    Rifled muskets firing minie balls was standard issue for most union regiments in the Civil War, the confederates tried to equip theirs with rifles as well, but many were forced to use older smoothebore muskets due to supply shortages.

    3:10 Heyo, the story you are talking about is about the bearskins and Mitre(mainly used in 7 years war etc) type of headwear. The ones they have in the timestamp are called Shakoo. I'm not 100% sure, if it wasn't one of the reasons why they were made tall, but one of the main reasons why they were designed this way was to offer more protection against cavalry. Cavalry saw a massive rise during Napoleonic wars. Infantryman often grow long hair and tied them into braids on the back of their head, to get protection from cavalry sabres. It might sound unreal, but it actually worked quite well. Same with Shakoo, there was more of the leather the sabre had to go through, when the cavalryman attacked from the top of a horse so most of the momentum of the sabre was absorbed by the shakoo. Also it allowed for better "ventilation" than the previously used bicorns.
    The story you are talking about is true, but for the bearskins and mitre headwear. This type of headwear was used mainly by grenadiers and guard regiments. Those soldiers were chosen from the highest members of the infantry. For example, members of Napoleon's Old Guard had to be at least 180cm (5.9 feet) high, while the average height of a Frenchman at that time was 160cm (5.2 feet). Add to that the size of the bearskin wich is about 45cm (19 inches) and you get humongously huge looking person. These regiments were specialized in close quarters combat and they were preceded by their immense reputation as guard regiments. If you imagine you are some poor russian peasant, conscripted to go fight in a war on the other side of the continent, with height of about 150 cm(5 feet), and you see these massive "titans" with height of 230cm (7.5 feet), stadily marching in your direction with fixed bayonets, reputaton of the French army at its highest, and with the reputation of the guard as undefeated elites of the best army in Europe, screaming "Vive l'empereur!", it is no wonder, that most of the melee charges during Napoleonic wars resulted in one or the other side routing even before any real close quarters combat began.
    I attended some of the reenactments and it may sound funny, that something like making the soldiers look bigger, was the reason for the design of the headwear, but these guys in the guard uniforms with bearskins on their heads really do look much more imposing.

    Rifling was invented in early XVI century and was actually in use since then. Rifled muskets were more accurate but slower to reload. If I remember correctly Zaporizhian Cossacks during Chmielnicki uprising were using those by having preloaded gun having one very accurate shot by standards at the time but next ones were undersized balls so loading was easier and faster but with less accuracy. I'm not sure what method was used for rifled muskets that were in use 200 years later during American civil war. Probably something better was invented as quite a while passed since then.

    • @peytonburrell6303
      @peytonburrell6303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the invention of Minie balls that could easily be inserted into the barrel solved the reloading issue

    • @Krokmaniak
      @Krokmaniak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peytonburrell6303 I quickly checked it and yeah. It's way better method than using ball that is too small and is bouncing around inside barrel leaving it at random angle like Cossacks did it to reload faster.

    Yeah, the American Civil War era firearms had a round called a Mini-Ball. Where one end of the bullet was shaped like a standard musket ball while the other side had an impression. The round was pre-packaged and would be ramed down the gun like a musket ball with the impression down. The impression and the muskets rifling gave the bullet more acuracy and range while still keeping the "blow a golfball sized hole in him" level of damage when it hit someone.

  • @shovel662
    @shovel662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay so in the civil war you had a mixture of rifles and muskets. Most rifles were muzzle-loaders, but occasionally somebody would show up with a prototype breech loader. At the start of the war, they were absolutely using outdated napoleonic tactics, but quickly changed. It was still one of the last wars where linear formations were still effective.

  • @ozzmen4494
    @ozzmen4494 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The name Hitler was very unusual though his grandfather was called Hiedler a deviation from another word which was somewhat spread around in austria but his father Alois changed it to Hitler and to add in some documents Alois is registered with his mothers name Schicklgruber so it is debatef wheter his fathers name was actually Hiedler. So the taboo about his name because its potential history or spread is not that complicated and easy to even forbid.

    Wikipedia:
    Pickaway County is also known for its various places with the name "Hitler", including Hitler Road, Hitler-Ludwig Road, Hitler-Ludwig Cemetery, and Hitler Park. They are not named after German dictator Adolf Hitler, but instead after a local historical family named the Hitlers, who have been described by a local paper in 2011 as "fine, upstanding citizens". The family included George Washington Hitler and his son, Dr. Gay Hitler, who worked as a local dentist between 1922 and 1946

    ok a bit of context about hitlers last name: on his fathers side it was schtickelgruber and on his mothers side it was heidler, and basically he chose hitler as his last name later in life cause he hated his dad (who beat the shit out of him when he was a kid) and also it sounded cooler

    The American civil war is roughly in the middle between the n
    Napoleonic Wars and the first world war. And though they used front loaded riffles in the civil war. They actually also had rifle companies in the British army against Napoleon. Not all was smooth bore muskets.

    I mean, what's REALLY funny about the talk about Gitmo in A Few Good Men is that it's actually after the Cold War had officially ended and there really weren't any hostilities with Cubans at that point. This was also before Gitmo became a POI holding camp.
    At the time of A Few Good Men, Gitmo would have been a very boring, sleepy posting and you'd be bored out of your mind.
