Tchelio loses three times in succession to Fata Morgana, who brandishes the King of Spades, alias of Leandro. Leandro and Clarice plot to kill the Prince so that Clarice can succeed to the throne. The supporters of Tragedy are delighted at this turn of events. The servant Smeraldina reveals that she is also in the service of Fata Morgana, who will support Leandro. Several soldiers conveniently appear, and the Prince orders them to bury the two dead princesses. He leaves to seek clothing for Ninette so he can take her home to marry her, but, while he is gone, Fata Morgana transforms Ninette into a giant rat and substitutes Smeraldina in disguise. The first time I ever heard Catherine Dubosc was in "Tales of Hoffmann" where she was a terrific Nicklausse; so it's nice to hear her interpretations of some other roles.
Too bad that such an opera doesn't have an Italian libretto. The original story is an Italian fairy tale, "L'Amore per le Tre Melarance", so it deserve an Italian libretto! In any case, I love this version: singers, orchestra and direction are all excellent.
At the time of creation, the Russian avant garde masterpiece could hardly have had any audience at La Scala. Exit the need for an Italian libretto. Prokofiev led an international musician's carrier, settling in Chicago, Paris and Berlin, which explains the existence of English, German and French libretti.
