I love your city's subway system. It's as beautiful as a museum and the people are so orderly and polite! After Boston's experience in public transit, I nearly wept for joy at your city's! Greetings from Portland, Maine, USA
I still think this is one of the most perfect opera productions I have ever seen - the surrealism of the production and designs in perfect step with that of the opera. I had no idea that a recording existed. A wonderful find. Thank You.
Well, who'd have thought it. The opera with which Richard Jones was destined to kick off 25 years (so far) of his glorious operatic career. This Oranges never has, never will be surpassed. And it never came out on DVD, so a thousand thanks for this.
This was the first opera I saw when I was a child - this very production. It's been a joy seeing it again, and I've been looking out for shots of my father, who is one of the Cranks/Ridicules.
When I was a child in the days before TV, there was a radio program that used the March as its theme song. I think the show was "Mister District Attorney."
I adore this opera. It was the first opera I had a role in back in college. I have to say, the English translation we used was much better and funnier than this one.
Alas, with the current gun violence in America of 2019, this production would not be allowed. And, if it were allowed, you would see all kinds of disclaimers and warnings.
I dunno...it first premiered three years after WWI, which can explain the German Expressionist horror movie motif, but this opera was done so much lighter and happier and better by the Paris Opera in '06. And the 'scratch and sniff' gimmick? A distracting waste of time at best.
After all that work they did throughout the opera and then the curtain call is a mess. People bowing at the wrong times and too soon and the cast looking like they hadn't rehearsed it. Cant stand a badly organised curtain call!!
I saw this on TV back when I was in grade school. I'm now 76. Never forgot it!😄
wow you were already born when prokofiev was still around

I actually starred as a trumpeter for this opera! it was great fun :D
I play trumpet it's a great instrument. Fun opera too.
Great job in this opera.
"starred" has taken on a new meaning?

Absolutely fantastic!
A fantastic production, with a touch of surrealism, for this amazing composition.
amazing!!!!
A very entertaining production. My 9 year-old granddaughter loved it, and I am keeping it for a rainy day!
Thank you so much for posting this Marvellous production, its been a favourite memory for years. I miss the Scratch n Sniff cards though, ha ha,

BRAVI ! SENSATIONELLE LEISTUNG VON ALLEN BETEILIGTEN ! Thank you so much !
39:41 It's the famous march!

So glad this got posted. I was the 4th Truffaldino. We had this on VHS but it got recorded over!
I'm from the Netherlands. This is recorded on the dutch cable network.
I also played Truffaldino but in a mid-90's run. I might've even borrowed your costume!
2:48 Guaranteed to keep awake during the opera
oh my..GOODNESS! the song, so beautiful
The english always make the best staging!
Fantastic !
I've been looking for this for years!!!!!!!!! brilliant!!!!

MAGNÍFICA Gracias por compartir.
Thank you! What an entertainment for me today at home! Thank you. :)
Very impressive production of a very brilliant opera. The music sparkles all the time with many different shades of energy and irony.
really cool directorial choices!
Great to see this on here - my own tape is missing the first 4 minutes .
wow....
I saw this then it was revived at the ENO with almost the same cast.
This same production, sung in the original French, was seen in Lisbon in 1991.
This Twice A M A Z I N G . How Very Respect I'm Acknowledging . This Proud Trick On Display ! IT'S HYPOCHONDRIA !
At first glance, this appears to be a nonsense story, but in fact I think the origin is in ancient folklore. It has deep meaning.

Did you know that Shostakovich wrote a Gilbert & Sullivan style operetta about the Moscow housing crisis.
no haha, what opera is this ?
subtitles for us plebs please
) good
Can the libretto be found on the internet somewhere? It is hard to tell what is being said/sung during some sections.
Kelsey McDonald There is a French production on line with French subtitles, if that does you any good.
I think I might have liked it if it had had subtitles. As it was I could barely understand one word in three.
Great staging and performance, but poor quality recording. Pity
Just skip to the end for the march.

Is it the Tom Stoppard libretto?
Were there actual scents under the numbers on the cards or was this a joke? I would like to do this in a production. Think I may.
I think so. There where actual scents.
The scratch and sniff cards were real but they were not that bad!
someone wanna write an opera reviwe for me? lel

Scratch and sniff
True, Larry Flynt in his 'Hustler' magazine perfected this technology long before Prokofief
I dunno...it first premiered three years after WWI, which can explain the German Expressionist horror movie motif, but this opera was done so much lighter and happier and better by the Paris Opera in '06. And the 'scratch and sniff' gimmick? A distracting waste of time at best.
Lighter and happier iss how I would do it/like to see it, too. In fact, I may.
Do think this has anything to do Palestine in the 1930s and 40s and the murder of a famous female violinist in 1949? She was innocent I tell you!!!
?
English is not an appropiate language for Prokofiev. Sounds really weak, disappointing.
The production is good but I agree about the language, the original French is so powerful, even more than the Russian version
