Get a List of File Names from Folders & Sub-folders in Excel (using Power Query)

- You can use Power Query to get a list of file names in Excel from folders and subfolders.
If you're using Excel 2016, you already have Power Query options in the Data tab (under the Get & Transform group).
If you're using Excel 2010 or 2013, you will need to download, install and activate Power Query.
Note that Power Query and Get & Transform refer to the same thing.
For Excel 2010/2013, you need to install the Power Query add-in to use it (steps described below).
-- Click here to download the Power Query add-in. Make sure you are downloading 32-bit if your Excel is 32-bit and 64 bit if your Excel is 64 bit.
-- Install the Power Query add-in.
-- Open Excel. If you see a Power Query tab, skip the remaining steps. If not, move to the next step.
-- Go to File and click on Options.
-- In the ‘Excel Options’ dialog box, click on Add-in in the left pane.
-- From the Manage drop-down, select COM Add-ins, and click on Go.
-- In the list of available add-ins, select Power Query and click OK.
-- Close the Excel Application and restart Excel.
The above steps would install and activate the Power Query for your Excel.
In this video, I will show you the exact steps to get the list of file names from folders and subfolders.
I will also show you how to edit the data in Power Query Editor to add more meta columns to the file name data.

It is important to note that for different versions of Excel, the naming of the group in the ribbon and the name of the commands is different, but the placement and icons are the same. For Microsoft Office 365 Excel Version 1902 (Build 11328.20492) - up to date in 2020 - the steps are the following: Main Menu >> Data >> Get Data (button on the left of the Get & Transform Data group in the ribbon) >> From File >> From Folder >> Folder Dialog Box >> Browse >> OK >> New Dialog >> Transform Data button (bottom, third from left) >> (Delete and add [Attributes] columns as needed) >> Close & Load

Also, I was looking for an excel macro where If we have multiple images like 1000 images in a folder and if I want to search an image, then it will scan the folders and sub-folders and show the path of the relevant nearest match along with the photo.

Too many subfolders resulting in a 260 char limit error. Any way to get around it without admin privilege's (work machine)

Hey, I need some help ASAP..it did copy the list I had made in a folder... except I had numbered my list myself in the folder... so when I did your steps it copied to the same cell both number (but with series by 10 or something, so instead of 1,2,3...it came out 1,10,100,..) and in the same cell the artist name and track name...I know how to format the column to number it correctly, but I don't need it to number it next to the name especially incorrectly.. I need this list for tomorrow, Thursday the 30th... help please.. I have Excel 2019 thanks

This will not work for any folder that has more than 100 video items in it. It will take very long to list out all the files and subfolders. The query will hang/freeze and fail when downloading before listing them out.
I was trying to list out all files and folders in my 256GB micro SD card with this method and the query ran for 40 mins plus and still ongoing. I had to cancel it as it uses 4gb of ram constantly as well.
Nonetheless, thanks for sharing this method though it doesn't fix my cause. Appreciated.
