I remember this. I was led to believe that it was really difficult to delete that was the main concern.
Being a U2 fan, I thought it was cool! I'm still waiting for Songs for Ascent to be released in my lifetime.

Hard to believe it has been a decade! I remember the controversy well! My sister was not happy, but I was, being a fan. I mean I was going to buy the physical copy anyway, but I realized it annoyed a lot of people!

Everyone was angry because you couldn't delete, not that they gave it away for free.

Very good video with a good overview of all parties involved. I remember that day very well, I went of the U2 bandwagon with Zooropa and Pop, suddenly there was that album… I’ve listened that day 3 times to the album, I decided that it was subpar (for me) and I wanted to delete it… Now you have to know that I had the Ipod with the biggest size harddrive, and that was not sufficient for all my music. Deleting was not an option (at that time), so I was really upset… I remember thinking what if this was a new strategy to push new music… what about my music??? Fortunately, as you explained, a swift solution was provided. But the fact that you had no choice to downoad the album or not, left a real bad taste in my mouth.
However, I still use Apple products (no auto download anymore 😂), and U2 is still played at my house (from the first album till Achting baby, Zooropa and Pop have disappeared in the waste basket). I still give each U2 release a listen, but no thank you.
In short, a good idea but badly executed.

Never understood the whole hatred and poison. You could simply ignore it. Personally felt very happy finding their new album in my phone! The album itself is amongst their best, very very strong songwriting and very focused. Grat video, greetings from Athens, Greece.

The great thing (for me) about an iPod (and now the phone) is being able to rip all your entire music collection to the device and be able to have my entire music collection with me in the car and anywhere else.

Not being a U2 fan, I was unhappy to see Songs Of Innocence in my iTunes library. In all truth I thought the cover was very creepy looking as it came after the Michael Jackson trial. I deleted the songs from my library and hid them in my iTunes account. I chalked everything up to Bono's ego and thought the backlash was unnecessary. I could tolerate U2 until Achtung Baby came out. After that, I was happy to get off of the U2 train and immerse in music that spoke to me. In a similar way, I purged any John Mellencamp from my collection when Big Daddy came out. I was turned off by the title and just walked on without it. I parted way with Phil Collins w-when Su-sudio came out. I felt the song represented a serious lack of s-song w-writing and treated the listener poorly.

The album cover you’re remembering did not appear on the original iTunes release. The original cover was a picture of a white record sleeve with the name of the album written on it. Only physical copies had the other cover although eventually they did replace the cover on the digital release as well.

    • @TJRtheOriginal
      @TJRtheOriginal  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

@Vince_Tasciotti I remember not knowing what to make of the cover to Songs Of Innocence also, and kinda’ feeling the same way about it as you.....Then I found out that the young boy on the cover that Larry Mullen Jr was posing with was his son, and that the image was supposed to represent the parental instinct to want to protect the innocence of your child.....I get it now. But at first it bothered me too. I think it depends on where you are coming from culturally...and I think that you and I were both coming from the same place culturally.....I think that if I could have been in the same room, I might have cautioned that this cover photo could be mis interpreted as creepy....I am sure that U2 would have not listened to me though LOL.
Su-sudio is on my list of most annoying songs ever,

@bendowson3124: You are correct. Sometimes it’
s easy to blur these things after 10 years. The physical cover art is definitely a lot stronger, even thought I didn’t get it at first.

As a fan, I was equally happy to receive an unexpected album from U2 after such little content from them over the previous five years.
One of the other reasons for the backlash I feel was the way many percieved U2 to be hubristic and arrogant - assuming everyone would want the album, regardless of whether they were fans or not. That, and people just love to hate.

I don't know...at the time, bitching about a free U2 album seemed like young people trying to act cool. But then again, trying too hard to remain relevant is not a good look either. The Apple "giveaway" felt kinda desperate. U2 enjoyed strong sales for so long I think they got too caught up in trying to keep it going.
The album itself? It's one of my favorites of theirs actually. 'California, Iris, Sleep Like a Baby Tonight', lotta good tunes on there. I'm just not a fan of 'The Miracle'. Weak single. Although not as bad as 'Get On Your Boots'.
