My father worked at the Bally/Midway factory in Forest Park, IL that assembled the Pac-man cabinets in the early 80s. He worked the graveyard shift for the stock room and was making $13.50/hr which is about $44/hr today. It's crazy how many warehouse jobs will still start you at around $13/hr. It just goes to show how unappreciated manual laborers are nowadays.
Fascinating , those people are so detached on the arcade production line as you could maybe expect but I would be blown away , I'd defer all bonuses and ask for a cabinet :)
Duuuhr, I hadn't seen the further info when idly viewing this on my phone earlier, can see now it clearly states about it being Howard Phillips, Nintendo HQ, Super Famicom, yadda, yadda, yadda...I was just surprised to see it there when looking at 80's stuff ;)
There are more arcades active in North America right now than there was 10 years ago. They are mostly "attraction" barcade style and what not, but don't act like they aren't there.
raylyd ahhh the good old days when everyone thought the good times would last forever and so they had no problem subscribing to work ethic propaganda... The world has changed since then now a days the factory pays you pretty much the same crap wage as does the restaurant and even the cheap ass office and Walmart!! Of course most factories have forced overtime which only stupid people like they fail to see that it only leads to paying more taxes!! Of course the mandatory overtime is really another example of inflation I mean the standard factory work day was 8 hours now it has become 12 hours a day that's 4 hours overtime which you'll be lucky to actually get paid for 1 hour of it!! Coming soon 16 hours a day!!! And no working a lot doesn't make you a badass!!! Oh yes and of course the job worshipers are on the rise professing nonstop about work ethic propaganda.. some people never shut up about work every little conversation they must go out if their way to say the word (work) it's annoying!! People are retarded and fail to see that by going with the bullshit and job worshipping they are creating a low wage environment and helping employers turn back time to the 1920's and early 30's.. they fail to realize that our great grand parents fought for the 8 hour day 40 hour week!! Ok some overtime here and there but not everyday nor week!! But the slaves will never learn!!
I just noticed at the 1:00 mark how close that guy comes to smashing the neck of that vector monitor on the rack nearby. Anyone who has ever done that to an arcade cabinet will be able to relate with me wondering how many times he actually might have done that.
Nerrrrrrrrrd :p The footage *might* be from early 1990 - as clearly Howard is playing a Super Famicom, not a Super NES. Plus, Howard left Nintendo in May 1991... six months before Super Mario World dropped in the U.S. But... Super Mario World was in development for THREE YEARS before it's 1990 Japanese release, which puts it into the timeframe I believed this footage to be from at the time I put this video together: Late 1989. Goes without saying that Howard having a yet-to-be-released game in his office was not an uncommon thing at the time. All that said... who f'n cares?
Antes si se creaban juegos de CALIDAD!, No ahora todos los juegos llenos de parches que solo se centran en multiplayer y no en una buena historia o jugabilidad
Meh. The 1Up machines are not made for the die hard collectors, just the casual homebuyer who wants something affordable and with a small footprint that doesn't look like it sat in a laundromat for decades. I have no problem with them. They made "home use" pinball machines and air hockey and all that for generations now... the 1Ups are the same thing. I'd have loved them as a kid.

This country is a fucking joke.
No one is stoked by the fact this is not some Asian sweat shop
No prob. I wish I had more of them building the Trons, easily one of the most awesome arcade cabinets ever.
So much nostalgia in this video!!!
Thanks to Kotaku and Arcade Heroes for picking this vid up tonight.
0:56 CRT 15khz: R.I.P.
The cost of this Pacman Arcade machine was $2400 bucks in 1981, approximately $7000 as of now
Fascinating , those people are so detached on the arcade production line as you could maybe expect but I would be blown away , I'd defer all bonuses and ask for a cabinet :)
I would have loved to work at a warehouse setting up new cabinets you could almost get the sense of being there from this video!
Wow, a look back at the golden years of gaming...awesome, thanks for sharing!

Do you have anymore footage of the Bally/Midway factory? I love that stuff!
What I would do for one of those minty Pac-Man...
I thought the same thing, seeing those brand ass new DK machines
Build one yourself =)
3:19 Howard, the old Nintendo USA President (and from Howard and Nester comics from Nintendo Power)
Thanks for posting this!
44000 and still growing my friend.
The arcade machine
End of an era. The home consoles have improved so much and offer so much more nobody uses arcade machines anymore.

Great!!!!!!!!Thank you!
Greetings from Germany!

that's my brother at the :20 mark in the brown t-shirt!
u should ask him if he has anything sealed cuz he would be rich if he sold them now lol
I would like to see how they drew the picture on the cabinet
Gotta love those 720p VHS tapes.
TH-cam compresses the video, so uploading at a higher resolution maintains the best quality.
Awesome video
How It's Made: 1980s edition.
Gracias, Duxa

I believe that's a warlords cab so that'd be a raster monitor. Everyone loves the cocktail but I'd much rather have the upright. Awesome vid!
Holy shit look at those boxes for Super Mario @ 3:41 !!!!!
