When I saw this video in my feed I thought to myself “Ooh I want to have mark do this” and then I watched the video, and decided that there would be almost no point, as I had already seen most of mark’s list within this very video
Well the best games this decade were Inde. It was an indie game boom spawned by Minecraft. A new method of marketing that requires zero money. TH-cam gaming. Your small game can spread and become some of the biggest games just from word of mouth. Meanwhile the triple a industry turned into producing unfinished or rushed cash grabs with absurd monétisation models.
Yup I mean indie games are definitely the best games right now since so many AAA game industry’s make so much stuff that isn’t fun and try to get your money.
Daniel Madrid I wouldn’t really blame anyone since about most of the best games of 2017, 2018, and 2019 are indie since most AAA games aren’t that good anymore because of microtransactions but the indies shaped up most of the second half of this decade
It is one of those games that I will continue to pick up and play every now and then for the rest of my life. Sucks that Microsoft owns something like that, it should be free

I will probably look back and call this decade "The Indie Decade" of gaming, there have been a lot of outstanding indie games that have even overshadowed AAA releases, and im sure many of those games (such as FEZ, Minecraft, Shovel Knight, etc.) will live on in many people's hearts, including mine

And while I think Minecraft, Undertale and Hollow Knight deserve a place here (I would include Ori and the Blind Forest too), the other ones are not as good as some AAA games that he didn't include here. God of War, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Dishonored, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Dark Souls 3, Metal Gear Solid 5, GTA 5, Portal 2 - these titles I think are better than Stardew Valley or Spelunky or Celeste (they are amazing games, but those AAA games I mentioned are better candidates tbh) But maybe Snoman wanted to show how indie games had such a big influence on gaming. @Jeffry Rezai Minecraft is a game thats really hard to get an actual rating for because everyone is gonna play the game completely different and are gonna have radically different experiences. BOTW is a very open game however it has concrete goals and a clear end point. However minecraft is a game with no real end point in sight leading to some people feeling accomplished after a few dozen hours and others still finding more to do after thousands.

itslucasio I can’t say anything about Shovel Knight since I haven’t played it, but Hollow Knight is a right work of art. Everything about it is just so amazingly designed, from the tight, fluid gameplay, to the bosses, to the beautiful artstyle, and even the story is pretty interesting.
I liked the gyro puzzle when I was using a controller. If I was playing in handheld mode, the gyro puzzles are horrific. You constantly have to turn the switch away from your eyes, so you can't see what the hell is happening.

This decade has been filled with amazing games on both sides, but in terms of quantity, AAA games are uncontested.

I would put portal 2 on their somewhere, just for being arguably the best puzzle game of all time, if not the most influential, but all these games are good. I haven't played stardew valley though

Portal 2 was all about story and shit with puzzles. The puzzles consist of "find the one platform to shoot the portal on and you've solved it" because only one wall allowed a portal to be shot on it.
I had no problem with motioncontrols personally and never understood why people dislike em. i even aim with motioncontrols to be more accurate. Sure the skyward sword kind of stuff would be a little annoying but other than that i dont get it
Kevin Drongowski this decade for me was the rise of indie games and the fall of triple a games. Indie games got more popular thanks to TH-cam gaming and stuff spreading through word of mouth as well as steam getting more accessible to indie devs with project greenlight(I think). Minecraft was the first un this list and kicked of the indie boom(by outselling every game ever lol). And then you have the triple a industry going from the group known for its polish and scale and technical innovation to monetization mania with loot boxes and many games being unfinished bug filled messes.
@@reallyabe "the fall of triple A" thats a bad joke. There will always be failures even among indie games, but 3A gets it the worst due to their ability to market and brand recognition. Personally i dont play indie games but it has recently had a huge surge in popularity no doubt but 3A games are definitely not falling. The quality of the best 3A games like witcher persona 5 and BOTW are unrivaled by indie games and other 3A titles however since there are a higher quantity of known 3A games being developed and in turn expectations are set in which usually they fall short of. I dont think indie games suffer this though as they can fall back on "This was made by an independent studio " if they dont succeed however large developers dont get such an exit. They have to meet fan expectations, They have to pull a profit, They have to keep investors happy and thats why some developers who have forsaken quality for profit shit out games for increased sales. BUT THEY SUFFER MASSIVELY FOR IT, big developers have lost massive portions of its fan base by doing this and their reputation isnt something they can rebuild easily without a game worthy of critical and commercial success. And some developers like naughty dog have made hit after hit after hit and has such a loyal fan base who would put their lives on the line to attest to their quality, Yes this decade has seen an increase in indie games, But overall 3A games are improving and it has not fell

I don't really like triple AAA games outside Mario Tbh. Glad to see Indies is where its at for a lot of other gamers. I feel like 3A games feel bloated, overly recycle, and their ridiculous lean towards a more cinematic nature as problematic. Indie games further expand and are perfecting the true core and essence of great gaming fundamentals. I find games like Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight much more beautiful even if it doesnt showcase its respected hardware's capabilities. That's me tho. I'm not into games like uncharted, cod, the last of us, witcher 3, etc Dark Souls Is an exception but its super inspired by classic games like Castlevania.
I completely agree. I still enjoy it to this day. Even though its a buggy mess, most of those bugs allow for some crazy and hilarious things to happen (even more so in Oblivion)
@@cozarooni1834 I think, from a purely technical standpoint, Skyrim is an improvement on Oblivion. It has more polished game mechanics, looks better and has a more interesting environment. But I'd also argue it's much easier to fall in love with Oblivion, not just for its superior side quests (Dark Brotherhood quests in Skyrim don't hold a candle to the Oblivion ones) but also for its hilarious bugs, as you say.
@@mistertagomago7974 I like both Celeste and SK, but they would never be in a top 10 for me. DS I recognise as a very Influential franchise, but it's not for me. I tend to prefer games that take inspiration from it, like God of War or Jedi Fallen Order.

I feel my #1 pick has to be Furi. It was already remarkably engaging the first time I played it, but speedrunning it brought out a habitual focus I didn't know I had in me. I've made so many friends through it, and even got to fly overseas for the first time to play it at SGDQ. It's made such a positive impact on my life that nothing really comes close, and I'm fairly sure I first heard about it through this channel. Thanks as always for so consistently digging up great titles.
I have finished this game many times but I always have one very big problem with the controls. The dodging is registered on release to let the game know if you are doing a normal or charged dodge. Problem is that different controllers have different register times on release with old controllers being the slowest. I have tested that with 4 different controllers and the difference is not big but it is noticeable. This small inconsistency is what makes me noy want to replay it that often
Xenoblade was 2009 in Japan, so maybe he wouldn't count it. Also, honestly, Persona 5 is more style than substance 🤷🏻♂️ at least to me it felt like that. The world was great but compared to TMS#FE, the battle system majorly disappointed me. World was cool, at least

Honestly, I was a bit iffy because of the title but wow, I never thought I would fully agree on a Top like this. I am ashamed to say I never played Spelunky, Stardew Valley, BotW and not nearly enough Dark Souls. However, when I expected you to talk about big titles from the past years, you just pulled out Celeste, Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight back to back. These games are very important to me as they introduced me to indies and made me realize how much I love video games. But the start of all this was probably Undertale. That was a game I truly loved, the first time I felt like I was part of a community. I probably wouldn't be watching this video if I missed my chance to play it. Anyway I thought I could write a bit about each game here but that's a bad idea so uuhhh You have excellent tastes in games and I have much yet to learn.
What? It's completelly different! Stardew Valley's mining is more like time management and resource management (with a bit of combat, not a lot of focus on that tho). Terraria is more about discovery, treasure finding and a lot of combat. I love mining on both tho!

Love the different reasons for games on this list The only ones I'd put in there instead are Persona 5, Portal 2 or maybe, maybe The Binding of Isaac or Super Meat Boy Can't speak for BOTW and Spelunky becauses I havent played them, but I'd probably take Stardew Valley off the list. It's amazing at what it does, but still "only" feels like a polished and enjoyable game and "nothing more than that". For me, there's no doubt that Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Undertale, Minecraft and Dark Souls belong on this list.
I admit that persona 5 or Mario odyssey should've been at the stardew valley spot, breath of the wild deserves to be on the list for sure since it brings so much joy
Stardew might not stand out among the giants in terms of innovation, but at the same time it does something seriously right when I find myself still l going back for a new go even after putting in hundreds of hours through multiple playthroughs. Where players who usually don't enjoy the genre still find themselves immersed in this one.
I was watching and as the screen went dark after botw and i heard the piano of minecraft i just. Oof that nostalgia. I was really young when it first came out and it was the first game that my dad had managed to really get me interested in, and playing it with friends or by myself truly was an incredible experience.
@@flesheaterrrr I laughed out loud when I read your message. Little Big Planet is the only game that my mom has been able to play (aside from Wii Fitness). The controls are simple enough and the gameplay is straightforward enough that it can be played by just about anyone. If Sackboy controlled like shit, I guarantee you that it wouldn't be so easy to play. It's not going to crack any top 10 lists in my eyes, but it's a very cool game.
@@ScootaReader I actually bought my PS3 specifically to play LBP and was really disappointed. It felt so floaty. The movement isn't tight like Mario, so you couldn't make super precise levels, insane shit like you see in Mario Maker. I liked LBP, but was disappointed.
@@flesheaterrrr It definitely had its fair share of problems and weaknesses, the only part I disagree with is how the character controls. The game is very accessible, and the way the character controls is quite predictable and easy to get used to. You're not wrong at all in describing the character as floaty, but that's mostly to permit reaction time, so less accomplished players have a bigger window to do something. Like if Cuphead had underwater physics. Yes, that would make Cuphead a lot easier. That's what I'm trying to say by describing Little Big Planet as accessible. :P
Plenty of Super Mario Maker levels have been beaten by fewer than 5 people ever. You can always make some arbitrarily "harder" challenge in a game. Maybe I challenge you to complete 6,543 Spelunky runs in a row without sleeping. That's pretty hard. That's not what a game's difficulty is. Hollow Knight's difficulty is not based on Godmaster and Path of Pain.
Some games I would at least consider as Honorable Mentions: * Batman: Arkham City (or possibly Asylum) * Portal 2 * Kerbal Space Program * This War Of Mine

Skyrim: we cant deny skyrim is a thing. it came out in 2011, were al pretty old uh? but yea.... just... the name is self explanatory. it's skyrim. Hollow knight: yes. this is probably my favorite soundtrack of any game ever... and it has a gameplay that matches said soundtrack, made it eassy to pick this one. BoTW: if skyrim defined what a good open world was for the mainstream public, BoTW redefined it. Super smash brothers ultimate: yes. ultimate. I dont think any other game in existence will come close to claim the crown of biggest crossover in gaming than utimate has. it is literally the only place i know where mario can fight sonic, megaman, pacman, cloud, ryu, freaking snake from metal gear, AND BANJO & KAZOOIE. try to digest that fact tonight. shovel knight: when i think great plataformers, many, MANY come to my mind on these last years. DK tropical freeze, rayman legends, yooka layle IL, but... while they are all good games, if I had to give the decade to a single one of them, shovel knight would take it no doubt. FF14RR: how many series have 14 numered instances of them? and how many RPGs can say they are bigger than WoW? the answer to both of those questions, combined, is something only one game has achived to this day. and if you are into MMORPGs, I literally can't tell you to play a game other than final fantasy 14 in this day and age. it deserves to be on this list. Sonic mania: okay, shovel knight deserved best plataformer to me... but... Sonic mania... I jsut can't NOT put it on my list. dont tak eme wrong, sonic mania as a game alone is AMAZING. probably my favorite sonic game. ever. but when you add to that the fact it also was made with love, by fans, who were given permission by sega, and the result is... just something that was good enough to put sonic from "eh, it didnt had any good games latelly" to "holly crap, will the next game be as good as this?!", and its a classic style sonic game to topple it off.... mania is sonic's redemption, from fans, to fans, with love. god item 7 already... im gona try to keep it short from now on. undertale: talking about undertale without spoilers is... hard. but... it is a game that i was bllessed to play before it become mainstream. and.. what a blessing it was, not knowing what was the way to do stuffs, and simply discovering, interacting with all i could find, and exploring the world, making new friendships, enemies and battles i could never forget... amazing. and while hollow knight akes best soundtrack, undertale is at close 2nd. binding of issac rebirth.: a boy crawls down his basement, hiding from his mom, and finds a whole world where he has to fight literal angels and demons with his tears and blood (and piss sometimes) to survive.... what a premise that is. and yet, what a game. its something i can just pick up and play, and that i love to repeat over and over. what am i gona find the next run? how are thigns going to interact? what of the MAAAAAAAAAANY missions am i going to tackle today? it is infinite replay. yes, spelunky is good, and obviously, more iconic, but as MY representant to rogue-like games, im putting my favorite on the list. BoI, you earned your spot. and finally, minecraft. yes, minecraft. i once said "minecraft is like videogame legos." you can let your imagination run wild. make your own world, your adventure, set your objective, and build. fight zombies, pillage a town, survive, build a boat and explore the ocean, BUILD A GAMEBOY, ORDER A (real) Pizza, play hunger games, travel the world, MOUNT A PIG. that is minecraft, its freedom. its free will. I once said minecraft is like videogame legos, but i was wrong. it is much more. and it deserves to be called the game of the decade. even if ive grew out of it.
I don't want to offend you but just because Minecraft brings you nostalgia it doesn't mean that it's the best game ever. It's a very simple, boring game. It's good the first 10 minutes but then I get bored to death.

None of the top 10 were based on art style. They were based on gameplay. Some of the best gameplay comes from very specific visions that are built and refined without time constraints by small, extremely passionate teams. Of course it's not going to look like a Pixar movie.
I think making a top ten for video games is a bad idea. It shouldn't even be top 10. It should be top 10 for EACH GENRE, and I'm not even sure that's enough. Video games have become so diverse that you really can't just assume, yes, maybe you can put 1 or 2 definitive top 1 and top 2, but the rest are going to be different for each person. It's like saying 'top ten books' It's meaningless because if you like history, there are great history books, if you like sci fi, there are so many sci fi books, and if you like anything else, there are classics for anything else too. 'Not sure what I could have kicked out of the list'? You're entirely right. It's absolutely impossible to single out the classics of the decade imo.
I was excited to see what was number one. In my mind I though, Spiderman, God of War, MGS:V or Portal 2... Then you hit me with the music. I honestly felt stupid, with one note you reminded me that the best game doesn't have to be this new, graphical achievement and action game. It is just minecraft. Thank you for this amazing video. My favorite game is terraria, as its so universal, with so many enemies and bosses, hardcore challenges and a huge amount of weapons. D u n g e o n g u a r d i a n
@Ziltoid And that's on you. These past years AAA games have been fine. Are there a few bad ones? For sure. But they are not the majority. Same can be said for indie games. There are a ton, just like AAA games, of low effort trash indie games out there. But again, just like AAA games, the good indie games outshine the bad ones
I really wish shooters didn't have such a bad rep for being repetitive. There's so many that, sure, had ups and downs, but built communities and friendships. I'm talking about Black ops two, destiny, and others. These games are outstanding and i believe they're better than some on this list.
For me, some of my favorite games of the decade would include Smash Bros. Ultimate, Persona 5, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Shovel Knight, Bayonetta 2, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Sonic Generations, as well as a shout-out to the Resident Evil 2 remake.
syan It was a good enough game to completely revitalize a franchise on the verge of death and turn it into a B-tier Nintendo franchise. I still don’t know if I prefer Awakening or Three Houses, but Awakening is definitely an important game.
My horizion on games I played is rather small but I love Persona 5. Its almost scary how much Jokers side kick grew on me despite his flaws. Serously I cant talk about this game without goshing about how much I love this little fellow. I really like the first Bayonetta. I would love to play the second one but money can be a bitch sometimes.
10 most disappointing games of the decade? That sounds fun. Just plain “worst” would be boring because you could just put a bunch of shovelware crap on there and call it a day. Disappointing means the games had potential but soiled it. My most disappointing game would probably be Paper Mario Sticker Star, because the first 3 Paper Marios are just flat out some of the best games Nintendo’s ever put out, and sticker star just went and killed that all.

When combining personal bias with impact I thought of this 5. Celeste (fav game of all time, but not as much impact) 4. Super Mario Odyssey (love it and it’s the best Mario) 3. Shovel Knight (blasted indies to an extreme height) 2. Breath of the Wild (just a masterpiece) 1. Minecraft (it’s Minecraft. Enough said)
I stayed away from Stardew Valley for a long time out of loyalty ro Harvest Moon, of which it was a blatant rip off in my eyes. I hadn't actually played a HM game since the GBC and PS1 though, and I eventually found out that Stardew Valley is the game HM should have evolved into but never did.
Yes, it's just a minor evolution of an old concept. Compare that to most of the others, which have either much more depth, much more polish, or actually spawned a distinct genre.
fashnek Most of the others are even more blatantly "inspired" by games that predate them by decades. Spelunky is just Spelunker (clue is in the name), Hollow Knight is just a metroidvania, Shovel Knight is just a NES style platformer like Duck Tales or Castlevania, Undertale is just an Earthbound inspired RPG, Celeste is just a splatformer like VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy, and BotW is just an open world game with radio towers, copypasted dungeon rooms, and collectibles. Minecraft is the only one that started a genre.
It’s not all down to genre. It’s about the actual play and polish. I’m not going to defend Shovel Knight much, but it’s not simply good because it has a pogo, it is quite distinct. I would not have put Celeste on the list, but it definitely doesn’t feel the same to play as the other games you listed (and those are also wildly different from each other). Not all genres are equally broad - It would be crazy to suggest all Metroidvanias are as similar to each other as SV is to the HM games. Some (like Snoman, here) would say Dark Souls was different enough from existing 3D action to spawn a new genre.
So you don't play games literally only because they're the same genre as older games? You're missing out on amazing games if you're doing that. I find that attitude a bit bizzare. Like Shovel Knight is probably my favourite game ever, certainly my favourite platformer, and I've been playing games since the 80s. It's its own thing, it's inspired by older games sure but it's not a rip off. And even if it WAS a rip off, please explain why that's a bad thing if the game is good anyway. I guess you don't ever play the 2D mario games, because they were heavily inspired by (and in your words are a "rip off" of) Pac-Land. Miyamoto explicitly said that, he wanted to copy what Pac-Land did, with that being perhaps the first true sidescrolling platform game of that style. Funnily enough with Stardew Valley, people say its what harvest moon should have become, but the Harvest Moon DS games have everything stardew Valley has, like the fighting in mines, relationships and marriages, fishing, even the choice of having either a dog or a cat on the farm, everything. People are comparing stardew Valley to the earliest Harvest Moon games, the SNES and Gameboy and PS1 ones, when really they were a "rip off" of the later harvest moon games. A lot was taken from the Rune Factory games too (spin offs of harvest moon). Stardew Valley is not very original whatsoever but its still one of the greatest games ever made, genuinely. I've put 250 hours into stardew Valley on my switch, more than any other game including BotW. And I've only just now started a new farm, those 250 hours were on my very first save. Celeste also plays absolutely nothing like VVVVV, I dunno why you brought that up But yeah seriously explain to me why you refuse to play games that are of the same genre as older classics. Cos that means you don't play about 95% of games that exist. These new modern classics, these amazing indie titles, may have similar mechanics to older games, but in so many cases they are significantly better than what inspired them (compare Spelunker on NES to Spelunky, it's night and day the difference in quality). It's all about the execution, as the other person said. Sonic was partly inspired by Mario, and designed to compete with mario. Does that mean the classic sonic games are just "rip offs". No, of course not. They are their own thing and are amazing in their own right. But you refuse to play them because they happen to be platformers where you press the button and the character jumps, so it's a "rip off" of mario (or really of Pac Land)

This is actually a REALLY good list. Only things I personally feel are missing are Terraria, Portal 2, and maybe Oneshot. I would also but Gungeon instead of Spelunky (Haven’t played it yet).

Well the best games this decade were Inde. It was an indie game boom spawned by Minecraft. A new method of marketing that requires zero money. TH-cam gaming. Your small game can spread and become some of the biggest games just from word of mouth. Meanwhile the triple a industry turned into producing unfinished or rushed cash grabs with absurd monétisation models.

God of War, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Dishonored, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Dark Souls 3, Metal Gear Solid 5, GTA 5, Portal 2 - these titles I think are better than Stardew Valley or Spelunky or Celeste (they are amazing games, but those AAA games I mentioned are better candidates tbh)

@Jeffry Rezai Minecraft is a game thats really hard to get an actual rating for because everyone is gonna play the game completely different and are gonna have radically different experiences. BOTW is a very open game however it has concrete goals and a clear end point. However minecraft is a game with no real end point in sight leading to some people feeling accomplished after a few dozen hours and others still finding more to do after thousands.

I liked the gyro puzzle when I was using a controller. If I was playing in handheld mode, the gyro puzzles are horrific. You constantly have to turn the switch away from your eyes, so you can't see what the hell is happening.

Portal 2 was all about story and shit with puzzles. The puzzles consist of "find the one platform to shoot the portal on and you've solved it" because only one wall allowed a portal to be shot on it.

I think the biggest take away here is how good indie games can be.
Kevin Drongowski this decade for me was the rise of indie games and the fall of triple a games. Indie games got more popular thanks to TH-cam gaming and stuff spreading through word of mouth as well as steam getting more accessible to indie devs with project greenlight(I think). Minecraft was the first un this list and kicked of the indie boom(by outselling every game ever lol). And then you have the triple a industry going from the group known for its polish and scale and technical innovation to monetization mania with loot boxes and many games being unfinished bug filled messes.

thats a bad joke. There will always be failures even among indie games, but 3A gets it the worst due to their ability to market and brand recognition. Personally i dont play indie games but it has recently had a huge surge in popularity no doubt but 3A games are definitely not falling.
The quality of the best 3A games like witcher persona 5 and BOTW are unrivaled by indie games and other 3A titles however since there are a higher quantity of known 3A games being developed and in turn expectations are set in which usually they fall short of. I dont think indie games suffer this though as they can fall back on "This was made by an independent studio " if they dont succeed however large developers dont get such an exit. They have to meet fan expectations, They have to pull a profit, They have to keep investors happy and thats why some developers who have forsaken quality for profit shit out games for increased sales. BUT THEY SUFFER MASSIVELY FOR IT, big developers have lost massive portions of its fan base by doing this and their reputation isnt something they can rebuild easily without a game worthy of critical and commercial success. And some developers like naughty dog have made hit after hit after hit and has such a loyal fan base who would put their lives on the line to attest to their quality,

I don't really like triple AAA games outside Mario Tbh. Glad to see Indies is where its at for a lot of other gamers. I feel like 3A games feel bloated, overly recycle, and their ridiculous lean towards a more cinematic nature as problematic. Indie games further expand and are perfecting the true core and essence of great gaming fundamentals. I find games like Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight much more beautiful even if it doesnt showcase its respected hardware's capabilities. That's me tho. But I'd also argue it's much easier to fall in love with Oblivion, not just for its superior side quests (Dark Brotherhood quests in Skyrim don't hold a candle to the Oblivion ones) but also for its hilarious bugs, as you say.

I feel my #1 pick has to be Furi. It was already remarkably engaging the first time I played it, but speedrunning it brought out a habitual focus I didn't know I had in me. I've made so many friends through it, and even got to fly overseas for the first time to play it at SGDQ. It's made such a positive impact on my life that nothing really comes close, and I'm fairly sure I first heard about it through this channel. Thanks as always for so consistently digging up great titles.

I have finished this game many times but I always have one very big problem with the controls. The dodging is registered on release to let the game know if you are doing a normal or charged dodge. Problem is that different controllers have different register times on release with old controllers being the slowest. I have tested that with 4 different controllers and the difference is not big but it is noticeable. This small inconsistency is what makes me noy want to replay it that often

Honestly, I was a bit iffy because of the title but wow, I never thought I would fully agree on a Top like this. I am ashamed to say I never played Spelunky, Stardew Valley, BotW and not nearly enough Dark Souls. However, when I expected you to talk about big titles from the past years, you just pulled out Celeste, Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight back to back. These games are very important to me as they introduced me to indies and made me realize how much I love video games. But the start of all this was probably Undertale. That was a game I truly loved, the first time I felt like I was part of a community. I probably wouldn't be watching this video if I missed my chance to play it. Anyway I thought I could write a bit about each game here but that's a bad idea so uuhhh

What? It's completelly different! Stardew Valley's mining is more like time management and resource management (with a bit of combat, not a lot of focus on that tho). Terraria is more about discovery, treasure finding and a lot of combat.

Can't speak for BOTW and Spelunky becauses I havent played them, but I'd probably take Stardew Valley off the list. It's amazing at what it does, but still "only" feels like a polished and enjoyable game and "nothing more than that".
For me, there's no doubt that Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Undertale, Minecraft and Dark Souls belong on this list.

Stardew might not stand out among the giants in terms of innovation, but at the same time it does something seriously right when I find myself still l going back for a new go even after putting in hundreds of hours through multiple playthroughs. Where players who usually don't enjoy the genre still find themselves immersed in this one.

I was really young when it first came out and it was the first game that my dad had managed to really get me interested in, and playing it with friends or by myself truly was an incredible experience.

The controls are simple enough and the gameplay is straightforward enough that it can be played by just about anyone. If Sackboy controlled like shit, I guarantee you that it wouldn't be so easy to play.

The game is very accessible, and the way the character controls is quite predictable and easy to get used to. You're not wrong at all in describing the character as floaty, but that's mostly to permit reaction time, so less accomplished players have a bigger window to do something. Like if Cuphead had underwater physics. Yes, that would make Cuphead a lot easier. That's what I'm trying to say by describing Little Big Planet as accessible. :P

Skyrim: we cant deny skyrim is a thing. it came out in 2011, were al pretty old uh? but yea.... just... the name is self explanatory. it's skyrim.
Hollow knight: yes. this is probably my favorite soundtrack of any game ever... and it has a gameplay that matches said soundtrack, made it eassy to pick this one.
BoTW: if skyrim defined what a good open world was for the mainstream public, BoTW redefined it.
Super smash brothers ultimate: yes. ultimate. I dont think any other game in existence will come close to claim the crown of biggest crossover in gaming than utimate has. it is literally the only place i know where mario can fight sonic, megaman, pacman, cloud, ryu, freaking snake from metal gear, AND BANJO & KAZOOIE. try to digest that fact tonight.
shovel knight: when i think great plataformers, many, MANY come to my mind on these last years. DK tropical freeze, rayman legends, yooka layle IL, but... while they are all good games, if I had to give the decade to a single one of them, shovel knight would take it no doubt.
FF14RR: how many series have 14 numered instances of them? and how many RPGs can say they are bigger than WoW? the answer to both of those questions, combined, is something only one game has achived to this day. and if you are into MMORPGs, I literally can't tell you to play a game other than final fantasy 14 in this day and age. it deserves to be on this list.
Sonic mania: okay, shovel knight deserved best plataformer to me... but... Sonic mania... I jsut can't NOT put it on my list. dont tak eme wrong, sonic mania as a game alone is AMAZING. probably my favorite sonic game. ever. but when you add to that the fact it also was made with love, by fans, who were given permission by sega, and the result is... just something that was good enough to put sonic from "eh, it didnt had any good games latelly" to "holly crap, will the next game be as good as this?!", and its a classic style sonic game to topple it off.... mania is sonic's redemption, from fans, to fans, with love.

undertale: talking about undertale without spoilers is... hard. but... it is a game that i was bllessed to play before it become mainstream. and.. what a blessing it was, not knowing what was the way to do stuffs, and simply discovering, interacting with all i could find, and exploring the world, making new friendships, enemies and battles i could never forget... amazing. and while hollow knight akes best soundtrack, undertale is at close 2nd.
binding of issac rebirth.: a boy crawls down his basement, hiding from his mom, and finds a whole world where he has to fight literal angels and demons with his tears and blood (and piss sometimes) to survive.... what a premise that is. and yet, what a game. its something i can just pick up and play, and that i love to repeat over and over. what am i gona find the next run? how are thigns going to interact? what of the MAAAAAAAAAANY missions am i going to tackle today? it is infinite replay. yes, spelunky is good, and obviously, more iconic, but as MY representant to rogue-like games, im putting my favorite on the list. BoI, you earned your spot.

None of the top 10 were based on art style. They were based on gameplay.
Some of the best gameplay comes from very specific visions that are built and refined without time constraints by small, extremely passionate teams. Of course it's not going to look like a Pixar movie.
I think making a top ten for video games is a bad idea. It shouldn't even be top 10. It should be top 10 for EACH GENRE, and I'm not even sure that's enough. Video games have become so diverse that you really can't just assume, yes, maybe you can put 1 or 2 definitive top 1 and top 2, but the rest are going to be different for each person.
It's like saying 'top ten books' It's meaningless because if you like history, there are great history books, if you like sci fi, there are so many sci fi books, and if you like anything else, there are classics for anything else too.

10 most disappointing games of the decade? That sounds fun. Just plain “worst” would be boring because you could just put a bunch of shovelware crap on there and call it a day. Disappointing means the games had potential but soiled it.
My most disappointing game would probably be Paper Mario Sticker Star, because the first 3 Paper Marios are just flat out some of the best games Nintendo’s ever put out, and sticker star just went and killed that all.

I stayed away from Stardew Valley for a long time out of loyalty ro Harvest Moon, of which it was a blatant rip off in my eyes. I hadn't actually played a HM game since the GBC and PS1 though, and I eventually found out that Stardew Valley is the game HM should have evolved into but never did.
Yes, it's just a minor evolution of an old concept. Compare that to most of the others, which have either much more depth, much more polish, or actually spawned a distinct genre.
fashnek Most of the others are even more blatantly "inspired" by games that predate them by decades. Spelunky is just Spelunker (clue is in the name), Hollow Knight is just a metroidvania, Shovel Knight is just a NES style platformer like Duck Tales or Castlevania, Undertale is just an Earthbound inspired RPG, Celeste is just a splatformer like VVVVVV or Super Meat Boy, and BotW is just an open world game with radio towers, copypasted dungeon rooms, and collectibles. Minecraft is the only one that started a genre.
It’s not all down to genre. It’s about the actual play and polish. I’m not going to defend Shovel Knight much, but it’s not simply good because it has a pogo, it is quite distinct. I would not have put Celeste on the list, but it definitely doesn’t feel the same to play as the other games you listed (and those are also wildly different from each other). Not all genres are equally broad - It would be crazy to suggest all Metroidvanias are as similar to each other as SV is to the HM games.
Some (like Snoman, here) would say Dark Souls was different enough from existing 3D action to spawn a new genre.
I've honestly stayed away from Stardew because I know it'll be sickeningly addictive to me. I know it by experience from when I playd Rune Factory 4.
So you don't play games literally only because they're the same genre as older games? You're missing out on amazing games if you're doing that. I find that attitude a bit bizzare. Like Shovel Knight is probably my favourite game ever, certainly my favourite platformer, and I've been playing games since the 80s. It's its own thing, it's inspired by older games sure but it's not a rip off. And even if it WAS a rip off, please explain why that's a bad thing if the game is good anyway.
I guess you don't ever play the 2D mario games, because they were heavily inspired by (and in your words are a "rip off" of) Pac-Land. Miyamoto explicitly said that, he wanted to copy what Pac-Land did, with that being perhaps the first true sidescrolling platform game of that style.
Funnily enough with Stardew Valley, people say its what harvest moon should have become, but the Harvest Moon DS games have everything stardew Valley has, like the fighting in mines, relationships and marriages, fishing, even the choice of having either a dog or a cat on the farm, everything. People are comparing stardew Valley to the earliest Harvest Moon games, the SNES and Gameboy and PS1 ones, when really they were a "rip off" of the later harvest moon games. A lot was taken from the Rune Factory games too (spin offs of harvest moon). Stardew Valley is not very original whatsoever but its still one of the greatest games ever made, genuinely. I've put 250 hours into stardew Valley on my switch, more than any other game including BotW. And I've only just now started a new farm, those 250 hours were on my very first save.
Celeste also plays absolutely nothing like VVVVV, I dunno why you brought that up
But yeah seriously explain to me why you refuse to play games that are of the same genre as older classics. Cos that means you don't play about 95% of games that exist. These new modern classics, these amazing indie titles, may have similar mechanics to older games, but in so many cases they are significantly better than what inspired them (compare Spelunker on NES to Spelunky, it's night and day the difference in quality).
It's all about the execution, as the other person said. Sonic was partly inspired by Mario, and designed to compete with mario. Does that mean the classic sonic games are just "rip offs". No, of course not. They are their own thing and are amazing in their own right. But you refuse to play them because they happen to be platformers where you press the button and the character jumps, so it's a "rip off" of mario (or really of Pac Land)

This is actually a REALLY good list. Only things I personally feel are missing are Terraria, Portal 2, and maybe Oneshot. I would also but Gungeon instead of Spelunky (Haven’t played it yet).

I wanted this game to be good unfortunately when I spend about over 10 hours I had enough and realised this game is terrible and obviously not of the same Quality of Past 3D Zelda games like Twilight Princess or Majora Mark which I have played and complete which I could into to more details way they’re better.

1 while i dont like weapon durability either, it is an artistic decision and since the game makes getting new weapons incredibly easy, so i can forgive it
2 what do you mean copy and pasted boss? is the final ganon fight just a boss rush of all the ganon blights, because otherwise that doesnt make any sense as the ganon blights are each mechanically very unique
3 there are just as many dungeons that couls be considered "boss dungeons" in botw as there is in twilight princess which you praised
4 what do you mean by "they should have added a option to turn down the difference"? what difference would we be turning down? that phrase on it's own makes no god damn sense
5 again, the rain is annoying (when you're trying to climb something), but it's not too hard to work around (you can easily sleep the rain off)
6 i agree you should be able to repair your broken weapons, and some are repairable, but again weapons are so plentiful that it's easy to forgive/overlook this
yes the game is flawed, but all the zelda games are going to have their flaws that we can nick pick them over. and when we get down to it i had the same kinda childish excitement exploring hyrule as i did when i played the original zelda game for the nes when i was like 5 or whatever. and overall, for me at least, that sense of excitement overpowered all of the frustrations i experienced so far
