CERN’s Ambitious Plan to Build the Largest Particle Smasher Ever

  • The LHC is the world’s largest particle collider, but has it hit its limit? An international community of physicists are calling for a new CERN “discovery machine” that can reach even higher collision energies and potentially unlock the biggest mysteries of our universe.

Next-generation LHC: CERN lays out plans for €21-billion supercollider
    www.nature.com/articles/d4158...
“The document offers several preliminary designs for a Future Circular Collider (FCC) - which would be the most powerful particle smasher ever built - with different types of collider ranging in cost from around €9 billion (US$10.2 billion) to €21 billion. It is the lab’s opening bid in a priority-setting process called the European Strategy for Particle Physics Update, which will take place over the next two years and will affect the field’s future well into the second half of the century.”
How to make a Higgs boson
    www.symmetrymagazine.org/arti...
“It doesn’t seem like collisions of particles with no mass should be able to produce the “mass-giving” boson, the Higgs. But every other second at the LHC, they do.”
The Physics Still Hiding in the Higgs Boson
    www.quantamagazine.org/the-ph...
“But physicists understand little about the omnipresent Higgs field, or the fateful moment in the early universe when it suddenly shifted from having zero value everywhere (or in other words, not existing) into its current, uniformly valued state. That shift, or “symmetry-breaking” event, instantly rendered quarks, electrons and many other fundamental particles massive, which led them to form atoms and all the other structures seen in the cosmos.”

This is so fascinating to me, i work as a humble lift installer, where doing all the electrical work is so important, yet it is only ~30 to 40 parts to wire and connect properly. Then it's obviously the mechanical part as well. And some times i think that's advanced. But then i watch a video like this, and i just laugh. The amount of engineering, craftmanship, thought, brilliance and just sheer knowledge that is required to build something like this just boggles my mind. Absolutely brilliant, a big shout out to all the minds out there that are so intelligent that they are capable to understand the science behind smashing an atom, let alone build a machine like this. Truly incredible! I'm in awe of the people that drive a program like this. Really inspring.

    • @Baleur
      @Baleur 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thats not how it works. An atom sized black hole wouldnt grow to any noticeable size until millions of years has passed. You see, black holes dont "suck" anything in, stuff just orbits it. Its actually rare that particles get on a perfect collision trajectory spiraling inwards.

Temperatures when the particles collide is up towards 5,5 million degrees and when they smash lead particles they heat them to 500 degrees Celsius to evaporate the lead ions before sending them trough the accelerator. The magnets directing and accelerating the beems however is cooled down to -271 degrees but can reach 500 degrees in less than a second. The energy in the halo is enough to not only quench magnets, but to melt them...

biases in the scientific field would need to be passively eliminated. a common goal for excellence, organization. real researchers looking for unbiased results generally do not get the funding they need, and are less driven by real progress, while those trying to sway opinion with selected variables or those missing the mark get much more. its a distribution. sure there can be a good study on how it should be done and where the problems come from and by whom if its not been done already. systemic reviews are usually more accurate in findings, as hindsight is 20/20 or better.

@Walker Do you realize how much 700 billion dollars is? We spend more money on our military than the other top 5 largest militaries COMBINED. If we put that capital towards humanitarian efforts, we could stop global warming and end world hunger, and we'd still have some money to spare to put towards our own infrastructure. And, that's just the money for one year. If we just cut $300 billion from the budget each year and put that money to better use, in 10 years time we could be living in an actual utopia, and we'd still be a military powerhouse.

Imagine discovering something so fundamental everyone on the planet knows it and basically everything in physics revolves around it, even 100 years after you came up with it. Even people that have no clue about Einstein, when asked who the most intelligent person to ever live is, immediately say Einstein, that is how insanely great this man was.

A future collider project is worthy of funding eventually but there are several other areas of science that are much more urgent for humanity. Theoretical physics can wait, put it on the back burner. Let them sift data for a while with current tools and low cost upgrades to those tools. The overall science budgets should focus on biology, medicine, public health, earth sciences, climate science, oceanography, meteorology, electromagnetic fields, solar and cosmic radiation, mitigation of radiation effects on biological and technological systems, pollution remediation, and nuclear power. This will allow us to better deal with pandemics and other health problems, climate change, ocean resource depletion, space weather, energy production, and space exploration. Schedule a future collider to be built closer to the end of the 21st century. Leave it as a project for our grandchildren.

There are so many problems with that idea. Do you have some just off the top of my head. How do you build a particle accelerator over the ocean and how would you prevent it from breaking when a tsunami hits. It may not be necessary to build one that large. How are we going to pay for it. Where are we going to get the energy and materials?
