How to keep Chickens & Rabbits Cool in Summer Heat (Misting System/Frozen Bottles)

  • Chickens and Rabbits do not handle hot weather well (plus 95 degrees) and ultimately could die in these conditions. I use two different methods to keep them cool: An efficient water misting system and frozen water bottles. I use a water time to control the time of day the system turns on.

    we are in south Texas and we get nasty summer heat. Our rabbits run free in the barn (paver stones to prevent digging out, hay on top). Our misters running continuously were making hay moldy. We cut back on timers, but had some scrap granite pieces we got for free from local granite store. We put them in freezer, then laid them on ground. Buns crash on top of them. Stay nice and cool. Check with your local granite shop. They always have scraps from kitchen counters and and glad to get rid of them. You will need a good support brace in your cages as they can be heavy depending on thickness. But they are free!

      after a heat wave of 105 degrees for the past 4 days I had the mister running for almost 8 hours each day, so the floor of the run became quite muddy. But luckily now there's been a break in the weather and within a day everything dried up nicely again. It helps that the chickens are constantly turning their bedding and keeping it aerated :)

    How about $4 or $5

    • @BackyardBoogi
      @BackyardBoogi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know what I'll would give you a rabbit for $1, but first please make sure that you have permission from your parents or landlord that it is OK for you to keep one. Also the rabbits that we have get really big (13 lbs), so I would encourage you to google online and find the closest animal shelter to where you live and ask them if they have pet bunny that you can adopt. They don't get as big (5lbs). There may also be a rabbit rescue organization close to where you live (google for it as well) and they usually are open to giving away a rabbit or a bonded pair to a good home. I loved your violin videos BTW, you have an amazing talent!

    • @BackyardBoogi
      @BackyardBoogi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry, unfortunately we don't sell rabbits for $1. You might want to visit an animal shelter and see if you can an adopt a rabbit there. You would do some good, giving an unwanted rabbit a 2nd home.

    A rabbit should have FRESH water every day and in a bowl, not them nipple things!
