From Kim's perspective Jimmy was a much better person at the time before they started dating. She knew him for years as her boss' goofy little brother working in the mail room doing games with office staff. She probably hoped he would stabilize without her but it was clearly too late with how corrupted he'd already become.

Gus' scene at the wine bar really drove it home for me what Better Call Saul is about. Its about people falling into toxic cycles and failing to break out of them. Chuck can't escape his feelings of inadequacy for his brother and doubles down on his deceptive conduct, Mike's past as a criminal got his son killed and every attempt he makes to atone for it just drives him further into crime until he's the righthand man of a drug lord. Kim desperately wants to feel that she is in control of things but this results in her feeling that everything is her fault and this just destroys her emotionally. Gus could live his life and find love again if he tried...but he can't bare to abandon the mission and thus loses any chance of having a life.

She finally did the right thing in getting away from the “Jimmy life,” but what did it finally take for her to do that? It took seeing Howard getting his brains blown out right in front of her, and then lying right to his widow’s face during his wake, dishonoring his memory by painting him as a cocaine addict. She had many “off ramps” she could have taken from her nefarious existence with Jimmy throughout the series, but didn’t take any of them until now. Jimmy/Saul is worse, but she’s really not such a good person after all.

  • @schmuck.on.wheels
    @schmuck.on.wheels 2 ปีที่แล้ว +329

Kim leaving Jimmy is obviously a possibility we've all considered, but I'm so glad that it wasn't just "Jimmy you're a bad influence on me", because that would've been disappointingly lacking in nuance, plus Kim has often fought against the idea that Jimmy is "ruining" her, because it essentially robs her of agency. At the end of the day, they just became a toxic and dangerous duo, and I'm glad the breakup was about acknowledging that and Kim's horrible feelings about herself, and not about pointing fingers.
Of course, it's fucking heartbreaking either way. Even moreso this way, because like the audience, neither character WANTS to break up, it's just the right thing to do (which the audience also knows).
I also think there's an interesting relationship between Gus's wine scene and Mike's scene with Nacho's dad. Nacho's dad mentions that revenge is not justice, and it never ends (and of course, this directly contradicts how Mike dealt with his own son's death). Then there's the shot from the side showing them on either side of the fence, and Mike is surrounded by fencing, as if in a cage. To me, this parallels Gus's scene because that's also essentially a scene about revenge; it's Gus choosing it over a normal life. So in a way, I think this episode shows both Gus and Mike being trapped in this emotional cage, robbing themselves of a normal, potentially happy life by choosing revenge. Truly a tragedy for all our characters.

    • @murphsmurf87
      @murphsmurf87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

yeah I've always hated the Kim leaving Jimmy prediction because it was always framed like "Kim realizes how toxic Jimmy really is" or "Kim realizes Chuck was right all along" or "Kim decides she is too moral and good to stick with unethical slippin Jimmy". Which makes zero sense for Kim's character, and she would never think those things. So I'm really glad the writers did it this way. She didn't blame him, she didn't take some moral high ground. She recognized there was a problem and immediately took action to fix it. The only way to guarantee she stops hurting people is by leaving the law and separating from Jimmy.

That raw time jump felt like a bullet that finally killed Jimmy McGill, and it was chilling.
I was always kind of afraid of how they would justify Saul's behaviour towards women in Breaking Bad, saying things like "You're killing me with that booty" to Francesca. Such attitudes wouldn't have made sense to me provided that Kim would still be around or even alive. But now it makes complete sense, because Jimmy will never allow himself to love another person again. It's also sad how he so desperately needs to stay in his character, in his "Heisenberg", all the time to cope with everything. He talks all the time since he wakes up, he talks to clients, he even talks to himself, shuts out the noise of his thoughts like Jesse did with the constant partying, and he only shuts up to listen to his own announcement on the radio. I had to immediately watch the last 15-20 minutes again and cry another river because it was all so masterfully done.

Feels like when Jimmy said to Kim, "One day we will wake... go on our day...and forget about it".
In a way he applied this method in his life after Kim left him. And the we cut to Saul waking up and probably he forgot about it or don't want that part of his life come out anymore or doesn't want to remember it at all. Because it's full of tragedy! Felt like this whole episode was a full circle in some sense!
But in current timeline, Gene doesn't have anyone around him neither he is occupied in other things like Saul did. And now maybe he is remembering all that, probably remembering Kim and everything he lost, that's why he is always sad.
I hope there is some kind of redemption to Gene because Better Call Saul is tragic story of Jimmy McGill!

    - I cried seeing you sob. I don't know you, but you've made me care. You're both phenomenal reactors.
    - BrBa is perfect; BCS is more than perfect.
    - I agree that this was a fitting ending, which means we're in for a treat in the four remaining episodes. Can't wait!
    - Shout out to magnificent actor Juan Carlos Cantu (Nacho's dad). The characters he played on Lost, Saul and Dexter were all so different but he sold each portrayal so well. A true pro.
    - Likely a wrap on Don Eladio, Don Juan, Don Héctor and the Twins. Standing ovation to the writing and the cast for those marvellous characters we loved to hate.
    - Also a wrap on director Michael Morris (probably the best to have worked on BCS, and that's saying a lot) and writer Ann Cherkis (she penned so many world-class episodes including Hank's, Gómez's, Lydia's and Héctor's re-introductions).
    - Outstanding editing. Those match cuts in the opening montage rank amongst my all-time favourite ones.
    - The moment they split up... can we just give Rhea all the Emmys ever?

    I think I get it
Kim said what she did to Howard's wife to protect Jimmy
He was under fire by her and the blame was being planted on Jimmy despite his attempts to dodge around her
Kim then steps in and says what she says
Then later, when they're in the parking lot, she says nothing to him
No justification or reasoning or anything, just a kiss
"I did that because I love you"
Which furthers the message that their love harms everyone around them
Also the scene about Gus chatting up the guy, I think it was to show that Gus still has his past self inside him
    Kindness, appreciation and love
    The ability, to love
He's very interested and into this man he speaks to, but then he has his memories of Max, his current life and who he has become rise to the surface
Even if he could forget the love he had for Max, he can never forget what happend to him

He forgot his own words to Nacho about looking over your shoulder in this business.
He was used to adulation from everyone, gifts, women, power. He grew soft with age and started trusting Gus because Gus's money enabled his luxurious life. I knew Mike would talk to Nacho's dad, so the dad can have closure. In a previous season, when listening to one of the member's testimony at the support group he goes to with his daughter-in-law, he realized that not hearing from a loved one ever again, never knowing what happened to them, HURTS ALOT. Which is why he dug up the body of the man Hector killed in the desert and gave cops the location of it, cuz that man might have people in his life who misses him dearly and deserves to know what happen.
What Kim said about what Jimmy would do is true, at the end of last season Jimmy was hinting towards a break-up because he realized, in a conversation with Mike in the desert, that by telling her everything...... now ..... "she's in the game", in danger.

Some specific scenes I remember a hint of Jimmy McGill (aka still having some shred of decency left) were the expressions of guilt on Jimmy's face & going with "doing the right thing" even if it went against the cartel. One was when Jimmy uses Francesca to call Hank to fake her car accident. Another was giving Mike/Gus the wrong address to help hide Jesse at the Laser tag place. When he figures out the poison cigarette scheme he & Huell were apart of, included getting Brock ill & he tries to quit as Walt's lawyer was another moment. Another was when Saul reluctantly agreed to tip off the DEA that Gus has a hit out on Hank. The episode where Saul drops off a check for Andrea & she asks him about Jesse there's a pause there before he lies to her. Then moments later when he goes into the car where Jesse is sitting waiting. He attempts to suggest for Jesse just to see her when Jesse asks how she & Brock was. Lastly the episode where Walt & Saul were in the "vacuum guy's" safe house. Saul tries to convince Walt to stay & face the feds to save Skyler from taking the fall. Especially since he's going to die of cancer anyway. Maybe you don't agree but I think Saul in Breaking bad wasn't totally void of humanity. Jimmy lives. lol ;) imo.

Two thoughts read on reddit about Kim and Jimmy that do make sense, these people are really tragic figures.
    Kim:
Kim is the kind of person who solves all her problems by just leaving. I don't mean it just because of leaving Jimmy. She worked with Howard and Chuck then she leaves HHM. She cuts all her relationships there. And her problems with her bosses there were her and Jimmy´s doing. Then she works for Mesa Verde for some time. Then she has problems with Kevin. Which was her and Jimmy´s fault by the way. So she decided to leave Mesa Verde and her law firm. In the end, there is a problem (okay truly a big ONE) with Jimmy and Howard. This was again partly her own doing ( and Jimmy´s too, but mostly hers). So she quits her job and cuts Jimmy and everyone out of her life ( her clients). She honestly reminds me the Jenny from Forest Gump. She mentioned one time that she had a cousin ( so possible uncles or aunts)but we never saw her family. She is probably no contact with them.
    Jimmy:
When Kim breaks up with Jimmy, she reasons that they are bad for each other, that their relationship is poison. The two of them being together continuously hurts not only the two of them, but everyone around them.
With those parting words in his head, Jimmy leans as hard into becoming Saul Goodman as he possibly can over the next few years. He needs to avoid the introspection that'll lead him to agreeing with Kim that their relationship was toxic, so he deliberately becomes something worse than he ever was when he was with Kim. It's as if he's trying to say "You think we were bad together? Wait 'til you see the mess I've become without you!"

What an episode for the best damn show on tv. Emotional damage. The way Saul just suppresses Jimmy bc of the pain associated with being him just breaks my heart. BB rewatches will be even sadder now. I can’t wait to see what happens next and I’m somehow dreading it at the same time. There will never be another show like BB/BCS, I’m going to miss it dearly.
I’ve been looking forward to you all’s reaction. A very pleasant surprise to get it early and unpleasant surprise that you won’t be able to watch the next couple eps live. “The Lord giveth and the lord taketh away” lol another great reaction as always.

Now THIS is a reaction video. Two people completely engrossed in what they're watching, and emotionally reacting in real time. As opposed to most reaction videos, which is people sitting and talking over the thing they're supposedly watching., and not saying anything actually insightful, but merely listing what we can already see on the screen. This video is people **reacting**.

Remember. Mike told Jimmy and Kim that they had to stick to the story they made up about Howard doing drugs if everything was going to be ok for them in their future. “ You keep telling the lie you’ve been telling.”You don’t want any more drug king pins or cartel coming after you. So Kim telling Howard’s wife that she saw him snorting drugs and it being so cruel was something she had to do. She was protecting Jimmy foremost as was reflected later on when she confessed that she knew Lalo was alive. She didn’t want Jimmy to worry about her. And that gaslighting manipulative tactic she used on Howard’s wife was maybe the last straw for her. Really sad albeit brilliant episode yo.

the ending is just a nightmare we can't wake up from. It's EVERYTHING we THOUGHT we wanted at the beginning of this show: We can't wait for Jimmy to become Saul and do the hilarious quips and jokes and hijinks we saw on the side in BrBa. But now that it's HERE, we are horrified. It's the WORST thing we have ever seen.

Such genius writing. In BB, Saul was this colourful, wacky, (mostly) light-hearted almost caricature of a sleazy lawyer, and was always entertaining. We looked forward to every scene with him in it.
This taints everything - he is utterly hollow and dead inside, painting this ridiculous facade over everything to try and forget.

Personally I think Better Call Saul develops better all their characters, while BB only did with Walt and Jesse. However I think BB's story is more compelling for the higher stakes and all the action. If you are a character driven guy, you'd like better BCS. If you are story driven story, you'd like BB better. Anyways both shows are the best written shows of all time. Thank you guys for beautiful reactions. You are also the best reactors to BB and BCS. No discussion. Big hug to both of you.

BCS has the benefit of working backwards & dissecting both peripheral characters & main characters of BB because it came after the main show. I wish this show maintained the direction of it's new characters instead of relying too much on the characters of BB. Don't get me wrong, I think this show did a masterful job of tying up, connecting this show to BB & really giving depth to Saul, Mike, Gus, Hector. But I just wish it created a bigger world in this universe like it did in the first 3 seasons. More characters like Chuck, Kim, Howard, Nacho, Lalo.

The time jump was perfect. Kim leaving Jimmy was all that was needed to wrap up, how did Jimmy become Saul Goodman.
And the writers knew, we didn't need any more explanation. We already knew Jimmy becomes Saul, and Kim leaving him, that's it. No explanation beside that was needed, or given.
It's perfect storytelling in its simplicity.
