Short Sunderland Flying Boat - Rescuing of downed Pilots
In WW2 many downed pilots were lost to the sea although Air Sea Rescue would do everything they could ,some pilots were just not found in time .If equipped the stranded R.A.F pilots would use from their survival dinghy a Gibson Girl (Transmitter T-1333 or AN/CRT-3B) ,so called because of its female hour glass shape as it was wound between the knees to charge it.
It was a signalling device when hand winded it would kinetically generate a signal to a kite flown from the dinghy which would broadcast a distress signal for rescue. It could only transmit not receive. Here a Sunderland of Coastal Command has picked up their signal and tips its wings to tell the downed pilots it has seen them ,the weather begins to close in. Help is on its way .
