I somehow felt the movie lacked coherence. The college portions and Preity portions were over- generic and unnecessary. They only hindered the pacing. You can't keep mixing commercial elements with art film elements. You have to take a bold call and lean to one side. The journey part of Kavin's struggle could have been explored more. The ending seemed like a "Deus Ex Machina", a plot device meant to suddenly bring a happy ending by solving an unsolvable situation for closure. Felt too convenient. Overall, Star had a lot of nice moments but felt empty as a whole.
you definetly can mix commercial elements with art film elements. They are not making pretentious movie. What you are saying is bunch of nonsense and using pretentious words to describe a film.
The problems I saw in this movie: - Within first 15 minutes we know that this is a zero-to-hero story where the hero is going to become IAS officer, or cricketer, or music director at the end of the movie. So for the rest of the 2 hours and 20 minutes, we are just waiting for it to happen, which is really boring and that is why lot of people feel this is just short film content stretched into a movie. - Aiming to become a movie star is a desire and not a fight for survival, so we are not able to empathize with the main character and it is not giving the audience an immersive experience. - If he doesnt get admitted into the most popular acting school in India, then he should try one of the hundred others in the country. Idhellaam oru problemaa paa ? - A beautiful girl stalking you after you just had a breakup is more like every man's dream and not really a problem. - Lot of unnecessary subplots. Most annoying was the second heroine's father not being able to pay his rent and almost 10 minutes running time around it. - Lot of lazy writing like there are almost 6 instances where one character slaps another character. The frustration and exchange could have been conveyed through other ways.
Exactly I felt the same. If you see Soorarai potru, To own a flight & take people is also a desire. Nothing wrong about the desire. But how convincingly you're making the audience to dwell into the character's life is what is missing in Star. Namma jeichittom maaraa nu sollum podhu vandha connection and emotion, Good take kalai nnu vetrimaaran voice la varum podhu I just felt like...Oh ok....
its not being negative on purpose, and there is ntg wrong with negative comments as long it doesnt hurt or affects anyone in a bad way. People tend to share why it didnt work for them and thats fine. The part where it turns toxic is when you force others to comply with yr thinking/opinion, thats it. so chill tf down

Wonderful conversation. Elan doesn't have the usual vibe of a Tamil director, even compared to his other young peers and that difference is felt in the way he treats his scripts, things don't feel forced and he reasons quite beautifully too.
I was hoping Elan would be asked whether he is a big Varanam Aayiram fanboy. I picked up on a lot of similarities (intentional or not) with VA like supportive father, travel in pursuit of something, heartbreak in that pursuit, the iconic crying telephone booth scene, the heart break setting him up on a journey to rediscover himself, etc
For me, Star is an offbeat gem that won't cater majority of the audience positively; maybe in a few months, it'll be truly appreciated! There are certain moments which felt disjointed/clichéd/impractical, but from watching in the shoes of Elan, my heart was full! Pleasant surprises, great focus on Kalai and his family, some hard slaps to reality and all of those topping with YSR's incredible musical score - it was an enthralling journey! Best wishes to the team for the success, and I hope the universe will fall in love with Elan soon ❤
#STAR is already my film of the year ✨ loved the way of how he presented the life of kalai. this movie really worked for me..The one shot climax was one of the best climax scenes of Kollywood. i don't know about others but I personally think Elan made the film really well.
I have 2 question to director: 1. The accident scene is perfect cut for interval. Why extension for few more minutes? What is the impact of additional shots? 2. The reference of dusty mirror. Where was the idea came from? This is one of metaphor in Upanishad.
This is a good film, and I completely agree with BR! Those who have experienced life at its toughest will understand the impact of ‘STAR’. The dream that the protagonist had is simply a medium called ‘cinema’, which you can replace with any industry one dreams of. This movie is strictly for dreamers. One should approach this film with an intellectual and philosophical mindset to fully appreciate its depth. The climax, 8 minutes single-shot hospital episode, is a brilliant piece of construction that showcases many subtle nuances. I enjoyed every detail. This movie stands on par with Malayalam cinema, and I hope the Tamil industry takes note and strives to produce high-quality movies like this. Kavin’s acting is simply superb. I am in awe of his effortless transitions. All the actors have given their 100%, contributing to a truly collaborative and compelling performance. I appreciate the way the director conveys his opinion. Good creators speak less, and as the wise man William Shakespeare once said, ‘Have more than you show, speak less than you know'. I am definitely going to watch this a few more times to savor and understand the nuances. And, it goes without saying, I am a fan of Pyar Prema Kaadhal too. Dear BR, if you happen to read this, could you please let me know how I might contact you? P.S. I appreciate your work and would love to connect!

After first 20 minutes of fun, i thought movie was going to lie flat and usual movie.. but after the Bombay sequence, the movie picked and held me completely... Brilliant climax topped it...
Best movie for this year so far after manjumel boys. Kudos to the director Elan and his team. The movie was unbelievable and was inspiring for me as well because the movie is not about cinema is about following your passion no matter what happened in your life. Vera level movie. Be stubborn to be a star in your life. 🌟
The opinion on a movie is subjective, i also felt the movie was extremely mediocre but after seeing BR’s views I think some parts of the movie hits close to home for him and thats why he likes it…ig
Was expecting interval to be cut at accident shot... except that all other thing worked for me... can get the reasons of elan for criticism thrown. Hope he don't change his novel approach.
Although the movie did have unexpected and confusion(good and bad) points in it, I think this approach should have been taken by Elan like in a potential Star 2. The second movie onwards of any series is often watched by the ones who have watched the first one and are willing to engage themselves again for the second time. There seems to be many types of perceptions amidst this film primarily because of the "confusion" factor. The "good" part of the confusion is that suddenly we are like "wait, I didn't predict this...how does this connect?...." which maintains interest for most watchers while a minority would get frustrated that it's nonsense. On another level, There is the perception of how much "we" understand. Your red may be my white and so on... This leads to people who might judge the film as good but mostly bad due to the "incomplete" screenplay as justifiably many critics as well as comments section have highlighted. This is definitely respectable as sometimes due to human flaws we, as movie watchers might not capture the nuance of the film all at the same time and at the same capacity. Critics like Blue Sattai Maaran say that the screenplay is rushed, abrupt, no time to digest the scenes, as well as why create such a huge confusion outside of tamil industry and place it in Bombay? A notably logical aspect also is....why can't Kalai apply elsewhere? Mr Bharadwaj Rangan is highly appreciative of confusing scenes with a bit of predictability. By partially joining all of these, as highlighted by the tone of his conversation in the interview(expressing appreciation, directly pointing out scenes that are not working) Mr Bharadwaj is "pandering" the director to answer his perceptions. Now, the question is, How much of Mr Bharadwaj's perception of the film is genuine? And, what is the director's vision in answering perception related questions of the film, if he says most of it is through the eyes of Kalai and little less of the audience(as indicated in the scene where Surabhi first joins in...quite abrupt intro and not having a connected start....but it is to be looked in Kalai's eyes as something is happening to "him" and not for "us" as viewers directly). It looks like Elan wanted to stretch the bounds of the film in many directions- Commercial, Main character, emotions, scene executions....but ultimately the film has turned out to be like a rubber band that is tightly taut. For some viewers, the rubber band slips(overwhelming amount of perception) thereby the rubber band snaps back and hurts them, for some the rubber band tears apart leaving many confused and frustrated, and for some like baddy he is still exploring the threshold point... Phew, I myself am exhausted reading my own perception! XD
While Vetrimaran Was Seeing Kavin's audition video it was a scene between father and a daughter talking about the remembrance of his wife. Elan Already Gave a clue there that the scene was from the movie he acted.

The "award" moment really tops the rest, having showcased the real pain of any passionate person.

That hospital sequence was not real but is the scene from a movie that Vetri Maaran directs kalai. That's why u can hear "cut, nalla panninga kalai" From vetri Maaran's voice. That kalai becomes actor, so at last there's a flex of him in beach(with other actors, shows he became an actor)
Aaditi pohaankar star ah illayaa ilan? Or will you judge her morally for the previous roles she did to justify whether she is nallavalaa illayaa nu? And motta rangan has no sense at all, generalising whole west as individualistic and the whole East as collectivist..what a moran really🤦 If you're going to deny individualism is not part of our ethos, deny liberalism (which is intrinsic to freedom) also rangan. Why to just wait at individualism and what's stopping you to say that freedom is not eastern culture? 😂😅 you can't. And it goes same with individualism as well. Avoid venturing into these areas where you've little sense about. Stick to masala movies.

Two things.. 1. Film was not a complete trash there were some good scenes in the movie and it is commendable. 2. Remember, Baddy was okay with Bigil, which even as a thalapathy fan I couldn't bare. At the end it not baddy or majority decides. It's only we like it or not .In this case, Baddy liked the movie and he is appreciating it.
Why everbody is doubting BR, continuosuly chetans are giving block buster, BR ku valikum illa, so may be he is praising this guy, for that matter even PS1 was appreciated like kakaikum than kunju pon kunju, anyway premalu was just feel good movie you guys celebrated it way too much😂😂😂
I have an explanation for why the climax was a single shot.....since the director of that movie is vetrimaaran and he is famously known for his single shots😀
What a overhype for an Instagram mashup movie… baddie i know there will be difference in opinion, but fundamentally this movie felt very flat and bad and kind of all over the place. Talking about selfishness, people couldn’t root for Kavin because the story didn’t offer anything to root for him not because people don’t have dreams or unhappy and learn to be satisfied. Stop trying to sell your mediocre product with people’s mindset and people’s choices
I just want to delete the word 'lag' from english...

Baddy tells it's an exceptional film
Opinions are subjective. Maybe it worked for him. Can't complain.
I have not seen the film, but these don't know to write a coherent story... We don't have a breed called screenwriters here like in malayalam.

First time (probably), I could not empathise with Baddy's take on a movie.
The character development lacked depth, like the crucial core of why Kavin aspired to be an actor, his conviction, his love life and the dramatic turnaround.
Take a scene where Kavin delivers a thumping speech on feminism, just after dancing on stage (dressed as a girl) in a vulgar fashion. The reason? Well, it becomes the base for almost the whole second half.
Such a lack of depth in character development disappointed me indeed. However, STAR has its moments for sure. Lal sir's character, the funeral scene, and the lover's conversation in front of a father are all moments that were natural and went well with the flow. The "award" moment really tops the rest, having showcased the real pain of any passionate person.
Why That type of dance because of that teacher
.
He used his art to protest ( lal sir scene include for that)
@@junaidnadapuram That is no excuse for the vulgarity. And the feminism that suddenly arose on that occasion seemed out of the blue.

@@kabilesh3381 I can't watch 2 hrs 20mins film for just a climax brother
@@nithishkumarbtechit1927 haha!! in my pov.. it wasn't that much worse bro..the whole writing was to justify the climax..i loved this tbh..

Baddy very good acting😅
I have an explanation for why the climax was a single shot.....since the director of that movie is vetrimaaran and he is famously known for his single shots😀
For me trailer is 5 star compared to movie...
Motta Rasavathi review poduya...
