Thank you for sharing these precious memories. Your Love for knitting sure has its roots in these experiences. I too remember packages wrapped in brown paper, although ours did not come from quite as far away. But I do remember that undoing the strings was the beginning of the magic that is unwrapping gifts from grandparents.
You have such lovely memories of that time. My paternal grandfather in Lancashire had an insurance business that was connected with the cotton business; he died in the thirties, so I never knew him.
I really do. Although I do not feel old, I do feel like I have one foot in the olden days and one in present time. I've been writing these stories in order to preserve a bit of my family history as I can feel it slipping away with the next generation never having had these experiences. It is a bit funny that my kids won't listen to me tell these stories over supper but they will listen to them on youtube. I guess it speaks their language!
So sweet. Cherish these memories. That world is sadly long gone.

Grandparents really made everything magical. I am glad I lived in a time when a parcel was special and cherished.

Fascinating personal insights into the British textile industry. So many things used to be made in England! Thank you for sharing.

About a parcel being special and cherished, I believe we are the lucky ones, because we needed so little to create so much joy and happiness. 🙂
So true. We are indeed very lucky.😊
