    Hi Charlotte! Found your channel some days ago, and I can tell you, you're doing tremendous work for young researchers! As a final year PhD candidate myself, I would like to add on to your roommate point: FIND A MENTOR!!
    I cannot emphasize on this enough! When I say mentor, I don't mean just your supervisor.. I mean someone who is atleast one stage ahead of your research. Someone who you can trust enough to talk about your research, and other things that you can't talk to with just everyone.
    Trust me, you're gonna need someone like that. Someone who is a tad ahead of you, has seen the pitfalls (as well as loopholes) of your research, or research in general.
    Once again, great work Charlotte! Godspeed!

    You can write as long as you want, no matter whatever you want to write about. All what you have to do is to add more evidences and analyse them to support the points you want to make, which will make your writing as long as you want. It is a malpractice to choose only famous or welknown writers as your references because there are many wellknown writers who have become popular by well advertising themselves, but not really because the contents of their books are truly valuable.
    Before you start writing about something,:
    1) You list the points you want to make,
    2)Skim through others' writing about the same thing to see whether they have made any different good points which you agree on to mention to make your writing more diverse , but not merely your personal narrow points of view or subjective interpretations.
    3) Look for evidences which support the points you are going to make. The evidences should be both recognised and as close to everyday life as possible, but not merely well-known among professional writers. It depends on whether the points you want to make are about natural science or social science what properties or characteristcs and qualities of evidences you should select . It is far much easier to write about topics in social science because you are allowed to interpret the same world in whatever ways you want, providing that you can produce enough evidences for your subjective beliefs or assumptions- which do not necessarily have to be true

    Intersting. For most of us Math and CS (theoretical) people, we (professors/students) prefer latex over words whether you are in an undergrad or grad program.
    Typing up equations in a words document seems painful...ngl.

    Thanks for the video! Do you have any strategies for reading the literature and writing a review?

    • @zimmejoc
      @zimmejoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      always be reading. When you read a paper, and if you are a pen & paper kind of person, write what the paper was about and its main findings and why it is important on a 3x5 index card. If you are an electronic person, do the same in the note taking app of your choice--DO NOT copy and paste. Limit your notes to what could reasonably be crammed onto a 3x5 index card. When I use an article search database (I typically use PsychLit--which is what it was called when I first started using it in the early 90's) I'll read a paper it cites, and I'll mine that paper's reference section for other interesting sounding papers and I'll read those, but I do not mine the mined paper's reference section. The big thing is always be reading and try to focus your reading on your field's top 10 journals. You'll find lots of other papers in lower tiered journals, but be a research snob and fight the urge to read those papers if you can avoid it. Many editors will desk reject your paper if your reference section is full of lower tiered journals so make sure your absolutely positively need to read papers in those "C" tiered journals. Once you have loads of cards or notes and if you have your methods and results mostly written, then you are ready to write those intro and discussion sections.
      I usually write my discussion and intro sections simultaneously.

      @zimmejoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikhaeldito you'll be surprised how quickly you can fill up a 3x5 card, so you really have to cut out the filler material and focus on exactly what the main points of the paper are.

    Hi Charlotte, I love your content. I was wondering if you can give me advice or recommendations cause I in my 2nd year of B.A on Psych and I want to focus in Neuroscience research and Epistemology, but here in Argentina we have most of the content focused in the Psychoanalytic theory, so i'm more a self-taught curious person. I been reading Ernst Mach and Henri Poincare philosophy of science but I want to fulfill the neuroscience part too. Thanks, and keep uploading this wonderful content.
