandler-byrne4611 I think everyone should have a DNA test to know their background. Much of today's racism and bigotry would disappear.

I don’t know who Julian Clary is but this was very interesting.
He's a comedian
he's a comedian. happens to be camp.
Trier is a beautiful town
Prussian is not just current day Germany. Also includes areas of Poland and other countries today. Quite a large area.
Wonderful kitchen (green is my favorite colour 💚💚💚💐)
The horror on her face! GERMAN!
My wife had a German mother who's mother was Polish As my mother was Irish and our fathers were both English our son is a very good mix
I may be projecting, but I bet Julian's mum is a Brexiteer
Imagine not wanting to be german.
Julian looks like his Dad
I'm surprised dad didn't ask to be taken to where his German ancestor came from.

Well we can't all have the spotless history Germans do.

You don't understand you are a different generation
Don Dawson 😂
He does kinda look German
It wouldn’t bother me if I found out my family were of German ancestry. Every country has a dark past of some sort.
what do you think you are?
Their Royal family is German…eek!
yeah, we always call them "the Krauts" - you can change your name from Battenberg to Mountbatten, but you can't fool us!
I am so lucky I met all three of them. All of them are natural but Julian’s dad died few years ago

Prussia encompasses a lot of countries:
Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark
Germany
Lithuania
Netherlands
Poland
Russia
Switzerland
*encompassed*. And, really? The whole of Russia?
Surely not Switzerland
I've Russian ancestors, it's not as bad as this woman thinks and I am a good person even though there is this terrible stain on my soul...... 😆🤦😆
The more this fam talks the less I like them. Certainly I'm not the only one.
