After putting battery in and pressing volume up, power and home button, it takes me to a software update screen and then says no command. I need to put battery off to go out that screen but it doesn't open TWRP.
Edit: Now it's stuck in the samsung j5 2016 logo and restarting all the time, dead phone i guess.
Yes you are right , your phone is goes into bootloop.
This is because that twrp file is not for J5 model. J5 itself have many models.
Now , you have to reset your phone or flash software with the help of odin.
it says "Pass" in odin3 but when i try to boot into TWRP recovery, it brings me to something else (stock recovery i guess).
how m i supposed to fix this?

nah i got what i did wrong
but its partly his fault
he should have told usu that Odin version is important to note before flashing
when i tried flashing the image with different Odin version
it worked just fine.

How do i get twrp recovery on phone?? i installed file and all but to install twrp flash i need to root...

possibly your pc didn't find the drivers to need to find it and install it manually.
After installing twrp recovery it showed me pass but as soon as i push volume up+power+home button it showed custom binary and went blank. It showing nothing and not even getting started 😞.

My recovery is not flasing, i have downloaded the correct recovery for my sm 500f, when i click on start the odin is stuck on recovery.img what should i do?
Try to flash lower version of recovery.
