Why I like GURPS 3e and you should too!

- In today's video, I talk about my preference for the third edition of GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) over the fourth edition, detailing various aspects of gameplay, game mechanics, and overall presentation. I go on to talk about how 3e is sufficient for most players, as it combines all essential elements required for gameplay without unnecessary complexity all in one book. Its a toolbox for GMs who like to really dig deep and explore anything their imagination can bring to the table.

What are you thoughts and experiences with GURPS?
GURPS is one of those games that never really clicked for me. Definitely playable, especially if the GM is into it; but for me, its main value is in the sourcebooks. They provide great material for whatever genre the book is focused on; and if you are familiar with how GURPS works, its usually not hard to convert the stats to you preferred system if you are so inclined.
@@Killraven. I understand. I guess maybe it clicked for me is because of it’s a toolbox and it’s basically 3d6 for everything
Thanks for the art likes! I tried to illustrate whatever was on the page in a way to inspire the player/gm into thinking outside of the obvious... like GURPS allows us to do...
oh wow you are the artist? AWESOME. Yeah I love the style. Its literally my favorite.
I’ve played GURPS since the 90’s but not much recently. I have a friend that has most of the GURPS books but he doesn’t have a lot of time to GM anymore.
He really likes the sci-fi aspects of it too
I've played GURPS since 1990, and have always enjoyed it. The difference between GURPS and other systems is whereas D&D makes the Monsters for you, it's all up to YOU with GURPS. Which I like.
Agreed.
I liked Man to Man through 3rd edition.
I’ve never tried Man to Man, but it looks like fun
@TheEvilDM it was GURPS before 1e was released, and we played so many one or two-shots that when the genre switched no explanation as to how the pcs had gone into space or why an elf was on earth in car wars 2035...
@ oh wow.
@@TheEvilDM BTW, fun fact. When WEG Star Wars expired and WoTC got it, they folded in a lot of D6 System into AD&D 2e (+ the late 2e expansion books) to make 3e/3.5. More of D6 System can be seen in 4e.
@ oh wow I didn’t know this!
I used to have the GURPS Steampunk and Steam-tech books, but let them go on eBay when I was a little desperate for funds a few years back. My mistake. They were good for inspiration for my D&D 3e campaign setting LOL
I've never played GURPS, but I have GURPS Conan as part of my Conan collection. I would've played GURPS but no one in my gaming circles played.
I just wish I could get my people here to play some 1e AD&D.
hey you got your account back, yay! Well we can play GURPS in our group :)
3:35 you mean sourcebooks.
@@myeartrumpet yeah. Thank you!
2 things I know about G.U.R.P.S. :
1) Generic Universal Role-Playing System
2) never heard of anyone personally who played it
@@MisterVolts yeah. The second one is kind of true. I only experienced playing it once. I hear lots of people talking about playing it, but never see a game of it. Though I never did look hard enough online..
@TheEvilDM To be fair (minor segue here), it's probably a great source for ideas/inspiration. I've incorporated many concepts from various TTRPG systems into our Forgotten Realms version "1.x" campaign (PF for example).
@ well cool. I’ll have to look into it
I love GURPS 4e. I have never tried 3e. Fantasy is good, but the monster selection is lacking without importing from D&D or some other source. Supers is good for low level stuff, but tends to break at higher levels, so Batman, not Superman. The best part to me is that I build exactly what I want. The rules support every power I have ever wanted, every class I have wanted, with 100% personalization. If I play a thief, I can wield a morningstar if that is what I want. I can cast buff spells, rather than strictly illusion and enchantment, if I want. In any game, personalization is very important to me. and no other game I have tried comes close, except Champions.
yeah. its really a toolkit. I like 3e especially because its all in one book, I've played it and I enjoyed it. Supers is next on my list.
@@TheEvilDM I do not know 3e, but in 4e, the Supers book is almost nothing but comic lore. Powers is where all of the rules are, and that is fantastic.
@ so looking at it. 3e supers is basically the Supers book from 4e and the power book from 4e in one book.
